Seven Ways to Inspire Innovation in the Health Technology Industry

Abstract This article explores ways in which technological innovation can be bolstered in organizations that operate in the health technology industry. We present seven interventions at the team level (employee empowerment, servant leadership, hiring innovators, and scheduling time for innovation) and organizational level (intrapreneurship, flat management, and allowing for failure) that organizations can use to encourage and inspire innovation among employees. Given the increasingly dynamic nature of work within the health technology fields, in terms of both manufacturing processes and clinical developments, creating a culture of innovation and creativity and emboldening employees to regularly engage in such behaviors within these workplaces are critical.

Purpose Scrum is a development methodology that has been rapidly gaining popularity over the last decade particularly for software development teams. The Scrum master is sometimes viewed as a servant leader of the Scrum team. The purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent Scrum masters actually make use of servant leadership and how this impacts on the team’s effectiveness via mediating processes. Design/methodology/approach The research followed a quantitative approach. An online questionnaire was prepared and completed by 71 Scrum team members (excluding Scrum masters) and 22 Scrum masters in more than ten organizations based in Western Cape, South Africa. Findings Scrum masters in this sample extensively used the servant leadership approach, but those who are also appointed as formal team leaders are seen to be considerably better servant leaders by team members. There is a moderately strong correlation between servant leadership of the Scrum master and team effectiveness. It was found that high levels of psychological safety do not necessarily translate into team performance. Research limitations/implications Research was only performed at the unit level of analysis and not the team or organizational level. This was a cross-sectional study and variations over time were not considered. Practical implications The results confirm the importance of servant leadership skills when identifying and developing Scrum masters, appointing the formal team leader role in Scrum teams and implementing Scrum practices effectively. Originality/value As could be established, this is the first time that the role of servant leadership in Scrum teams was formally investigated.

Abstract There is great optimism that artificial intelligence (AI), as it disrupts the medical world, will provide considerable improvements in all areas of health care, from diagnosis to treatment. In addition, there is considerable evidence that AI algorithms have surpassed human performance in various tasks, such as analyzing medical images, as well as correlating symptoms and biomarkers with the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. However, the mismatch between the performance of AI-based software and its clinical usefulness is still a major obstacle to its widespread acceptance and use by the medical community. In this article, three fundamental concepts observed in the health technology industry are highlighted as possible causative factors for this gap and might serve as a starting point for further evaluation of the structure of AI companies and of the status quo.

This chapter presents the relationship and impact of employee empowerment on organizational trust. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between employee empowerment and organizational trust in the IT industry. This study examines the difference between the empowerment level and organizational level of male and female employees. The questionnaire employed in this study consisted of empowerment by A. K. Mishra and G. M. Spreitzer and organizational trust variables by P. Mishra. The sample for the study consisted of 475 IT professionals from five IT organizations. Simple random sampling was used as a sampling technique, and this study was an ex-post in nature. Data were analyzed using t-test, correlation, and multiple regression. The result revealed that employee empowerment had a positive and significant impact on organizational trust. There is no significant difference in the empowerment of IT industry employees. It means that both male and female employees were equally empowered in their jobs. Male employees are more trust in their jobs as compared to female employees.

A comprehensive understanding of the antecedent factors, and the impact of servant leadership and also about the education theories used as a perspective are so essential for leaders and researchers. However, there is not enough information about it. This paper was made to fill this gap by using the literature review approach. It was done to 71 Scopus indexed articles, which were published in the 2015 – 2020. There are several results of the review, those are: (1) servant leadership is influenced by the emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, motivation to serve, non-calculative as one dimension of motivation-to-lead, and mindfulness; (2) servant leadership have an impact on 38 dependent variables in individual level and 16 dependent variables in the organizational level both directly and indirectly; (3) there are 31 theories, which are used as a researcher's perspective, and two between them, which are mostly used are the social exchange theory and social learning theory. The result of this research gives contribution, which enriches the theoretical scope of servant leadership. This academic contribution is for sure will be so beneficial for leaders who commit to developing the best potential owned by their staff for a better organization. The result of this research will also be essential for future researchers because it shows a state of the art and research gap about servant leadership.

Purpose The scant literature on MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) tourists’ gambling behavior calls for a need to explore how their decision to gamble (hereafter, “gambling decision”) may unfold. Consequently, several questions germane to the inter-relationships among event tourists’ characteristics, casinos attributes, and gambling behaviors remain largely unaddressed. This paper aims to address the void in the literature by investigating event participants’ gambling decision. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected based on two samples, and a multilevel design was used to test the proposed model. Demographic and event-related participant characteristics were examined as antecedents of gambling decision at the individual level. Event goers’ accommodation characteristics such as brand equity and type of hotel were explored as cross-level effects on the individual-level factors and relationships. Findings Results of the study illustrate a joint influence – in terms of both direct and moderating effects – of individual-level and organizational-level characteristics on gambling decision. In particular, brand equity moderates the relationships leading from demographic and event-related characteristics to gambling decision. Practical implications The inter-relationships among events, accommodations and casinos present an opportunity for hospitality practitioners to better integrate these three services in a more coherent experiential offering for the ever-demanding MICE attendees. Findings also help practitioners to justify their targeting strategy. Originality/value The proposed framework presents the dynamic nature of the hospitality industry in which the event, hotel and casino sectors are interdependent, a picture hitherto prevented by the single-level oriented nature of gambling and hospitality research which largely focuses on the individual perspective. Given the dynamic nature of the hospitality industry, the findings elucidate a complex interdependency of customer needs.

However, to ensure that new advances are incorporated equitably without diverting scarce resources from essential services and underserved populations, European institutions must forge a common policy that balances investments with returns and competition with coordination.

The Health Technology Assessment (HTA), was created to provide an operational response to the gap between the limited resources of the NHS, the increasingly differentiated demand for health and rapid technological innovation. According to AGENAS it is "a multidisciplinary approach for the analysis of the medical-clinical, social, organizational, economic, ethical and legal implications of a health technology". The objective of HTA is to assess the effects of technology, as well as the consequences that the introduction or exclusion of an intervention may have for the NHS, the economy and society".

Health is an information rich and complex environment, which makes it essential to implement interoperability in different health organizations and the consequent homogeneity among Health Information Systems (HIS). The Agency for the Integration, Dissemination and Archiving of Medical and Clinical Information (AIDA) is a consistent agent monitoring platform capable of guaranteeing the automation of information as well as the interoperability and integration of HIS. This platform was designed as a solution to the information islands that are commonly found in hospital systems, and it is currently being used in several hospitals throughout Portugal. However, like any technological innovation, the solution requires a constant health technology assessment (HTA) to ensure the absence of obsolescence and a continued efficiency and security of the platform. Hence, this article focuses on the relevance and the need for vigilance, culminating in the restructuring of certain intelligent agents that make up the AIDA platform.

This study investigates a method to improve small- and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs’) business performance and organizational effectiveness for sustainable growth. This study hypothesizes that technological innovation capabilities have a positive impact on business performance and organizational effectiveness and that metacognition at the organizational level has a mediating role in the relationship. To verify the relationship, this study conducts an empirical analysis using a survey questionnaire. The findings are as follows. First, technological innovation capability has a positive effect on both business performance and organizational effectiveness. Second, organizational metacognition has a partial mediating effect on the effect of technological innovation capability on business performance and organizational effectiveness. The results suggest that chief executive officer (CEO) and middle managers contemplate the methodology of metacognition at the organizational level and that they should focus more on enhancing business performance by developing technological innovation capability and organizational metacognition.
