ABSTRACT This paper advocates for a drastic transformation of government accountability and reporting. With the availability of Big Data and the advancement of technologies, the existing government reporting schema fails to meet the public's increasing demand for accountability. We discuss the need for the government to reform its reporting schema and prescribe potential paths toward a data-driven, analytics-based, real-time, and proactive reporting paradigm. We conceptualize an app-based continuous monitoring and reporting environment that is real-time, structured, future-oriented, and that incorporates non-financial information like ESG and infrastructure. This reformed reporting paradigm highlights the expected role of government reporting: to provide accountability to the public.

Malaysia is reported to be an “elderly’”country by 2030. Senior citizens are “jewels in experience”, wherefore their welfare rights should be protected under the law or by the public in general. Therefore, this paper discusses the rights of senior citizens to be protected by examining the provisions of the Destitute Persons Act 1977. The study was carried out through library research. Apart from analysing the provisions of the Destitute Persons 1977 Act, reported cases of underprivileged and ill senior citizens in Malaysia were also taken into view. In addition, this article also discusses the role of government agencies in helping senior citizens in need of protection and care, in the form of physical or financial assistance. Finally, this article discusses the actions and recommendations of the government which seeks to draw up an Act specifically aimed at protecting senior citizen welfare rights as a whole.

Incessant corporate failures have led to increasing governmental participation in the governance of the modern corporation. In this conceptual paper, we examine and propose that the role of government in the UK corporate governance system is four fold, namely: to enhance competitive advantage; to compensate for the failure of self-regulation; to prevent corporate scandals and restore investors’ confidence; and owing to significant public pressures and associated political undertones, to suggest to the public the government is still an effective overseer in the existing prominence of self-regulation. We contribute to the literature on corporate governance, politics, policy making and regulatory institutions, whilst raising important issues that are of practice and policy relevance.

The development policy in the reformation era gives priority to the paradigm of human development that puts people as the development actors and places local economy as a vehicle for community welfare. However, the government policy as stated in the national budget precisely contradicts with the role of government that should create the community welfare. This study uses the qualitative approach by using historical and verstehen methods. The management of the national budget shows the existence of the government's role in regulating the sources of general revenue and expenditure budget. The practices of the state financial management used for development purposes to create the public welfare have been conducted since the time of Prophet Muhammad. The management of the national budget in the reformation era uses performance-based budget structure that aims to improve the performance of government with good governance that requires the effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, and accountabilicy in its management. However, the abuse of the budget in the form of corruption still occurs in the management of this national budget. Key words: National Budget, Budget-Politics, Corruption, Islamic Economy.

What is the role of a government attorney who represents a government agency on judicial review? Most academic literature in the United States (US) advocates the ‘hired gun’ model in which the role of the government lawyer is no different from that of a lawyer who represents a private client (although some academics and government lawyers disagree). The prevailing view in Israel is that government lawyers are ‘ministers of justice’, who owe a primary obligation to the public interest rather than to the client agency. This difference is attributable both to fundamental differences in legal culture between the US and Israel as well as to unique features of the Israeli system of judicial review.

This chapter discusses the development and financing for stadiums by the teams in the largest American professional sports leagues, including MLB, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, and MLS, and the role of government in that process. With the exception of antitrust issues, there may be no aspect of American sports in which the government is as involved as the construction and financing of the stadiums in which the games are played. Stadium development, initially a private matter, entered the public interest because of the dramatic growth in construction costs coupled with the appearance of economic and societal benefits to a region that hosts a major league team. It will come as no surprise that venue projects are challenging and often controversial. This chapter analyzes how teams, leagues, and government entities negotiate for venue development projects, touching on the legal, practical, and political challenges that have emerged over the years.
