People have three ways of responding to neighborhood problems: leaving (exit), political action (voice), and doing nothing (passivity). The model assumes: 1. Voice is more likely to ameliorate neighborhood problems than exit or passivity; exit, in fact, can make things worse, 2. Rational behavior on the part of residents, coupled with constraints that limit options: status, race, the responsiveness of government and the nature of the problems. Survey data on one city are combined with census data differentiating neighborhood types. Voice is characteristic of suburban areas among high and low status whites; exit is characteristic of white urban areas. Among ghetto blacks—whose exit options are severely constrained—voice is most characteristic. Problems faced by blacks and whites living in the city are similar, while their adaptations are different.

The study uses the 2017 parliamentary elections results to analyses spatial patterns of votes in the city of Prague. A unique approach combining contextual and compositional data is introduced. Census data and data indicating the quality of life are reassigned to a shared entity – an address point, and analysed via automatic linear modelling. The model explained 69 % of spatial variance of votes share for the conservative TOP 09 party and the winning ANO 2011 movement, but only 19  % for the Pirate Party and the Mayors and Independence movement. Future research might focus on finding variables which would explain spatial variance of these parties’ vote shares. Abother possibility is the development of a methodology for studying votes spatiality within urban areas, in order to develop a robust theory.

AbstractUrban agriculture, a current trend in many US cities, is purported to bring enhanced food security, reduction of food waste, community building, open green space in cities and higher property values. However, the literature lacks an understanding of whether urban farming has extended beyond a compelling concept into the practice of farming in the city and peri-urban areas. The exact definition of an urban farm is challenging, since many urban farms have a primary mission of supporting social goals rather than providing food. Use of the USDA definition of farm omits many self-identified urban farms, but the most consistent measure of agriculture is the Census of Agriculture. Using census data, this paper finds that urban farms are smaller than the typical farm, and while the amount of urban and peri-urban farmland declined between 2002 and 2007, the total number of farms increased. Growth in farmland is positively related to land values, suggesting that increases in urban farmland are more likely to take place in population dense, land scarce areas. Spatial analysis of urban and peri-urban farms in the Northeast finds fewer clusters of farms in areas with high land costs. In the most populous Northeastern cities, the farms are more likely to be located in the peri-urban area than in the urban core. Urban farms in the Northeast were more likely to produce vegetables, eggs and goats. Significant levels of vegetable farm clusters were detected surrounding Providence, Boston and Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Areas, which are regions that had no significant level of clustering of total farms. Future analysis, incorporating data from the 2012 census, should provide insight into whether local policy changes have resulted in growth in urban farms and farmland.

Urban areas have average annual temperatures 2–3°C warmer than surrounding rural areas, with daily differences of 5–6°C common. A suggested reason for this temperature difference is the extensive use of concrete, asphalt, and other building materials in the urban environment. Vegetation can moderate these temperatures by intercepting incoming radiation. The influence of vegetation patterns on the magnitude of urban and micro-urban “heat islands” (UHI and MUHI, respectively) is compared for several cities including Houston, Austin, College Station, and Ft. Worth, Texas; Huntsville, Ala.; and Gainesville, Fla. Temperatures for all cities studied were greatest in the built-up areas and dropped off in suburban areas and adjacent rural areas. In Houston, surrounding rice fields were 3–5°C cooler than urban areas. Heavily built-up areas of Austin were 2–4°C warmer than parks and fields outside of the city. In all of the cities, large parks were typically 2–3°C cooler than adjacent built-up areas. Large shopping malls varied in nocturnal winter and summer temperature, with winter temperatures near door openings 2–3°C warmer, and summer daytime temperatures as much as 17°C cooler beneath trees. This effect seemed to persist at the microclimatic scale. Areas beneath evergreen trees and shrubs were warmer in the winter than surrounding grass covered areas. Video thermography indicated that the lower surfaces of limbs in deciduous trees were warmer than the upper surfaces. Overall, vegetation played a significant role, both at the local and microscale, in temperature moderation.

Several studies put in evidence the relevant role of cultivated lands in the urban areas. Using GIS methodologies in order to map agricultural areas near or within the town, it is possible to analyze their relationship with the urban area. In this study, the author used several different cartography sources, like digital cartography and orthophotos, in order to locate the urban domestic gardens and the terraced landscapes accurately. The study area is a medium city of a North-East Region of Italy, Trieste. Built on a hill morphology, it had a great and fast growth in the 19th and 20th centuries. These changes deeply transformed its landform, mainly reducing its surrounding cultivated lands. At present, the residual terraced landscapes are mainly placed in the north side of the city and they represent a kind of “cultural heritage.” On the contrary, the most important garden areas are located in the terrain embankments of the south suburban areas.

Taking Yangtze River delta(YRD) as the typical region, on basis of daily rainfall data from 1961 to 2006, this paper made contrastive analysis of annual and flood season precipitation between cities and suburbs in the study area with the method of statistical analysis, linear regression and R/S method. The results showed that 1) on the scale of region, for the area with relatively rapid development of urbanization, increasing trend of rainfall in urban areas was more than that of suburban areas, while for the areas with relatively slow development of urbanization, the gap was not obvious; 2) on the scale of city, for the city with relatively rapid development of urbanization, the increase amplitude of rainfall and urban-suburban gap were both obvious, for which with relatively slow development of urbanization, both were not obvious. This study can provide a reference for the analysis of urbanization.

Goal. To establish the dependence of the formation of unauthorized dumps of solid household waste with spatial features and socio-economic factors. Methods. Field, statistical data processing. Results. As a result of inventory of landfills of waste related to urban areas. Babai and s. Zatyshne 23 objects were discovered. Each object is analyzed in accordance with a number of criteria designed to optimize waste accumulation and disposal processes in suburban areas. On the basis of the analysis, all objects are classified and grouped into groups for a number of common features. The conducted analysis and classification of landfills enable to give a clear linking of objects to the spatial features within which they were formed. In addition, the analysis of the socio-economic component gives an idea of the context of the formation of landfills, the features of their further growth and morphological composition. On the basis of the analysis, four zones of risk of the formation and development of unauthorized waste landfills are allocated. Risk zones are allocated on the basis of the number of formed landfills, their area and the dynamics of growth. Conclusions dedicated areas of risk of the formation and growth of unauthorized dumps give the opportunity to build an effective system of environmental management and a program of sanitary clearing of territories. Binding landfill to spatial features and socio-economic factors allows for forecasting and subsequent control, which will be aimed at stopping the formation of new objects. Important in this approach is the concept of "individuality" of populated areas, since identified risk areas for one group of settlements, may be irrelevant for the next territorial cluster of management.

Urbanization is an inevitable trend of developing countries. Urbanization process is going on in Vietnam, especially in Ha Noicapital and Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City attracted the majority of the youth from provinces to come and work in industrial zones, export processing zones located in suburban areas (of the City). The population growth along with the increased demand for services did promote the expansion of urban land. Fast urban space expansion has posed a lot of challenges for young people especially in terms of lifestyle. Will these youth be susceptible to the bad side of society in the transition from rural to urban areas? The author has chosen to study the area of Binh Tan District in Ho Chi Minh City where high spontaneous urbanization takes place. Through field observations, the author observed life in the studied area which was Binh Tri Dong B Ward, Binh Tan District with the implementation of in-depth interviews for 45 subjects in three population groups under study such as: local people, new residents and immigrants. By method of interdisciplinary research in terms of sociology and geography, the author found out some challenges that the youth face in the process of suburban urbanization

Banjarmasin city faces almost the same problems as other big cities in the world, namely slum settlements. One of the factors in the formation of slum settlements in Banjarmasin city is urbanization. The population that continues to increase due to the flow of urbanization causes urban areas to have a very urgent problem, namely the provision of housing facilities. The high price of land in the city center and low-per capita income cause people to tend to look for settlements in suburban areas with inadequate environments and supporting facilities. This research aims to identify the conditions of slum settlements in Banjarmasin City and formulate policy priorities to improve the quality of slum settlements in Banjarmasin City. To answer all these objectives, an integrated settlement management system can be implemented. Comprehensive integration between office holders, stakeholders, and residents will produce a draft policy and slum management scenario. In addition, the policy for sustainable management of slum settlements in Banjarmasin City is also designed using the AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) approach. The slum settlements in Banjarmasin city are generally caused by geographical location, where most of them are river and swamp areas. Slums are getting worse because of the bad sanitation system. Ecological factor is the main priority factor in improving the quality of slum settlements. This is because if the slum area is able to maintain its ecology, it will be able to overcome disturbances or pressure, maintain or regain its function and shape. Based on AHP analysis, it is also known that the policy priority in improving the quality of slum settlements is by redevelopment. This effort is the rearrangement of part or all of the area for the purpose of managing the slum settlements in Banjarmasin city.

Recently, the number of published works devoted to the processes of synanthropization of fauna, is growing like an avalanche, which indicates the extreme urgency of this theme. In our view, the process of forming devices to coexist with human and the results of his life reflects the general tandency of the modern nature evolution. Urbanization is characteristic for such a specific group of animals like amphibians, the evidence of which are numerous literature data. Many researchers use this group to assess the bioindicative quality of the environment. For this aim a variety of indicators are used: from the cellular level of life of organization up to the species composition of the group in different territories. At the same time, the interpretation of the results is not always comparable for different areas and often have significantly different interpretations by experts. Urban environment, primarily due to the contamination is extremely aggressive to amphibians. As a consequence, the urban populations of amphibians may be a change in the demographic structure, affecting the reproductive ability of the population, the disappearance of the most sensitive species or individuals, resizing animals, the appearance of abnormalities in the development, etc. At the same time play an important amphibians in the ecosystems of cities, and some species in these conditions even feel relatively comfortable. Therefore, it is interesting to understand the mechanisms of self-sustaining populations of amphibians in urban environments. To assess the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on the development of amphibian populations were used cognitive modeling using the program Vensim PLE. Cognitive map of the model for urban and suburban habitat conditions were the same. The differences concerned the strength of connections between individual factors (migration, fertility, pollution) and their orientation. In general, factors like pollution, parasites, predators had negative impact on the population, reducing its number. The birth rate, food and migration contributed to raising number of individuals. Some of the factors affected on the strength to of each other as well: the majority of the factors affected the structure of the population, had an influence on the fertility. Thanks to it the model reflects the additive effect of complex of factors on the subsequent status of the population. Proposed and analyzed four scenarios differing strength and duration of exposure. In the first scenario, a one-time contamination occurs and not subsequently repeated. The second and third scenario assumes half board contamination, 1 year (2 scenario) and two years (scenario 3). In the fourth scenario, the pollution affected the population of amphibians constantly. In accordance with the results of simulation, much weaker than the natural populations respond to pollution - have them as an intensive population growth and its disappearance at constant pollution is slow. Changes to other parameters of the model showed that this pollution is the decisive factor -only the constant action leads to a lethal outcome for the populations. All other components of the model have a corrective effect on the population dynamics, without changing its underlying trand. In urban areas due to the heavy impact of pollution maintaining the population is only possible thanks to the migration process – the constant replenishment of diminishing micropopulations of natural reserves. This confirms the assumption that the form of existence metapopulations lake frog in the city. In order to maintain the number of amphibians in urban areas at a high level it is necessary to maintain existing migration routes and the creation of new ones. Insular nature of the placement of suitable habitats in urban areas causes the metapopulation structure of the types of urbanists. Therefore, the process of urbanization is much easier for those species whicht are capable of migration in conditions of city. In the initial stages of settling the city micropopulationis formed by selective mortality of the most susceptible individuals to adverse effects. In future, maintaining the categories of individuals is provided mainly due to migration processes metapopulisation form of the species of existence is supported). It should be noted that the changes in the previous levels are always saved in future. In the case of reorganizations of individuals we of morphology can assume the existence of extremely adverse environmental conditions that threaten the extinction of the micropopulations.

(21,21%). The widespread use of stray animals in urban areas carries with it the potential threat of the spread of zooanthroponotic diseases, one of which is demodicosis. It is impossible to develop measures aimed at combating the disease and its prevention without analyzing the data on the characteristics of the occurrence and spread of invasion among the entire population of susceptible animals. Therefore, the purpose of our work was to study the distribution of demodicosis among street dogs and cats in the city of Tyumen. The objectives of the study included the study of the spread of demodicosis and its clinical manifestation among stray dogs and cats in the conditions of the city of Tyumen and the determination of the seasonal dynamics of the disease. Demodectic invasion is common among stray cats and dogs. Most often, demodicosis occurs in dogs, with extensive invasion from 0.65 to 0.72%. Demodecosis in stray dogs was recorded throughout the year, but 54.6% of sick dogs were reported in April and May. The majority of patients with demodicosis are young dogs between the ages of 1.5 months and 2 years old - 75.76%, animals older than two years suffer less from demodicosis, only 24.24%. Generalization of demodicosis was recorded in 21 dogs (63.64%), and localized foci in 12 dogs (36.36%). The most common form of demodicosis in stray dogs is pustular or pyodemodecosis. This form of the disease was observed in 16 dogs (48.49%), scaly form, was observed in 10 dogs (30.30%), and mixed in 7 dogs (21.21%).
