BACKGROUND/AIM: Propranolol is a beta-adrenergic receptor blocker which is used for the treatment of portal hypertension in patients with liver cirrhosis. The systemic exposure of propranolol may vary according to the extent of portal hypertension and liver function. The objective of this study was to propose a model for predicting the exposure of propranolol. METHODS: Thirty normal subjects, 18 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), and 54 patients with cirrhosis were included in this study. Blood samples for pharmacokinetic analysis were taken up to 8 hours post-dose. Pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using a non-compartmental model. The extent of portal hypertension was evaluated by heart-to-liver radioactivity uptake ratio (H/L ratio) using 201TI per rectal scintigraphy. A multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the best model for estimating the Cmax or AUC of propranolol. RESULTS: Twenty-four normal subjects, 18 CAH patients, and 36 cirrhosis patients completed the study. A multivariate stepwise linear regression analysis revealed that sex, weight, total bilirubin concentrations, platelet counts, and H/L ratio affected the exposure of propranolol: Cmax (ng/mL) = 50.976-18.743×sex[M:1;F:0]-0.408×weight+6.155×total bilirubin+35.328×H/L ratio (adjusted r2=0.440); AUClast (ng·h/mL) = 298.86–71.080×sex[M:1;F:0]–2.158×weight–0.312×platelet count+26.372×total bilirubin+176.745×H/L ratio (adjusted r2=0.500). CONCLUSION: A multivariate model based on laboratory tests, H/L ratio, body weight, and sex can predict the systemic exposure of propranolol and thereby inform the prescription of propranolol in patients with liver disease.

Fifty-two patients were studied with various diseases affecting liver parenchyma. Any disorders of bile transport were excluded on the basis of dynamic liver scintigraphy using intravenously injected N/2,4-dimethyl acetanilid/iminodiacetate 99mTc complex (HEPIDA). The activity concentration of 99mTc-HEPIDA in plasma was measured from 5 through 60 min post injection. Clearance of the substance (C1B) was calculated from blood plasma disappearance curves and compared with results of 13 laboratory tests used conventionally for assessment of damage of the liver and its functional capacity; age and body weight was also included in the analysis. Statistical relations were studied using linear regression analysis of two variables, multiple regression analysis as well as multidimensional analysis of variance. It was demonstrated that 99mTc-HEPIDA clearance is a simple, accurate and repeatable measure of liver parenchyma damage. In males, values of C1B above 245 ml. min−1/1.73 m2 exclude hepatic damage with high probability; values below 195 ml.min∼Vl.73 m2 indicate evident impairment of liver parenchyma function.

The duration of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) is a critical factor that determines the duration of treatment. This study aimed to evaluate factors affecting the PTBD duration in patients who underwent percutaneous treatment of common bile duct (CBD) stones. This study analyzed data of 169 patients who underwent percutaneous treatment of CBD stones from June 2009 to June 2019. Demographic data, characteristics of stone, procedure-related factors, and laboratory findings before the insertion of PTBD tubes were retrospectively evaluated. To assess the effect of confounding factors on the PTBD duration, multivariate linear regression analysis was applied, incorporating significant predictive factors identified in the univariate regression analysis. In the univariate regression analysis, the predictive factor that showed high correlation with the PTBD duration was the initial total bilirubin level (coefficient = 0.68, P < .001) followed by the short diameter of the largest stone (coefficient = 0.19, P = .056), and previous endoscopic sphincterotomy (coefficient = -2.50, P = .086). The multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the initial total bilirubin level (coefficient = 0.50, P < .001) and short diameter of the largest stone (coefficient = 0.16, P = .025) were significantly related to the PTBD duration. The total bilirubin level before PTBD tube insertion and the short diameter of the largest CBD stone were predictive factors for the PTBD duration in patients who underwent percutaneous CBD stone removal. Careful assessment of these factors might help in predicting the treatment period, thereby improving the quality of patient care.

Abstract A new, simple, and rapid assay for conjugated bilirubin that does not require serum-matrix standards was developed by using the enzyme bilirubin oxidase (EC 1.3.3.5). This procedure can also be modified to measure total bilirubin. Measurements from these assays were compared with results obtained with the Sigma 605 (Jendrassik-Gróf method), Sigma 550/551 (Walters-Gerarde method), and Kodak Ektachem (BuBc) bilirubin assays. The one-year study involved serum specimens from 283 infants younger than 30 days. Linear-regression analysis of data for conjugated bilirubin collected by this assay and by the Kodak Ektachem assay yielded a slope of 0.975, an intercept of 0.088, an Syx of 1.47 mg/L, and a correlation coefficient of 0.94 for a total of 49 specimens. Correlation was also good (r = 0.95) between results for total bilirubin by this assay and both the Sigma 605 and the Kodak Ektachem methods.

This study examined fruit intake among 276 female Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) community college students. Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors associated with fruit intake were determined. The attitudes which are potential predictors of daily fruit intake were also examined. Analysis showed that 33% ate fewer than the minimum recommended two daily servings of fruit. Students reported that fruit gave them energy, taste and cost were not barriers to consumption and that it would not be difficult to increase daily fruit consumption. A linear regression analysis revealed that beliefs that eating fruit leads to good health, having a habit of eating fruit, feeling energy, and weight loss accounted for 30% of the variance in fruit intake.

Some students perceive lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) positively, even though LGBT is a sexual deviation that is not appropriate with values and norms. There are several factors that influence an individual's perception of LGBT, including sexual identity. This study aims at looking at the contribution of sexual identity to student perceptions about LGBT. This research used a quantitative approach with a descriptive method and a simple linear regression analysis. The sample of this research was 385 taken from 15.752 undergraduate students of Universitas Negeri Padang which the sample was drawn by using the Slovin formula and continued with a Proportional Random Sampling technique. The instrument used was the Guttman model's sexual identity scale and the scale of students' perceptions of the LGBT Likert model. After analyzing the data with the descriptive technique and the simple linear regression analysis, the results showed that sexual identity significantly contributed to the students' perceptions of LGBT. This research has implications as a basis for counselors to help students avoid sexual identity mismatches and prevent the emergence of positive perceptions of LGBT.

The progress of the Islamic bank cannot be separated from the role of its customers who give trust to the bank to deposit their financial assets. It is a fact many groups of customers decide to be the customers of the Islamic bank because of their religiosity. The other influences factor of a customer’s decision is the quality of the product. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of product quality and level of customers’ religiosity towards customers’ decision whether to keep their funds in Syariah Mandiri Bank, Branch of Purwokerto, or not. The analytical tool used was multiple linear regression analysis, with a sample of 100 customers. The results indicate Y = 5,046 + 0,101X1 + 0,218X2. Based on F, it can be seen that both variables of product quality and religiosity simultanously affect the customers’ decision to keep theirfunds in BSM Branch of Purwokerto. Based on t test, it can be seen that independently, either variable of product quality or variables of religiosityinfluences the customers’ decision to keep their funds in BSM Branch of Purwokerto.
