In absolute and semi-empirical calculations of full gamma-energy peak efficiencies (ep), geometrical/compositional data characterizing the detector should be known in much detail. Among these, detector crystal edge rounding (bulletization), if neglected, may lead to large systematic errors, especially for low gamma-energies and close counting geometries. The errors show quadratic dependence on the extent of bulletization (bulletization radius). Mathematical/analytical solution to the problem - not reported so far - is elaborated in the present work. Relevant mathematical formulae are derived for a number of counting arrangements most frequently encountered in gamma-spectrometry practice (point, disc, cylinder, and Marinelli sources). These are subsequently programmed for numerical calculations and are now part of commercially available ANGLE software. Extensive calculation testing is performed for HPGe (both p- and n-type) and LEPD detectors (several sizes each), with various sources (point, disc, cylinder, Marinelli) and counting geometries (0-20 cm source-to-detector distance). Energy range considered was 10-3000 keV. To elucidate the significance of the issue, an error propagation study was conducted: results with bulletization taken into account are compared to those when bulletization was neglected. Corresponding errors are tabulated in an extensive Excel file. The file comprises about 152 000 error calculation results which are available for download; a few characteristic ones are selected for presenting in the paper. ANGLE proved handy (in programming) and fast (in calculations) when accomplishing this task. The data convincingly illustrate the impact of detector bulletization on gamma-efficiency and thus the need to account for. Even only slight bulletization (1-2 mm bulletization radius) is not negligible in many realistic counting situations. Reader/analyst can (1) compare his/her counting situation with these data so as to get the first impression of the problem and (2) use the mathematical model presented and/or ANGLE software to address the issue.

Electrically conductive yarns (ECYs) are gaining increasing applications in woven textile materials, especially in woven sensors suitable for incorporation into clothing. In this paper, the effect of the yarn count of ECYs woven into fabric on values of electrical resistance is analyzed. We also observe how the direction of action of elongation force, considering the position of the woven ECY, effects the change in the electrical resistance of the electrically conductive fabric. The measurements were performed on nine different samples of fabric in a plain weave, into which were woven ECYs with three different yarn counts and three different directions. Relationship curves between values of elongation forces and elongation to break, as well as relationship curves between values of electrical resistance of fabrics with ECYs and elongation, were experimentally obtained. An analytical mathematical model was also established, and analysis was conducted, which determined the models of function of connection between force and elongation, and between electrical resistance and elongation. The connection between the measurement results and the mathematical model was confirmed. The connection between the mathematical model and the experimental results enables the design of ECY properties in woven materials, especially textile force and elongation sensors.

Parabolic trough collector (PTC) is one of the most widespread solar concentration technologies and represents the biggest share of the CSP market; it is currently used in various applications, such as electricity generation, heat production for industrial processes, water desalination in arid regions and industrial cooling. The current paper provides a synopsis of the commonly used sun trackers and investigates the impact of various sun tracking modes on thermal performance of a parabolic trough collector. Two sun-tracking configurations, full automatic and semi-automatic, and a stationary one have numerically been investigated. The simulation results have shown that, under the system conditions (design, operating and weather), the PTC's performance depends strongly on the kind of sun tracking technique and on how this technique is exploited. Furthermore, the current study has proven that there are some optimal semi-automatic configurations that are more efficient than one-axis sun tracking systems. The comparison of the mathematical model used in this paper with the thermal profile of some experimental data available in the literature has shown a good agreement with a remarkably low relative error (2.93%).

To investigate the microscopic second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of the 1-salicylidene-3-thio-semicarbazone Schiff base compound, the electric dipole moments (μ), linear static polarizabilities (α) and first static hyperpolarizabilites (β) have been calculated using finite field second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (FF MP2) theory. The ab-initio results on (hyper)polarizabilities show that the investigated molecule might have microscopic NLO properties with non-zero values. To understand the NLO behavior in the context of molecular orbital structure, we have also examined the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the HOMO-LUMO gap in the same theoretical framework as the (hyper)polarizability calculations. In addition to the NLO properties, the electronic transition spectra have been computed using a semi-empirical method (ZINDO). ZINDO calculation results show that the electronic transition wavelengths have been estimated to be shorter than 400 nm.

Various uncertain factors affect the movement of the welding robot, thus welding gun tend to deviate from the theory of welding position which reduces the welding accuracy, of which the revolute pair clearance have an greater effect on the movement of the welding robot. In order to study the influence of revolute pair clearance to the end pose accuracy of welding robot, the mathematical model of revolute pair clearance was established, and the software SolidWorks was used for establishing the welding robot model, making simulations of the mechanical arm with joint clearance and no joint clearance. At last, the movement characteristic of the hinge shaft is attained. The simulation results showed that the shaft velocity and displacement of mechanical arm with joint clearance has a certain degree of fluctuation, which affecting the end pose accuracy of welding robot , and reducing the movement stability and the welding accuracy of welding robot.

Abstract In this paper, a theoretical study is presented on enhancement of the solar still performance by using the exhaust gases passing inside a chimney under the still basin. The impact of the exhaust gases temperature on the solar still temperature, productivity, and efficiency are considered. The performance of solar still with chimney is compared with that of conventional solar still. The study is carried out under the hot and climate conditions of Upper Egypt. A complete transient mathematical model of the physical model including the solar still regions temperatures, productivity, and heat transfer between the solar still and the exhaust gases are constructed. The mathematical model is solved numerically by using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and is programmed by using MATLAB. The mathematical model is validated using an experimental work. The results show that the solar still saline water temperature increases and productivity with using and rising the exhaust gases. Furthermore, the impact of using exhaust gases on the still performance in winter is greater than in summer. using chimney exhaust gases at 75 °C and 125 °C enhances the daily freshwater yield of the conventional still by more than three times and about six times in winter, respectively, and about two and half times and more than three times in summer, respectively.

A method is described to conduct an integrated Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) simulation of sails that is based upon knowledge of the sail’s design shape geometry and membrane material properties. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the sail structure and a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of the aerodynamic field are combined and iteratively solved to compute the actual flying shape of the sail under aerodynamic load, the stress strain behavior of the sail membrane, the integrated aerodynamic forces produced by the sail such as driving force and heel moment, and the resulting loads on sheets, halyards, etc. An important contribution of this particular method is the incorporation of wrinkling phenomena into the FEA portion of the calculation. Results from a study of working sails for a 30’ MORC racing yacht designed by Nelson-Marek (NM) in the 1990’s are presented and discussed with particular emphasis on the variability of primary load paths with changing trim and sailing conditions as well as the impact of sail deformation in the direction of relatively small stresses that is often poorly addressed in many proprietary sail construction methods.

Multi-layered cement-based piezoelectric composites could enable accurate real-time detection of the concrete structure deformation induced by impact load. An analytical method for quantifying the impact response of the multi-layered cement-based piezoelectric composite is established based on the piezo-elasticity, and a general transfer matrix description for the composite with any number of layers is derived. The motion of the composite is decomposed into natural modes according to its physical significance of vibration modes. The mechanical and electrical solutions are obtained via the mode summation method and the virtual work principle. In order to give a clear demonstration, some numerical simulations are conducted to verify the validity of the theoretical analysis. Moreover, the current analytical method considers the electrode as an extra layer and evaluates the effect of its thickness and material on the performance of the multi-layered cement-based piezoelectric composite. It can be seen that the mathematical model presented in this article provides a rigorous tool for the analysis of the multi-layered cement-based piezoelectric composite and therefore could benefit the design of certain types of smart devices under impact load.

In this paper, an attempt is made to develop a method for determining the critical cutting speed of the threads of the false edge of the edge-forming mechanism of the weaving rapier machine. The proposed calculation method takes into account the impact nature of the cutting process at a critical speed, which allows taking into account the mutual influence of the parameters of the working process and more fully assess the mechanics of this process, in which the intensity of the cutting force and the value of the contact stress take the maximum value. The paper calculates the critical cutting speed for some of the main types of threads used and the parameters of the knife blade. The presented calculation results can be used to select rational design parameters of the knife blade, depending on the type of processed threads, when designing and researching new edge-forming mechanisms on looms.

One of the most important problems that pose a serious threat to the functioning of railways is the problem of freight cars derailment. However, according to statistics, the number of cases of the derailments of freight cars in trains annually grows. Тo prevent such cases, the necessary preventive measures are developed, and to study the causes of their occurrence, a significant number of mathematical models, programs and software systems created by leading domestic and foreign scientists. Studies of such mathematical models by the authors of this work have led to the conclusion that they are not sufficiently detailed to the extent that it is necessary for analyze the reasons of its derailment. At the same time, an analysis of the causes of the rolling stock derailments on the railways of Ukraine over the past five years showed that in about 20 % of cases they are obvious, and in 7 % of cases they are not obvious and implicitly expressed. The study of such cases of rolling stock derailment during an official investigation by the railway and during forensic railway transport expertises requires the use of an improved mathematical model of a freight car, which would allow a quantitative assessment of the impact of its parameters and rail track on the conditions of railway accidents. Therefore, taking into account the main reasons that caused the occurrence of such railroad accidents over the last five years on the railways of Ukraine, the article selected the main directions for improving the mathematical model of a freight car, allowing to cover all the many factors (explicit and hidden) and identify the most significant ones regarding the circumstances of the derailment rolling stock off the track, established on the basis of a computer experiment. It is proposed in the mathematical model of a freight car to take into account the guiding force, the value of which is one of the main indicators of the stability of the rolling stock. The authors of the article noted that not taking into account the influence of the guiding forces on the dynamics of the freight car can lead to an erroneous determination of the reasons for the rolling stock derailment or even to the impossibility of establishing them.
