Some physico-chemical properties of ten pomegranate accessions collected from different districts in the Kurdistan region of Iraq were investigated in this paper. Considerable correlations between the characteristics studied were found and valuable pomological traits were observed. Cluster analysis showed the homonyms between some pomegranate accessions. Principle component analysis reported that the component describing the greatest variability also positively correlated with fruit weight, total aril weight, total peel weight, volume of juice, total soluble solids (TSS), fruit length, fruit diameter, pH, aril length, and 100-seed fresh weight, but negatively correlated with titratable acidity (TA). Fruit weight was firmly correlated with total aril weight, total peel weight, volume of juice, TSS, aril length, 100-seed fresh weight, fruit length and fruit diameter. The volume of juice was correlated with TSS, aril length, 100-seed fresh weight, fruit length, fruit diameter and it was observed that with an increase in the fruit size, the volume of juice increased as well. The correlation between total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity was not observed. The associations found among physical and chemical traits suggest that consumers should use large fruits with large arils so that they have more juice. Thus, ?Choman?, ?Raniyeh? and ?Halabja? were juicier than other accessions.

The objective of this study was to compare the physico-chemical properties of 10 apple cultivars grown in mid hills of India. Fruit weight, volume, size, total soluble solids (T.S.S.), total sugars, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid content were measured in the cultivars Aurora, Brookfield, Braeburn, Galaxy, Azetec, Scarlet Gala, Marini Red, Jonagold, Royal Gala and Royal Delicious. The results showed significant differences in physico-chemical attributes of apple cultivars. Among all the cultivars the maximum fruit size (50.66 mm length, 74.73 mm diameter) and fruit weight (170.12 g) were observed in cv. Royal Delicious, while the minimum fruit size (40.52 mm length, 53.03 mm diameter) and weight (110.97 g) were measured in Azetec and Aurora, respectively. The highest volume (196.79 ml) of fruit was registered in Royal Delicious in comparison to the minimum (125.75 ml) in Aurora. The maximum T.S.S. (14.27 °B) and acidity (0.717%) was noticed in Scarlet Gala and Marini Red, respectively. While the minimum T.S.S. and acidity was observed in Marini Red (11.20 °B) and Azetec (0.186%). The ascorbic acid varied from 6.07 mg/100 g in Royal Gala to 9.86 mg/100 g in Braeburn, whereas the total sugar ranged 11.36% in Royal Gala to 7.06% in Jonagold.

Nine different accessions of water apples were evaluated at Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute(ITFRI), Solok, West Sumatera from January 2013 to December 2014. This present study was aimed to evaluate the variability, heritability, genetic advance and its characters in nine different accessions to provide useful information in the improvement program of water apples. The research used Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two replications. The ANOVA results exposed significant differences at 5% probability level for all characters. Genotypic variance on fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, leaf length were broad. However, the genotypic variance on total soluble solids, leaf width were narrow. The phenotypic variation for all characters was broad. The heritability estimation was categorized as low, moderate, and high. High heritability estimation was recorded for fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, and leaf diameter. Moderate heritability estimation was noticed for total soluble solids. Leaf width had low heritability estimation. High heritability and high genetic advance were observed on fruit weight.

The study was tested the technical feasibility of bagging eggplant fruits during production to protect them against Eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) following randomized complete block with 6 treatments. Highest number of marketable fruits per plant was produced by imported white bag (12.33), which was followed by butter paper bag (10.67). Maximum aborted fruit was obtained from the imported brown bag (23.33%) and HDPE bag (20.00%). The highest average fruit weight (363.33 g) was obtained from fruits bagged with Imported white, while maximum fruit length and fruit diameter was also produced from imported white bag (15.27 cm and 11.23 cm, respectively). Zero percent damage by eggplant fruit and shoot borer was produced by imported brown bag, imported white bag and butter paper bag, while higher infection was observed in open fruit (control) (17.70 %), HDPE bag (11.70 %). Bagging eggplant fruit produced 38.78 to 58.20 t/ha, while open fruit (control) produced only 35.66 t/ha. The highest calculated fruit yield 58.20 tons/ha was estimated from imported white bag and other bagging fruits were local brown bag (46.74 t/ha), HDPE bag (45.00 t/ha), butter paper bag (43.23 t/ha). The bagging of eggplant fruits with imported white bag and butter paper bag were more effective in reducing damage by eggplant fruit and shoot borer than the other bagging treatments and the control. These two treatments produced higher number of consumers preferred fruit, without negative effects on the color of the skin, fresh weight and fruit abortion, thus resulting in higher economic gains.

Varietal variation in apricot causes differential changes in fruit quality during ripening. A study was executed to evaluate the effect of apricot varietal variation on fruit physico-chemical and sensory attributes during fruit ripening. Fruits of two apricot cultivars, ‘Old Cap’ and ‘Red Flesh’ obtained from Baluchistan were monitored at ambient conditions (25 ± 2 °C and 60-65% RH) during fruit ripening for physico-chemical and sensory attributes. Irrespective to days at shelf during fruit ripening, fruits of ‘Red Flesh’ apricot exhibited significantly reduced fruit weight loss with greater fruit firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), total phenolic content (TPC), ascorbic acid and antioxidant scavenging activity (ASA) than ‘Old Cap’ apricot fruits. However, titratable acidity (TA) of ‘Old Cap’ apricot fruits remained significantly higher than ‘Red Flesh’ apricot fruits during ripening. At eating soft stage, sensory attributes including fruit pulp colour, taste, flavour and overall acceptability of ‘Red Flesh’ apricot fruits were superior to ‘Old Cap’ apricot fruits. In conclusion, ‘Red Flesh’ apricot showed better fruit physico-chemical attributes during fruit ripening and fruit sensory attributes at eating soft stage than ‘Old Cap’ apricot fruits.

High temperature (HT) significantly affects crop physiological traits and reduces productivity in plants. To increase yields as well as survival of crops under HT, developing heat-tolerant plants is one of the main targets in crop breeding programs. The present study attempted to investigate the linkage of the heat tolerance between the seedling and reproductive growth stages of tomato cultivars ’Dafnis‘ and ’Minichal.’ This research was undertaken to evaluate heat tolerance under two experimental designs such as screening at seedling stage and screening from reproductive traits in greenhouses. Survival rate and physiological responses in seedlings of tomatoes with 4-5 true leaves were estimated under HT (40 °C, RH 70%, day/night, respectively) and under two control and HT greenhouse conditions (day time 28 °C and 40 °C, respectively). Heat stress significantly affected physiological–chemical (photosynthesis, electrolyte conductivity, proline) and vegetative parameters (plant height, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight) in all tomato seedlings. The findings revealed that regardless of tomato cultivars the photosynthesis, chlorophyll, total proline and electrical conductivity parameters were varied in seedlings during the heat stress period. The heat tolerance rate of tomatoes in the seedling stage might not always be associated with reproductive parameters. HT reduced fruit parameters such as fruit weight (31.9%), fruit length (14.1%), fruit diameter (19.1%), and fruit hardness (9.1%) compared to NT under HT in heat-susceptible tomato cultivar ‘Dafnis’, while in heat-tolerant cultivar ‘Minichal’ fruit length (7.1%) and fruit diameter (12.1%) was decreased by the effects of HT, but on the contrary fruit weight (3.6%) and fruit hardness (8.3%) were increased. In conclusion, screening and selection for tomatoes should be evaluated at the vegetative and reproductive stages with consideration of reproductive parameters.

Eleven morphologically diverse cultivated eggplant accessions were used for hybridization following half diallel mating design to obtain 55 hybrids. Evaluation of hybrids along with the parents was conducted over two locations followed by randomised complete block design with three replications to study gene action and combining ability of 15 morphological and biochemical traits. The analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among the environments and interaction of genotype and environment, except for fruit length to width ratio. Additive gene effects were significant for the inheritance of these traits and expression of these additive genes were greatly affected by environments. The general combining ability (GCA) was greater than their respective specific combining ability (SCA) for all traits except for fruit yield per plant. High values of GCA and SCA effects for characters of interest were dispersed among different genotypes. From this study it was observed that the best parental line was BT15 based on days to first flowering, total number of fruits per plant, total soluble solids and total phenol content. Besides, the parent BM5 showed good general combining ability effects for fruit yield per plant, fruit length and fruit length to width ratio and the parent BB1 performed good general combining ability for fruit diameter, fruit girth and fruit weight. Besides, other parents showed the best performance for only one trait. On the other hand, the hybrid BT6 × BT15 was reported bearing early flowering with high total phenol content and the hybrid BM9 × BB26 has high fruit yield with high soluble solids. Besides, the hybrid BM9 × BB1 has a high fruit diameter and fruit weight. All other hybrids except for these three (BT6 × BT15, BM9 × BB26 and BM9 × BB1) were shown the best performance for only one trait. Hence, based on the desired trait, the hybrid can be selected for future use after large scale evaluation.

The physical and chemical characteristics of five pomegranate cultivars (Mridula, Ganesh, White muscut, G-137 and Jalor seedless) were examined in the present investigation. Physical properties of different cultivars were determined such as major diameter (85.05 to 91.62 mm), intermediate diameter (76.85 to 87.83 mm), minor diameter (79.86 to 90.01 mm), sphericity (0.903 to 0.937), fruit weight (294.4 to 404.14 g), fruit volume (289 to 387 mL), number of arils per fruit, weight of 100 arils were evaluated and analysed for the varietal difference. In addition, properties such as peel moisture content (68.72 to 74.15% w.b.), aril moisture content (78.25 to 81.82% w.b.), peel ash content (0.81 to 1.51%), aril ash content (0.29 to 0.53%), juice pH (3.47 to 3.96), total soluble solids (11.60 to 13.00 °Brix), titratable acidity (0.42 to 0.58%), total phenolic content, juice yield per fruit (104 to 186 mL) juice turbidity (142.20 to 364.50 NTU) and textural properties, like fruit compressive strength/firmness of arils (23.09 to 34.54 N), cutting strength of peel (84.33 to 111.35 N) and aril skin puncture force (0.28 to 0.38 N) were also investigated. Overall results suggested that the measured physico-chemical properties were quite different by the cultivar differences.

Cucumis melo L. is characterized with a great polymorphism according to many agronomical features. Study the variability of melon flowering and fruit traits is an initial step in the breeding program. The current study aimed to identify the genetic variability in the melon collection according to flowering and fruit traits in order to be used in breeding programs. It was evaluated fifty melon genotypes belong to different groups - cantalupensis, reticulatus, makuwa, inodorus, and agrestis. The studied collection consists of Bulgarian old cultivars, hybrids, landraces, PI, and introduced lines. Investigated genotypes were characterized by nine quantitative fruit traits - days to flowering, sex expression, days to ripening, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, fruit weight, seed cavity diameter, and total soluble solids. It was established great variability in studied characteristics measured by a coefficient of variation from 7.73 to 39.85%. Significant correlations between fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, cavity diameter, and fruit weight were established. Principal component analysis grouped variables into three components which explain 69.89% of the total variation. Cluster analysis divided genotypes into six groups of similarities. Among the genotypes examined, they have a relatively high level of variability and their polymorphism could be used in a breeding program aimed at combining valuable characters.

In this study, the effect of different harvest period on fruit quality and phytochemical properties of short and day neutral strawberries was investigated. For this purpose, two day-neutral ('Fern', 'Kabarl') and four short day ('Camorosa', 'Sweet Charlie', 'Rubygem' and 'Festival') strawberry varieties were harvested at three different harvest period. Harvested fruits were analysed 15 and 30 days intervals for short and day-neutral varieties. Pomological analysis such as fruit size, firmness, fruit weight, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), pH and total anthocyanin, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were studied. Results of the present study indicated that fruits from later harvest periods displayed smaller fruit size, lower pH and TSS content but higher TA and fruit firmness. Also, both short and day neutral varieties have higher phytochemical content at later harvest period in terms of total phenolics, total anthocyanin and antioxidant capacity.

In a field experiment, to identify the best sweet cherry varieties for high density orcharding, maximum canopy volume (18.94 cm3) was recorded in variety ‘Steela’ and minimum in ‘Lambert’ while, ‘Bigarreau Napoleon’ had maximum TCSA (213 cm2). Trees grown under HDP have lower TCSA in comparison to normal density. Primary and secondary branch girth were maximum in ‘Bigarreau Napoleon’ whereas, annual extension growth and shoot thickness were high in ‘Steela’. Yield, yield efficiency and cumulative yield efficiency were registered maximum in ‘Bigarreau Napoleon’ and ‘Bigarreau Noir Grossa’ cultivars. Largest fruit weight, fruit length and fruit diameter were found maximum (10.16 g/fruit), (25.51 mm) (25.20 mm) respectively in ‘Bigarreau Napoleon’. Total soluble solids were found maximum in ‘Bigarreau Noir Grossa’ (17.30 0Brix) among the studied cultivars. Correlation matrix showed that TCSA had positive correlation with canopy volume, primary branch girth and secondary branch girth and fruit weight showed positive correlation with fruit length and fruit diameter.
