Strength Testing Archaeological Ceramics: A New Perspective

The measurement of ceramic strength is an important source of evidence for assessing any pottery technology. However, the adoption of strength testing within comprehensive ceramic analyses in archaeology has been hindered by the absence of a reliable format for testing archaeological specimens. This paper presents results of research undertaken to develop the ball-on-three-ball test, which measures the tensile strength of archaeological, ethnographic, and experimental ceramics in biaxial flexure. Laboratory experiments demonstrate that the test produces reliable and accurate results largely unaffected by the irregularities of sherd-shaped specimens. In an example from the prehistoric Southwest, strength tests are used to investigate technological change in the Cibola White Ware sequence and the role of strength in the formation of archaeological assemblages. It is suggested that the development of a versatile, dependable technique can help to move strength testing out of experimental laboratories and into mainstream ceramic analyses.

ABSTRACT Aim The current study has been chosen to evaluate the efficacy of calcium hypochlorite as a disinfecting additive for the gypsum products and its effect on compressive and tensile strength of the set material. It is hypothesized that, the addition of calcium hypochlorite to type V dental stone in sufficient quantity to disinfect the material would have no deleterious effect on compressive or tensile strength. Materials and methods Total of 160 samples made up of type V dental stone were divided broadly into two groups of 80 samples each for the sake of compressive and tensile strength testing in dry and wet conditions: Out of each group, 10 samples without addition of any disinfectant (0% calcium hypochlorite) was compared with other group of 30 samples after adding disinfectant, i.e. each subgroup containing 10 samples each (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% calcium hypochlorite). Conclusion Within limitations of this in vitro study it is assumed to prepare type V dental stone that contains a disinfectant, has adequate compressive strength and tensile strength, and can significantly act against a resistant species like Bacillus subtilis. Clinical significance When calcium hypochlorite was added to dental stone, extra mixing water was required to produce a material of nearly same pouring consistency. The samples, which were put to microbiological tests, showed effective action of disinfectant on Bacillus subtilis. No deleterious effect on compressive or tensile strength could be found after putting the selected samples with calcium hypochlorite. The contribution contains results of bonded joints strength tests. The tests were carried out according to the modified standard ČSN EN 1465 (66 8510):2009. The spruce three-ply wood of 4 mm thickness was used for bonding according to ČSN EN 636 (49 2419):2013. The test samples of 100 × 25 mm size were cut out from a semi-product of 2,440 × 1,220 mm size in the direction of its longer side (angle 0°), in the oblique direction (angle 45°) and in the direction of its shorter side (crosswise – angle 90°). The bonding was carried out using eight different domestic as well as foreign adhesives according to the technology prescribed by the producer. All used adhesives were designated for wood bonding. At the bonding the consumption of the adhesive was determined. After curing, the bonded assemblies were loaded using a universal tensile-strength testing machine up to the rupture. The rupture force and the rupture type were registered. Finally, the technical-economical evaluation of the experiments was carried out.

Design of a snap connector to connect panel elements. The aim of this study was to design, manufacture and verify the tensile strength of a prototype snap connector to be used to connect panel elements. Firstly, analyses were conducted on solutions of commercially available designs for connectors invisible from the cabinet’s outside and those with minimized visibility. While searching for the best concept of connector design, three proposals were prepared, of which – after thorough analysis of design – one concept was selected. In the next step, the adopted solution was improved so that the connector met the previously formulated design requirements. In the course of further analyses, the causes and effects of failure were verified in order to limit or eliminate potential defects. In the next stage of the study, numerical calculations were conducted for the nut and the connector, concerning tensile strength, using the Autodesk Simulation Multiphysics program. After a prototype connector was manufactured, tensile strength tests were conducted on the connector using a strength testing machine. Experiments verified the correctness of the developed design in terms of geometry and the physico-mechanical properties of materials of individual elements, and resulted in possible changes proposed in the design of the final connector product.

Based on the construal level theory (CLT), this study discusses the effects of congruence between image proximity and product type on advertising attitude and product attitude from the perspective of spatial distance and investigates the mediating role of mental imagery. Data are collected using two laboratory experiments and one online experiment. A two-way ANOVA is used to test the interaction between image proximity and product type, and a bootstrap analysis is used to test the mediating role of mental imagery. The result shows that: (1) For search products, compared with full-length shots, the close-up shots of environmental information can enable consumers to generate more positive advertising attitude and product attitude. For experience products, the full-length shots of environmental information can enable consumers to generate more positive advertising attitude and product attitude than the close-up shots. (2) The congruence effect of image proximity and product type has an impact on advertising attitude and product attitude through mental imagery. This research uses different kinds of image proximity to express environmental information about green products and tries to interpret the effectiveness of green advertisements from a new perspective.

The article presents results of strength tests of bismuth telluride prismatic samples obtained by growing crystals. These crystals have semiconductor properties and are used in the heat machines, the run-ability of which largely depends on the strength of crystals. Data available in the literature are significantly different from each other. It has been shown that, the most consistent strength tests results are obtained in case of bend testing. The measurement results of the elasticity modulus and tensile strength are given. For tests, an INSTRON testing machine with maximum direct stress of the 1000 H was used.

Rapid maxillary expansion is defined as the release of medio-palatine suture using an orthopedic forces. The role of this procedure is to expand  the upper jaw in order to achieve the  broadening of the upper arch. This study was initiated to quantify the effects of disjunction and post- treatment bone changes, after an adequate contention which lasted for three weeks. This study  is  carried on laboratory animals (common breed rabbit) to determine tensile strength and the elasticity modulus of  biological materials  used in orthdodontics. The results of the study are consistent with those reported in the literature reference.

Multisensory interactions in perception are pervasive and fundamental, as we have documented throughout this book. In this final chapter, we propose that contemporary work on multisensory processing is a paradigm shift in perception science, calling for a radical reconsideration of empirical and theoretical questions within an entirely new perspective. In making our case, we emphasize that multisensory perception is the norm, not the exception, and we remark that multisensory interactions can occur early in sensory processing. We reiterate the key notions that multisensory interactions come in different kinds and that principles of multisensory processing must be considered when tackling multisensory daily-life problems. We discuss the role of unisensory processing in a multisensory world, and we conclude by suggesting future directions for the multisensory field.


Concepts stand at the centre of human cognition. We use concepts in categorizing objects and events in the world, in reasoning and action, and in social interaction. It is therefore not surprising that the study of concepts constitutes a central area of research in philosophy and psychology. Since the 1970s, psychologists have carried out intriguing experiments testing the role of concepts in categorizing and reasoning, and have found a great deal of variation in categorization behaviour across individuals and cultures. During the same period, philosophers of language and mind did important work on the semantic properties of concepts, and on how concepts are related to linguistic meaning and linguistic communication. An important motivation behind this was the idea that concepts must be shared, across individuals and cultures. However, there was little interaction between these two research programs until recently. With the dawn of experimental philosophy, the proposal that the experimental data from psychology lacks relevance to semantics is increasingly difficult to defend. Moreover, in the last decade, philosophers have approached questions about the tension between conceptual variation and shared concepts in communication from a new perspective: that of ameliorating concepts for theoretical or for social and political purposes. The volume brings together leading psychologists and philosophers working on concepts who come from these different research traditions.
