There are many approaches on how to analyse business processes, but the simulation is still not widely employed due to high costs associated with simulation model creation. In this paper, an approach on how to automatically generate dynamic business process simulation model is presented. The approach discovers belief network of the process from an event log and uses it to generate a simulation model automatically. Such model then can be further customised to facilitate analysis. For evaluation of the approach, conformance of the simulation results with the source event logs was calculated. The simulation results were event logs that were generated during the simulation of the discovered models. The evaluation showed that the approach could be used for initial simulation model generation.

Maintaining dynamicity of business processes is one of the core issues of today's business as it enables businesses to adapt to constantly changing environment. Upon changing the processes, it is vital to assess possible impact, which is achieved by using simulation of dynamic processes. In order to implement dynamicity in business processes, it is necessary to have an ability to change components of the process (a set of activities, a content of activity, a set of activity sequences, a set of rules, performers and resources) or dynamically select them during execution. This problem attracted attention of researches over the past few years; however, there is no proposed solution, which ensures the business process (BP) dynamicity. This paper proposes and specifies dynamic business process (DBP) simulation model, which satisfies all of the formulated DBP requirements. Šiuolaikiniam verslui svarbu vykdyti procesus dinamiškai, norint laiku prisitaikyti prie besikeičiančios aplinkos. Keičiant procesus reikia įvertinti keitimo pasekmes, o įvertinimui galima naudoti dinaminių procesų imitaciją. Siekiant realizuoti procesų dinamiką, reikia imitacijos metu turėti galimybę keisti proceso komponentus. Problema pritraukia daug dėmesio jau kelerius metus, tačiau vis dar nepasiūlytas sprendimas, kuris užtikrintų verslo proceso dinamiškumą. Šis straipsnis siūlo ir pateikia dinaminio verslo proceso imitacinį modelį, kuris atitinka anksčiau suformuotus dinaminio verslo proceso reikalavimus.

Organizations currently need to conduct an analysis of their business processes in order to improve business performance and productivity. In addition, this analysis can be a way to compete with competitors. However, the analysis of this business process if done manually requires considerable time. Process mining is a technique that helps solve this problem. Information systems that are owned by a company certainly store their every business activity. This data can be processed to find business processes that occur. This data is usually called an event log. Event logs help organizations to find gaps between business processes that occur with those expected. Based on this gap business processes can later be evaluated for later improvement.

The purpose of research. The goal of this study is to analyze different domestic software packages intended for modeling of business processes involving queues and time parameters. The main analysis criteria are: the possibility of graphical development or conversion of the business process block diagram to the model; automatic generation of simulation model; quick and convenient construction of domain-specific application; the variety of result analysis tools. The relevance of the problems to choose the optimal modeling tool is determined by the need to use only domestic software for business process investigation in the military and some scientific organizations, and by the lack of information about existing software products. In this paper, the subject of study is the Russian simulation modeling environment GPSS Studio.Materials and methods. In this article, the analysis of the possibility of effective usage of GPSS Studio environment during business processes analysis and synthesis is performed. The study was performed on the available examples of different applications of this tool, and by the creation of the model analyzing business processes that are typical for any HR department.Results. Taking into account the performed analysis of functionality and practical applications of the GPSS Studio environment, the good prospects of its application for modeling of business processes involving queues and time parameters are shown. The further system improvements intended for effective business process modeling are proposed.Conclusion. As a result of the performed study, we can do the following conclusions and recommendations:– The GPSS Studio graphical editor can be successfully used for the graphical description of the business processes when it is required to analyze: queues, the load of resources, and the time characteristics of the processing,– The simulation model is automatically generated from the graphical description. The produced model can be finally debugged and verified with the GPSS Studio,– The standalone simulation application working in terms of the subject domain can be built from the simulation model using the simulation environment,– Using this application, it is possible to perform complex business process simulation modeling by means of varying system parameters and performing of singular experiments, a series of dedicated experiments, and optimizing experiments,– Since the GPSS Studio concepts include the possibility to create domain-specific libraries of standard blocks, it is possible to create a library of standard elements similar to IDEF, BPMN, DFD block charts to facilitate faster description and modeling of business processes. After the creation of such a library, there would be no need to manually write GPSS code, since the business process model could be built by a simple connection of standard blocks.

This chapter discusses the importance of business process simulation, while illustrating the relationship between business process reengineering (BPR) and change management, it focuses the discussion on the role of simulation in supporting BPR and the effect of simulation on business environment related skills, business management related skills, leadership related skills, employees empowering level, process improvement, ethical issues, and stakeholders’ management skills. The chapter discusses the value of simulation in implementing reengineering strategies and argues the future challenges of business process simulation and describes the limitations of simulation technology in reengineering business processes. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of the characteristics of successful simulation and simulation applications.

In order to make a rational planning of CAPP-PPC process, the differences of product serial and concurrent CAPP-PPC process were studyed in this paper. Based on Witness, Three kinds of product serial and concurrent CAPP-PPC process simulation model were established for products with different complicated degrees. Simulation results show the time of concurrent process is much shorter than serial process, for complex products, especially obvious.

Process mining is widely adopted in organizations to gain deep insights about running business processes. This can be achieved by applying different process mining techniques like discovery, conformance checking, and performance analysis. These techniques are applied on event logs, which need to be extracted from the organization’s databases beforehand. This not only implies access to databases, but also detailed knowledge about the database schema, which is often not available. In many real-world scenarios, however, process execution data is available as redo logs. Such logs are used to bring a database into a consistent state in case of a system failure. This paper proposes a semi-automatic approach to extract an event log from redo logs alone. It does not require access to the database or knowledge of the databaseschema. The feasibility of the proposed approach is evaluated on two synthetic redo logs.

Earning profits in business promotes optimization of business processes. For the analysis of business processes, realistic simulation models are an important prerequisite. The research question is as follows: What is business process based on gap processes? The aim of the research is to carry out mathematical analysis of gap processes underpinning elaboration of a simulation model for optimization of a bursty business process. The meanings of such key concepts as “bursty business process,” “binary customer behavior,” “gap,” and “gap processes” are studied. In this chapter, a new simulation model is presented that allows a realistic analysis of business process based on gap processes. The model is based on the assumption that the gaps between two buyers are statistically independent on each other, which has been proofed as a good practical approximation. The novel contribution of the manuscript is revealed in the newly created simulation model based on gap processes. Directions of further research are indicated.

In light of the proliferation of information technology in every area of society/business, its adoption by academia seems like a natural extension of this trend. What the authors find, however, is that few examples exist of the use of Business Process Management to improve processes in academia. This chapter presents simulations as a necessary mechanism for understanding and overseeing organizations as they undergo a continuous process of change. Enterprises, their organization, business processes, and supporting information technology must be understood as socio-technical systems that consist of people (human actors) and technical subsystems and their complicated relationships. In designing, redesigning, and improving such systems, modeling and simulation methods are not only relevant, but essential.

Abstract α-algorithm is suitable to discover a large class of workflow (WF) nets based on the behaviour recorded in event logs, with the main limiting assumption that the event log is complete. Our research has been aimed at finding ways of discovering business process models based on examples of traces, ie, logs of workflow actions that do not meet the requirement of completeness. In this aim, we have modified the existing and introduced a new relation between activities recorded in the event log, which has led to a partial correction of the process models discovering technique, including the α-algorithm. We have also introduced the notion of causally complete logs, from which our modified algorithm can produce the same result as the α-algorithm from complete logs. The effect of these modifications on the efficiency of the process model discovering is mostly evident for business processes in which many activities can be performed in parallel. The application of the modified method for discovering block-structured models of parallel business processes is presented in this paper.
