The direct motive for this study was the find of exostoses of the external auditory canal on three skulls from ancient period (2nd-3rd century) which were excavated on site No. 80 in 1996 in Sremska Mitrovica (Sirmium). Among 37 buried individuals, only nine of them had temporal bones preserved. According to archaeological documentation they were probably part of the urban poor, slaves or freedmen manual laborers. In any case they belonged to the lowest social status of ancient Sirmium, which was confirmed by anthropological analysis. Auditory exostoses are bone masses located in the external auditory canal. Most researches agree that the environment (especially water temperature, but also water salinity, atmospheric temperature and wind action) plays a significant role in the development of this trait.

Auditory exostoses are bone masses located in the external auditory canal. Currently, most researchers agree that the environment (especially water temperature, but also atmospheric temperature and wind action) plays a pivotal role in the development of exostosis. Exostoses are a condition in which the external auditory canal becomes stenotic secondary to hyperplastic bone formation. Also known as ‘‘surfer’s ear,’’ exostoses are thought to be a reactive process from repeated stimulation by cold water because it occurs commonly in populations such as beach lifeguards and surfers. Exostoses are usually asymptomatic and discovered on routine otoscopy. Rarely, exostoses become sufficiently obstructive to impair hearing or cause recurrent otitis externa. Exostoses are almost always bilateral, symmetric, and occurring in the medial portion of the external auditory canal. AbstractObjectives:We describe a rare case of spontaneous temporomandibular joint herniation into the external auditory canal, and we also review the presentation, aetiology and management of such cases.Case report:An 87-year-old woman presented with a four-month history of left-sided otorrhoea and otalgia. Examination revealed a soft, polypoid mass in the left ear canal. When the patient opened her mouth the lesion disappeared. Subsequent computed tomographic imaging of the patient's temporal bones confirmed an 8.6 mm defect in the antero-inferior portion of the left ear canal, with herniation of retrodiscal soft tissues.Conclusion:The external auditory canal is intimately related to the temporomandibular joint, separated only by its bony anterior wall. Neoplasm, trauma or inflammation in this area can result in displacement of the temporomandibular joint into the ear canal; however, spontaneous herniation is rare. Persistence of the primitive foramen of Huschke can result in dehiscence of the anterior canal wall, allowing articular tissue to prolapse into the ear canal. Surgical closure of these defects is known to be effective in ameliorating symptomatic cases.

OBJECTIVE: The study goal was to demonstrate the prevalence and severity of external auditory exostoses (EAEs) in a population of surfers and to examine the relationship between these lesions and the length of time surfed as well as water temperature in which the swimmers surfed. It was hypothesized that subjects who predominantly surfed in colder waters had more frequent and more severe exostoses. METHODS: Two hundred two avid surfers (91% male and 9% female, median age 17 years) were included in the study. EAEs were graded based on the extent of external auditory canal patency; grades of normal (100% patency), mild (66% to 99% patency), and moderate-severe (<66% patency) were assigned. Otoscopic findings were correlated with data collected via questionnaires that detailed surfing habits. RESULTS: There was a 38% overall prevalence of EAEs, with 69% of lesions graded as mild and 31% graded as moderate-severe. Professional surfers (odds ratio 3.8) and those subjects who surfed predominantly in colder waters (odds ratio 5.8) were found to be at a significantly increased risk for the development of EAEs. The number of years surfed was also found to be significant, increasing one's risk for developing an exostosis by 12% per year and for developing more severe lesions by 10% per year. Individuals who had moderate-severe EAEs were significantly more likely to be willing to surf in colder waters than were those who had mild EAEs (odds ratio 4.3). CONCLUSIONS: EAEs are more prevalent in cold water surfers, and additional years surfing increase one's risk not only for developing an EAE but also for developing more severe lesions.

AbstractObjectives:To describe the clinical features of external auditory canal cholesteatoma, and to assess the outcome following bony meatoplasty with tragal cartilage and perichondrium graft repair.Methods:A retrospective review was carried out, comprising all patients with external auditory canal cholesteatoma who presented between January 2007 and December 2011. Patients underwent pre-operative audiometry and computed tomography imaging of the temporal bones, before undergoing bony meatoplasty via a postauricular incision. Pre- and post-operative comparisons were made of patients' otological symptoms and the otoscopic appearance of the external ear canal.Results and conclusion:Eight patients were included in the analyses. The median age of patients was 46.5 years (range 14–68 years), with a male to female ratio of 1:1. The median length of follow up was 16 months. The most common presenting features were unilateral otalgia and purulent otorrhoea. All patients had relatively advanced disease at presentation, with erosion of the temporal bone. All patients underwent bony meatoplasty via a postauricular approach to eradicate the disease. Bony meatoplasty was successful in the definitive management of external ear canal cholesteatoma.

Abstract Humpback grouper is the one of marine fish which can culture. The major problem of humpback grouper culture is high mortality at short time caused by pathogen infection include virus, bacterial, parasite and fungi. Pathogen infection at humpback grouper fry caused by bacterial from genus Vibrio spp. There was exceeding with vaccination. This research use oral vaccination with whole cell. Vibrio alginolyticus Whole cell as oral vaccine is suggested to prevent high mortality at humpback grouper fry. The purpose of this research is to know the successful about using Vibrio alginolyticus Whole Cell as Oral Vaccine to prevent high mortality of humpback grouper fry (Chromileptes altivelis). The experiment was done June until December 2009 at Gastroenteritis of Laboratory Tropical Disease Centre (TDC) of Airlangga University Surabaya and PT Benur Puteri Situbondo. The methods of this research is descriptive. Major parameter observed in this research was survival rate (%) and Relative Percentage Survival (RPS) of humpback grouper fry. Other parameter observed in this research was water quality include water temperature, pH, water salinity and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). Result of research shows that there are difference of survival rate between fingerling fish vaccination and fingerling fish non vaccination (control). Survival rate of humpback grouper fry which vaccine of Whole Cell 66 % even though survival rate of humpback grouper fry which non vaccine of Whole Cell (control) 46 %. Relative Percentage Survival (RPS) of humpback grouper fry which vaccine of Whole Cell 37 %. The value of RPS was resulted at this research shows low value so that must to perfecting and must to do again research. Water temperature 27-29oC, pH 7,3-7,5, water salinity 31-32 ppt and dissolved oxygen 5-6 ppm.

The catchability coefficient, q, of a population of the western rock lobster P. cygnus was calculated monthly from November 1969 to January 1973 using measurements of catch, effort, population density, and area of reef. The catchability coefficient varied significantly during this time and was positively correlated with water temperature and water salinity, and negatively correlated with the percentage of rock lobsters in a premoult condition. A linear combination of these three factors was highly correlated with the catchability coefficient (P < 0.001) and appears to offer a method of adjusting the catchability coefficient and so leading to an improved stock assessment for this species.

According to some factors such as participation, interactions, identification and security, Iran's traditional bazaars are good examples of social sustainability. In fact, bazaars are not considered as merely an economic environment but also an environment for many social activities due to their status and their location in the important environments and centres of the city, and the significant role and social status of market's businessmen in the city. However, in the modern industrial era and with appearance of new urban elements, it can be observed that many spaces for commuting and many urban traditional environments took important social-cultural functions. Under these circumstances, this research used the descriptive analytical method to focus on evaluating the environments of persistent traditional social business centres in order to achieve persistence in modern social business centres through evaluating and studying the historical background of business centres, urban services and traditional elements that form them.

Objective: Comparative analysis of the structure of the external auditory canal (EAC) according to computed tomography (CT) scans of the temporal bones in patients with acquired post-inflammatory atresia of the EAC and patients with safe chronic suppurative otitis media (SCSOM) without atresia. Patients and methods: 42 patients (43 ears) with acquired post-inflammatory atresia of the EAC and 11 patients (22 ears) with bilateral SCSOM without acquired atresia were included in the study. Based on the original axial СT images and multi-planar reformation images were measured: thickness of the anterior wall in bony part of EAC; anterior tympanomeatal angle and the distance from the lateral process of the malleus to the anterior wall of an EAC; lumen of the EAC in front of the tympanic sulcus. Results: The lumen of the bone part of the EAC in patients with acquired post-inflammatory atresia is 17,0% less than in patients with SCSOM without atresia; patients with acquired post-inflammatory atresia have a more acute anterior tympanomeatal angle (33° versus 68°) than patients with SCSOM without atresia. The thickness of the anterior wall of the EAC in the bone part in patients with acquired post-inflammatory atresia of the EAC does not statistically differ from the analogous parameter in patients with SCSOM without atresia. Conclusion: The revealed results indirectly indicate the presence of certain features of the structure of the external ear in patients with acquired post-inflammatory atresia of the EAC such as narrower anterior tympanomeatal angle and lumen of the bone part. These features of the EAC structure may contribute to the more likely development of post-inflammatory atresia development.

This chapter explains that the urban poor played a significant role in the protests that brought down Suharto. Then, after 1998, some organizations emerged that supported the urban poor in their efforts to reform their local communities. But there was no coherent movement during the New Order, nor has there been since. Instead, the urban poor have had to look after themselves, engaging in the politics of the everyday and using defensive forms of action to protect their gains and respond to impending threats. The most significant change since democratization has been the recognition of the urban poor as a voting constituency. Nevertheless, in the absence of a political party with a particular and demonstrated interest in the politics of the poor, activism in support of the urban poor remains fragmented and confined primarily to individual rather than collective action.
