The experiment was conducted to perceive the effect of fungicidal seed treatment on seed borne diseases of green gram on susceptible cv. GM-3 with nine different fungicides. Results revealed that dry seed treatment with either mix formulation of carbendazim + mancozeb or thiophanate methyl or carbendazim @ 2.5 g kg-1 seeds is very effective in field to control Macrophomina leaf blight, Alternaria leaf spot and Anthracnose diseases. Two years pooled data indicated that PDI of Macrophomina leaf bilght was significantly lower in dry seed treatment with carbendazim + mancozeb (0.99%, 12.90%) which was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (1.54%, 13.80%) followed by carbendazim (0.99%, 14.06%) at 35 and 65 DAS, respectively. Two years pooled data of Alternaria leaf spot indicated that the PDI of was significantly lower in dry seed treatment with carbendazim + mancozeb (2.64%, 11.15%) which was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (2.74%, 11.30%) followed by carbendazim (2.84%, 11.37%) at 35 and 65 DAS. Two years pooled data of Anthracnose disease indicated that the PDI of Anthracnose was significantly lower in dry seed treatment with carbendazim + mancozeb (0.81%, 6.71%).

The experiment was conducted to perceive the effect of fungicidal seed treatment on growth and yield parameters of green gram cv. GM-3 with nine different fungicides. The results revealed that dry seed treatment with either mix formulation of carbendazim+mancozeb or thiophanate methyl or carbendazim @ 2.5 g kg-1 seeds is very effective in field to get maximum seed germination, better plant growth, root growth, yield parameters and yield. Seed germination was maximum in dry seed treatment with carbendazim + mancozeb (83.85%) which was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (83.58%), carbendazim (82.53%) and captan (80.77%). Plant height was maximum in dry seed treatment in mixed formulation carbendazim+mancozeb (41.53 cm) which was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (39.91 cm), carbendazim (39.67 cm) and captan (37.00 cm). Average numbers of pods plant-1 were maximum in dry seed treatment with carbendazim+mancozeb (12.33) which was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (12.17), carbendazim (11.90), captan (11.85), thiram (11.58) and difenconazole (11.09). Average numbers of seeds pod-1 was maximum in dry seed treatment with carbendazim+mancozeb (7.58) which was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (7.48), carbendazim (7.31), captan (7.28) and thiram (7.12). The pooled data of two years indicated that grain yield was significantly higher in dry seed treatment with carbendazim + mancozeb (818.40 kg ha-1) as compared to the rest but was statistically at par with thiophanate methyl (790.73 kg ha-1) and carbendazim (771.35 kg ha-1) followed by all the other treatments.

The protection conferred via chemical treatment of seeds is indispensable to the normal development of crops, with a view to the best use of its productive potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the soybean crop response, cultivate ‘FTS Paragominas RR’, to seed treatment. The study was conducted in an experimental area of the Center of Agrarian and Environmental Sciences of the Federal University of Maranhão, in Chapadinha (MA), from February to June 2018. A randomized complete block design was used, with split-plot in time. The plots consisted of five seed treatments: thiophanate-methyl + fluazinam fungicides, fludioxonil, carbendazim + thiram, the insecticide fipronil and the absence of the application. Throughout the crop cycle the agronomic characteristics were verified: plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area. And, at the time of harvesting, grain yield, the height of insertion of the first pod, the total number of pods and weight of 1000 grains. Seed treatments induced very variable responses on the growth and development of soybean ‘FTS Paragominas RR’. The best performances were obtained with the use of thiophanate-methyl + fluazinam fungicides (dose 198 mL) and fludioxonil (dose 200 mL). The application of carbendazim + thiram and fipronil, both at a dose of 200 mL, presented adverse effects throughout the vegetative and reproductive phases of soybean ‘FTS Paragominas RR’. None of the products provided significant increases in grain yield.

Background: Bio-fortification, the process of integrating nutrients into food crops, provides a sustainable and economic way of increasing the density of micronutrients in important staple crops. Agronomic bio-fortification is the easiest, practicable and fastest way for bio-fortification of pulse grains with Fe, Zn, or other desirable micronutrients. Increasing micronutrient rich foods and improving dietary diversity will substantially reduce micronutrient disorders. Methods: A field experiment was conducted during the post rainy seasons of 2015, 2016 and 2017 at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Kalaburagi, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur (Karnataka) to know the effect of soil and foliar fertilization of Zn and Fe on chickpea genotypes. Two genotypes (Annigeri 1 and JG 11) and six fertilization treatments (Control, 0.5% Zn, 0.1% Fe, Zn + Fe, seed treatment with 2 g Zn kg-1 seeds and soil application of Zn) were tested in medium black soils in split plot design with three replications.Result: The pooled data of three seasons indicated that the genotype JG 11, performed better than Annigeri 1 in terms of seed yield (1309 kgha-1), net returns (₹ 31634ha-1) and B: C ratio (2.52). On biofortification of Zn and Fe, foliar fertilization of Zn @ 0.5% + Fe @ 0.1% at flowering stage recorded significantly higher grain yield (1321 kgha-1), net returns (₹ 31179ha-1) and B: C ratio (2.44) over rest of the treatments. Further, foliar fertilization of Zn + Fe had significant influence on nutrient concentration (Zn and Fe) in chickpea grains. Thus, it could be concluded that combined biofortification of Zn + Fe to chickpea crop could be the viable agronomic intervention for getting higher productivity and nutritional security.

Early season brown spot caused by Septoria glycines was compared in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada, soybean fields planted with differing commercial seed treatments. Seed treatments that included fluopyram significantly reduced brown spot (P < 0.001). A greenhouse mist chamber experiment revealed that fluopyram seed treatment reduced the Area Under Disease Progress Curve of brown spot over a 6-week period (P < 0.001). Brown spot severity was unaffected by plant age at inoculation for the control treatment without fluopyram (P = 0.911); however, severity increased with plant age at inoculation for the fluopyram treatment (P = 0.009). The sensitivity of two S. glycines isolates to fluopyram was assessed by determining the effective concentration required to reduce its colony diameter growth in culture by 50% (EC50). Both isolates had an EC50 of 0.41 μg/ml of fluopyram. These results demonstrate that fluopyram seed treatment is effecttive at controlling early season brown spot in soybean. Accepted for publication 19 September 2016.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the suitability of the multivariate method of principal component analysis (PCA) using the GGE biplot software for grouping sunflower genotypes for their reaction to Alternaria leaf spot disease (Alternariaster helianthi), and for their yield and oil content. Sixty-nine genotypes were evaluated for disease severity in the field, at the R3 growth stage, in seven growing seasons, in Londrina, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, using a diagrammatic scale developed for this disease. Yield and oil content were also evaluated. Data were standardized using the software Statistica, and GGE biplot was used for PCA and graphical display of data. The first two principal components explained 77.9% of the total variation. According to the polygonal biplot using the first two principal components and three response variables, the genotypes were divided into seven sectors. Genotypes located on sectors 1 and 2 showed high yield and high oil content, respectively, and those located on sector 7 showed tolerance to the disease and high yield, despite the high disease severity. The principal component analysis using GGE biplot is an efficient method for grouping sunflower genotypes based on the studied variables.
