SUMMARY Background Desensitizing agents are used, almost as routine practice, in many adhesive restorative procedures. There is still debate as to their effect in dentin bonding, particularly with self-etching adhesives. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different desensitizing agents on the bond strength of mild and strong self-etching adhesive systems to dentin. Materials and Methods One hundred twenty recently extracted, noncarious human molars were used to obtain superficial dentin substrate for bonding. No desensitizer was used in the control groups. The experimental groups were pretreated with Gluma Desensitizer, MicroPrime B, and Dentin Desensitizer immediately prior to bonding with self-etching adhesives Optibond XTR, Xeno IV, and iBond. A bonding jig was used to fabricate composite cylinders, which were stored for either 24 hours or three months, after which the shear bond strength (SBS) was evaluated using a notched-edge testing device at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Failure mode distribution was also evaluated at 24 hours and three months. A two-way analysis of variance, Tukey test, and Student t-test, with a significance level of p<0.05, were used for data analysis. Results At 24 hours, there was no significant difference in SBS when the same adhesive was used with any of the experimental desensitizing agents compared with the control group without desensitizer. However, at three months, Dentin Desensitizer bonded with Optibond XTR demonstrated significantly lower SBS (p<0.001), while Gluma bonded with iBond showed significantly higher SBS values (p=0.034) relative to their corresponding control group. Only MicroPrime B bonded with Xeno IV and iBond with no desensitizer demonstrated a significant reduction in SBS after three months (p=0.034 and p=0.002, respectively). The most prevalent type of failure was adhesive. Conclusion Desensitizing agents can be used in combination with self-etching adhesives to control hypersensitivity without adversely affecting their bond strength to dentin.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate a protocol for bonding metallic brackets after bleaching with hydrogen peroxide (HP). Methods: 60 extracted maxillary premolar were randomly divided into an unbleached control group and two groups bleached with a solution of 35% hydrogen peroxide prior to bonding. The teeth in one of the treated groups were bonded immediately after bleaching; while the other group was treated with 10% sodium ascorbate immediately after bleaching and before bonding. The teeth in all groups were stored in an artificial saliva solution for 7 days after bonding. The shear bond strength data was measured in megapascals (MPa) and the fail attempts were verified. The significance level was established at p< 0.05. Results: The unbleached group, in which brackets were bonded to untreated enamel, had the highest bond strength values (11.0 ± 5.7MPa) in comparison to the bleached group (7.14 ± 40MPa), in which brackets were bonded to recently bleached enamel. Slightly improved bond strength was observed in the antioxidant group (8.13 ± 5.4MPa), in which the teeth were bleached and then the antioxidant was applied to the teeth before bonding. Unbleached and bleached groups showed statistically significant difference for shear bond strength (p=0.03) and load strength (p=0.03); no significant differences were noted between unbleached and antioxidant groups (p=0.52). Conclusion: The antioxidant treatment applied immediately after bleaching was effective in reversing the reduction in shear bond strength of brackets after tooth bleaching.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of saliva contamination (SCT) and re-etching time (RET) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of the Fluroshield sealant. Forty-five extracted third molars were sectioned and flattened until reach an enamel surface area. Then, all samples were etched for 30 sec with 35% phosphoric acid and then they were distributed into 9 groups (n=10) according to SCT and RET (seconds), respectively: G1- control (no SCT and no RET); G2- 30s and 0s; G3- 60s and 0s; G4-30s and 2s; G5- 30s and 5s; G6- 30s and 15s; G7-60s and 2s; G8- 60s and 5s; G9- 60s and 15s. The sealant was applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. The samples were stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 72h and subjected to the SBS test. The results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). However, it could be noticed that: 1- the longer the SCT, the lower the SBS values; 2 - the longer the RET, the higher the SBS values. It could be concluded that there was a tendency to the shortest SCT (30s) associated to the longest RET (5 and 15s) to reach similar SBS values for the control group.

ABSTRACT Objective The purpose of the current in-vivo study was to assess the effect of using 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) mouth rinse, before bonding, on shear bond strength of polycarbonate brackets bonded with composite adhesive. Subjects and methods Eighteen orthodontic patients with a mean age 21.41 ± 1.2 years, who were scheduled to have 2 or more first premolars extracted, were included in this study. Patients were referred for an oral prophylaxis program which included, in part, the use of a mouth rinse. Patients were divided into 2 groups, a test group of 9 patients who used 0.12% CHX gluconate mouth rinse twice daily and a control group of 9 patients who used a mouth rinse without CHX, but with same color. After 1 week, polycarbonate brackets were bonded to first premolars with Transbond XT composite adhesive. Premolars were extracted after 28 days and tested for shear bond strength on a universal testing machine. Student's t-test was used to compare shear bond strengths of both groups. Results No statistically significant difference was found in bond strengths’ values between both groups. The test group (with CHX) has mean shear bond strength of 14.21 ± 2.42 MPa whereas the control group (without CHX) revealed a mean strength of 14.52 ± 2.31 MPa. Conclusion The use of 0.12% CHX mouth rinse, for one week before bonding, did not affect the shear bond strength of polycarbonate brackets bonded with Transbond composite. ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the neutralizer effect of antioxidant agents on the bond strength of bleached enamel. Materials and Methods: Sixty enamel slabs were prepared from 60 freshly extracted maxillary central incisors and were divided into six groups. The negative control group received no bleaching treatment and the other groups were bleached with 35% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence Quick; Ultradent, South Jordan, USA). In Group II, composite was built immediately after bleaching and cured without any antioxidants. In Group III, bleached specimens received composite build ups delayed by 1 week. In Groups IV, V, and VI bleached specimens received applications of superoxide dismutase (SOD), sodium ascorbate (SA), and tocopherol solutions, respectively, for 10 min. Following composite bonding, the micro shear bond strength (μSBS) was measured at a speed of 1 mm/min in universal testing machine. Statistical Analysis Used: The μSBS values of all the groups were analyzed using the analysis of variance followed by Tukey honestly significant difference post-hoc test. Results: Bonding of composites to unbleached group (Group I) exhibited the highest mean SBS values and among the antioxidant-treated groups, the highest SBS values were seen with SOD (Group IV) treated samples (23.0040 ± 4.30565 MPa). Conclusions: Application of SA, alpha-tocopherol, and SOD can effectively reverse the bond strength with bleached enamel. SOD gave a comparatively more promising reversal of bond strength than SA and alpha-tocopherol, and deserves further studies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in vitro, the shear bond strength presented by three brands of polycrystalline ceramic brackets and one brand of metallic bracket; verify the adhesive remnant index (ARI) after the tests, and analyze, through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the enamel surface topography after debonding, detecting the release of mineral particles. METHODS: Sixty bovine lower incisors were used. Three ceramic brackets (Allure(r), InVu(r), and Clarity(r)) and one metallic bracket (Geneus(r)) were bonded with Transbond XT(r). Kruskal-Wallis's test (significance level set at 5%) was applied to the results of share bond and ARI. Mann Whitney's test was performed to compare the pairs of brackets in relation to their ARI. Brown-Forsythe's test (significance level set at 5%) was applied to the results of enamel chemical composition. Comparisons between groups were made with Games-Howell's and the Post-hoc tests. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was observed in relation to the shear bond strength loads. Clarity(r) brackets were the most affected in relation to the surface topography and to the release of mineral particles of enamel (calcium ions). CONCLUSION: With regard to the ARI, there was a prevalence of score 4 (40.4%). As for enamel surface topography, the Geneus(r) bracket was the only one which did not show superficial tissue loss. The InVu(r) and Clarity(r) ones showed cohesive fractures in 33.3% and the Allure(r) in 50%, the latter being the one that presented most fractures during removal.

Abstract Objective: To test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the shear bond strength of brackets bonded to provisional crown materials (PCMs) using two adhesive agents. Materials and Methods: Four PCMs were tested: Integrity, Jet, Protemp, and Snap. Forty cylindrical specimens of 10 mm diameter × 5 mm were prepared for each PCM. Ten specimens from each group were bonded to one of the two brackets, Clarity or Victory, using one of the two adhesives, Fuji Ortho LC or Ortho Bracket Adhesive. The brackets were debonded in shear at a cross-head speed of 5 mm/min, and the shear bond strength (SBS) was calculated. The type of failure was visually determined. The numeric data were analyzed using three-way analysis of variance and Tukey multiple range test at α = .05. Results: The mean SBSs ranged from 2.81 MPa to 9.65 MPa. There was a significant difference between Snap and the other three materials (P &lt; .0001). There was no significant difference between the two brackets or the two adhesives (P &gt; .05). The bond failure for all the specimens was of the adhesive type between the PCM and the adhesive resin. Conclusions: The PCM Snap yielded a significantly lower mean SBS value compared to the other three materials. No significant differences were found between the brackets or the adhesives. The bond failure was of the adhesive type.

The objective of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the shear bond strength of conventional and modified orthodontic tubes bonded to the surface of dry and saliva-contaminated enamel. The sample consisted of 40 human teeth, which were randomly divided into four groups according to attachment base and presence or absence of saliva contamination as follows: Group CB, conventional orthodontic tubes without salivary contamination; Group CB-S, conventional orthodontic tubes with salivary contamination; Groups BM, orthodontic tubes modified by welding a metal mesh to their base without salivary contamination; and Group BM-S, modified orthodontic tubes with salivary contamination. Shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine and analysis of the adhesive remnant index (ARI) by optical microscopy. Two-way ANOVA was used, followed by Tukey’s test at a statistical significance level of 5%. The ARI results were analysed descriptively. There was statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the shear bond strength values, with conventional tubes presenting significantly higher values (P < 0.05). In addition, the presence of salivary contamination interfered negatively with the behaviour of conventional tubes only (P < 0.05). Shear bond strength was not improved by increasing the area of the orthodontic tubes. Moreover, salivary contamination influenced negatively the SBS values, but only when conventional tubes were used.

One of the problems that often occurred during orthodontic treatment is bracket failure. This is usually the result either of the patient’s accidentally, applying inappropriate forces to the bracket or of a poor bonding technique. Thus, a significant number of teeth have to be rebonded in an orthodontic practice. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro initial repeated shear bond strength of the three adhesive systems at two and five minutes after placement of a bracket. Materials and Methods: The three bonding agent adhesives are System1+, Rely-a-bond, Unite. Two hundred and forty human premolar teeth were divided into two groups, a control and an experimental group. Each group was further divided into three subgroups for bonding brackets with the three different adhesives. Only the teeth in the experimental group were sequentially bonded and debonded two times with the same adhesive. The teeth in control and experimental groups were tested for shear bond strength (at two and five minutes after the bracket was bonded) with an Instron testing machine. Results: The studies were found that : (1) there were differences between the shear bond strength of each adhesive in the control and experimental group. Unite had the highest shear bond strength followed by Rely-a-bond and System1+ at two minutes and five minutes, (2) the experiment group ( rebonded brackets) had higher shear bond strength than control group and Unite had in significant difference (p<0.05) of initial repeated bond strength with System1+ and Rely-a-bond at two minutes and five minutes and (3) there were mostly significant difference (p<0.05) between repeated shear bond strength at two minutes and repeated shear bond strength at five minutes. Conclusion: There were significant difference of the initial repeated shear bond strength of each adhesive. The orthodontists should be aware of applying force for tooth movement into the repeated bonding brackets.

Despite the expanded application for zirconia in restoration dentistry, there is less clear recommendation in the literature regarding the relation between zirconia surface roughness and its shear bond strength to resin cements. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of surface roughness of Cercon zirconia on its shear bond strength to resin cements. 66 Zirconia rectangular specimens (10 mm×10 mm×3 mm) were prepared from Cercon zirconia blocks, finished using a diamond rotary cutting instrument, sintered, and then assigned into 6 groups. The specimens in the first group without polishing were used as control. Other groups were polished against 120#, 240#, 360#, 500# and 600# sand paper after sintered, respectively. Ceramic surface were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Surface profilometer. 10 samples of each group were bonded with Variolink N resin cements respectively and submitted to shear bond strength test. Shear bond strength was measured and statistically analyzed. The results showed that the population means of 6 groups of samples were not equal. There was no significant difference between control group and 600# sand paper treated group, 500#, 360# and 240# sand paper treated groups (P>0.05), but a significant difference among the other groups (P<0.05). Findings of this study revealed that the shear bond strength might be raised by increasing the surface roughness of Cercon zirconia. Therefore, the surface roughness of Cercon zirconia has an effect on the shear bond strength, but is not the determining factor in clinical use.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of different deproteinizing agents on shear bond strength of composite to primary teeth enamel. Study Design: Forty sound primary molars divided in 4 groups of 10 teeth each. In control group 1, enamel was etched for 60 seconds with 37% phosphoric acid and rinsed with water. Group 2: after acid etching deproteinizing agent 5 % sodium hypochlorite was applied for 60 seconds and rinsed. Group 3: after acid etching deproteinizing agent papain gel was applied for 60 seconds and rinsed. Group 4: after acid etching deproteinizing agent bromelain gel applied for 60 seconds and rinsed. Following this, bonding agent was applied to treated enamel surface and composite resin disc were build. Samples were then tested for shear bond strength using Universal Testing Machine. Results: Mean SBS was highest for group 4 and lowest for group 1. No statistically significant difference (p value &gt;0.05) was found between all the four groups. Conclusion: Among deproteinizing agents, deproteinization when carried out with bromelain gel and sodium hypochlorite showed effective bond strength as compared to papain.
