Fraud, financial distress and liquidation, audit failures, hubris and narcissism, are all genuine and serious issues in today’s business environment. Challenges exist for organisations in many different guises as they strive to achieve their goals. This often results in a balancing act between the right course of action and action which could be seen to be ethically immoral or even illegal. Recently many organisations have encountered financial distress for different reasons, at a high cost to employees, pensioners, and other stakeholders. How can organisations ensure that legal and ethical decisions and actions are taken? Through a review of literature, recent case studies, and the incidence of relevant courses in universities, this paper examines the importance of education in the fight against corporate fraud. Evidence indicates that employees can be effective corporate watchdogs in the fight against financial deception and unethical decisions; increasing the number of people in a firm with enhanced fraud awareness and knowledge through education should, therefore, be one of the essential requirements for our future business managers and leaders. We indicate why anti-fraud education is important in the fight against financial shenanigans, and why it should be more widely adopted for the benefit of all stakeholders.

In everyday oncology practice, practitioners make a wide range of ethical decisions. Many of these decisions will seem straightforward, with those involved agreeing on the right course of action. Other decisions will be difficult, with conflicting perspectives regarding the wishes, needs and best interests of patients. This article suggests an ethical framework to facilitate the decision-making of practitioners in relation to challenging practice situations. We provide an anonymised ‘ethics case’ to examine one difficult decision made by a hospice team. The four-quadrant approach can be used to facilitate reflection and collaborative decision-making.

Traditional (bio) ethics relies to a large degree on the analysis of problems to determine the right course of action. In particular, in medicine, a dominant text declares that there is a “Common Morality” that applies to all people. This paper will argue that ethics is culture bound and that, in a pluralistic society, a common morality approach to the resolution of problems has significant limitations. I will argue that more attention needs to be paid to the process of agreeing to a way forward given that there is disagreement. I will illustrate how this applies not only at the clinical level but also at the level of national and international politics. A theoretical understanding of compromise and a look at ways of describing the way people make ethical decisions as opposed to seeking an ideal ethical code is presented as a way in which we can manage problems better in a pluralistic society.

The paper describes the development of the 1998 revision of the Psychological Society of Ireland's Code of Professional Ethics. The Code incorporates the European Meta-Code of Ethics and an ethical decision-making procedure borrowed from the Canadian Psychological Association. An example using the procedure is presented. To aid decision making, a classification of different kinds of stakeholder (i.e., interested party) affected by ethical decisions is offered. The author contends (1) that psychologists should assert the right, which is an important aspect of professional autonomy, to make discretionary judgments, (2) that to be justified in doing so they need to educate themselves in sound and deliberative judgment, and (3) that the process is facilitated by a code such as the Irish one, which emphasizes ethical awareness and decision making. The need for awareness and judgment is underlined by the variability in the ethical codes of different organizations and different European states: in such a context, codes should be used as broad yardsticks, rather than precise templates.

Abstract Failures induced in the silicon substrate by process marginalities or process mistakes need continuous attention in new as well as established technologies. Several case studies showing implant related defects and dislocations in silicon will be discussed. Depending on the electrical characteristics of the failure the localization method has to be chosen. The emphasis of the discussion will be on the importance of the right choice for further physical de-processing to reveal the defect. This paper focuses on the localization method, the de- processing technique and the use of Wright etch for subsequent TEM preparation.

When asked whether to sacrifice oneself or another person to save others, one might think that people would consider sacrificing themselves rather than someone else as the right and appropriate course of action—thus showing an other-serving bias. So far however, most studies found instances of a self-serving bias—people say they would rather sacrifice others. In three experiments using trolley-like dilemmas, we tested whether an other-serving bias might appear as a function of judgment type. That is, participants were asked to make a prescriptive judgment (whether the described action should or should not be done) or a normative judgment (whether the action is right or wrong). We found that participants exhibited an other-serving bias only when asked whether self- or other-sacrifice is wrong. That is, when the judgment was normative and in a negative frame (in contrast to the positive frame asking whether the sacrifice is right). Otherwise, participants tended to exhibit a self-serving bias; that is, they approved sacrificing others more. The results underscore the importance of question wording and suggest that some effects on moral judgment might depend on the type of judgment.

In the last decades, business competition has been increasingly among supply chains (SCs) rather than individual firms. Today, considering the challenges of environmental, social, and economic sustainability, it is becoming even more vital to coordinate and co-manage company resources, activities, and innovative efforts at the SC level. Consequently, knowledge, which is a critical resource for companies, needs to be managed properly not only in single firms but also across SCs. For the education of business managers, this implies a double challenge: first, to make students and future executives become aware of the knowledge management (KM) practices that can be adopted; second, to facilitate the assimilation of these practices for the effective management of SCs, to ensure higher economic and environmentally sustainable performances. Standard definitions and classifications can be of great help, but the current studies are very fragmented. This study contributes by exploring the literature and examining the KM practices that are proposed and defined by the different authors. A systematic review and a descriptive analysis of selected papers showed the trend and focus of papers in the KM and SC fields. In addition, based on the definitions and classifications drawn from the literature, this paper discusses a possible systematization of the key KM practices in SCs. The major contribution of this paper is the effort of re-definition and re-classification of KM practices and their potential importance for effective and sustainable SC management. This analysis can be especially useful for organizing KM courses targeted to current and future business managers.

Context: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to a turbulent business environment, resulting in market uncertainties, frustrations, and rumors. Wrongly held beliefs—or myths—can hinder startups from turning new market opportunities into their favor (for example, by failing at diversification decisions) or undertaking wrong business decisions, e.g., diversifying in industries that have products of no real market value). Objectives: The objective of the paper is to identify the beliefs that drive the business decisions of startups in a pandemic and to isolate those beliefs that are merely myths. Further, this paper proposes strategic guidelines in the form of a framework to help startups make sound decisions that can lead to market success. Method: The two-step research method involved multiple case studies with five startups based in India, France, Italy, and Switzerland, to identify perceptual beliefs that drove strategic business decisions, followed by a case study of 36 COVID-19-solution focused startups, funded by the European Union (EU). The findings were validated through a survey that involved 102 entrepreneurs. The comparative analysis of two multiple case studies helped identify beliefs that were merely “myths”; myths that drove irrational strategic decisions, resulting in business failures. Results: The results indicate that startups make decisions in pandemic situations that are driven by seven myths, pertaining to human, intellectual, and financial resources. The decision on whether to diversify or continue in the same business operation can be divided into four strategic options of the Competency-Industry Relatedness (C-IR) framework: ignore, delay, phase-in, and diversify. Diversification in the same (or different industry) is less risky for startups if they have the skills, as needed, to diversify in related industries. Diversification in related industries helps startups leverage their experiences and learning curves (those associated with existing product lines) to adapt their existing products in new markets, or utilize their technologies to solve new problems via new products. The desired outcome for these startups should be sustainable business growth—to meet sustainability goals by contributing to the society and the economy. Conclusion: The C-IR framework is a strategic guide for startups to make business decisions based on internal factors, rather than myths. Accurately assessing skill diversity and the nature of new industries (or markets) will help startups leverage their existing resources optimally, without the need for (pricey) external funding. This will foster sustained business growth resulting in a nation economic development. Knowledge transfer from the Innovation ecosystem will further strengthen the C-IR framework effectiveness.

IntroductionWith approximately 200 procedures performed in the last year at our centre, worthwhile clinical lessons continue to emerge in the practice of endovascular clot retrieval (ECR) for acute stroke. This case demonstrates the value of considered clinical appraisal in a dynamic, information-rich setting. A 68 year-old man with established vertebrobasilar atherosclerotic disease developed capricious, blood pressure-sensitive neurological deficits after successful ECR for a basilar artery stroke, inviting the possibility of further intervention in the form of intracranial stenting. We avoided pursuing this course of action in favour of a more measured approach, entailing the provision of vasopressor support over the following week.MethodFollowing ECR, our patient was admitted to the intensive care unit for continuous blood pressure monitoring and close observation of his neurological deficits with serial NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) scoring. Systolic blood pressures were maintained between 140–160 mmHg using vasopressor support, with the aim of allowing time for recovery of vascular autoregulation and collateralization.ResultsOver six days, the patient developed moderate left upper and lower limb weakness. An MRI performed on Day 5 revealed limited interval infarction of the right hemipons and cerebellum, with complete re-occlusion of the mid-basilar arterial segment. He left the ICU with a NIHSS score of 7, and was living independently at 90-day follow-up (Modified Rankin Score 1).ConclusionThe ultimately favourable net outcome for our patient clearly illustrates the imperative to remain within the boundaries of evidence-based practice in this bold and rapidly evolving discipline.
