The study was conducted to evaluate an appropriate inclusion level of locally produced unprocessed or expander-processed coloured flowered faba bean (FB) (cv. ‘Kontu’) seeds in diets for laying hens. Egg production and egg quality variables were determined with 560 hens (Lohmann Selected Leghorn, LSL Classic) in a 40-week continued experiment. The hens were fed one of the five diets containing soybean meal as the main protein source. A diet without FB was served as a control diet. Both unprocessed and expander-processed FB was tested either in proportions of 50 g kg-1 or 100 g kg-1 in the diet. Faba bean inclusion (control vs. FB diets) had no effect on the egg production rate, egg mass production, feed consumption, or feed conversion ratio, but it decreased egg weight (p<0.05). Dietary FB inclusion tended to increase the mortality of the hens (p<0.10). Faba bean processing had no effects on egg production parameters or hen mortality. Daily egg mass production decreased and feed conversion ratio increased when FB proportion increased (from 50 to 100 g kg-1, p<0.05). Faba bean inclusion had no effects on egg exterior quality. It can be concluded that 50 g kg-1 of the FB studied (cv. ‘Kontu’) can be used in the diets of laying hens (LSL Classic) without negative effects on production performance or livability.

ABSTRAK. Performa produksi, jumlah folikel dan berat organ reproduksi diukur pada 40 ekor ayam petelur yang diberi perlakuan penambahan 5% tepung daun tumbuhan obat yaitu daun Katuk (5%TDK), daun Marigold (5%TDM), daun Senduduk (5%TDS) ke dalam ransum. Variabel yang diamati meliputi konsumsi ransum, persentase produksi telur, egg mass production, konversi ransum, berat dan panjang organ reproduksi dan jumlah folikel. Penambahan tepung tanaman obat tidak mempengaruhi konsumsi ransum ayam petelur. Hasil perhitungan persentase produksi telur mingguan menunjukkan hasil yang sama pada semua perlakuan. Perlakuan 5% tepung tanaman herbal tidak mempengaruhi egg mass production. Konversi ransum pada semua kelompok perlakuan tanaman obat adalah sama. Pemberian tepung tanaman obat di dalam ransum petelur tidak berpengaruh nyata pada jumlah folikel. Berat dan panjang organ reproduksi tidak dipengaruhi oleh perlakuan tepung tanaman obat. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penambahan 5% tepung daun Katuk, Marigold dan Senduduk dalam ransum menunjukkan konsumsi ransum, persentase produksi telur, egg mass production, konversi ransum, bobot dan panjang oviduk, berat ovarium dan jumlah folikel yang sama pada ayam petelur.         (Efficacy of medicinal plants on production performance and reproductive characteristics of laying hens) ABSTRACT. Efficacy of Katuk leaf meal, Marigold leaf meal and Senduduk leaf meal on production performance and reproductive characteristics were evaluated. Forty layers aged 32 weeks were distributed into 4 dietary treatments. The layers were housed in individual battery. One-way ANOVA treatment arranged in a Completely Randomized Design was used in this experiment. Dietary treatments were P0 (control without medicinal leaf meal), P1 (diet with 5% Katuk leaf meal), P2 (diet with 5% Marigold leaf meal), P3 (diet with 5% Senduduk leaf meal). This research measured feed intake, egg production, percentage of egg production, feed conversion ratio, number of follicles, weight of ovary, weight and length of oviduct as parameters. Significant results were tested by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The result showed that dietary treatments of medicinal leaf did not affect feed intake and feed conversion ratio of layers. Egg production percentage and egg mass production, the number of follicles, and length and weight of oviduct were similar of all medicinal leaf meal treatments. It can be concluded that feeding medicinal leaf meal did not affect production performance, number of follicles and weight of reproductive organs.

This experiment studied the effects of perches in furnished cages on behaviour and feed consumption of laying hens. The study used 352 Lohmann Selected Leghorn (LSL) hens. The hens were housed at 16 weeks of age in furnished cages in groups of 8 birds. The experiment lasted for 205 days. The treatments were: perches present from 16 weeks of age (P16), perches present from 19 weeks of age (P19), and no perches present (NP). Feed consumption and egg production were measured over the pre-laying period and six 4-week laying periods. The number of hens on perch, in nest and litter box was recorded at various ages. The behaviour of 3 hens per treatment was observed using instantaneous sampling at every 5 minutes, so that the observations of each hen covered one light period (14.5 hours). The treatments had no significant effects on feed consumption after the pre-laying period. Feed conversion ratio (kg feed kg-1 eggs) was favourable in P16 in comparison to NP during the periods 2–4. During the observations after the lights-out NP birds tended to be more frequently in nests, than P16 birds. NP birds spent more time on the cage floor, were recumbent more often, and sitting more rarely in comparison to P16 birds. Based on the results of this study, perches may have advantageous effect on feed conversion ratio in furnished cages.;

KUB chicken is a new breed of local chickens as the result of selection by the Indonesian Research Institute for Animal Production, Ciawi-Bogor. KUB chicken has been developed in South Kalimantan since early December 2013 at farmers assisted by livestock services in South Kalimantan and animal house belongs to the Assesment Institute of Agricultural Technology (AIAT) South Kalimantan. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the potency, production performance, and development opportunities of KUB chicken in South Kalimantan. KUB chickens have several advantages i.e. high egg production (160-180 eggs/hen/year), low brooding (±10%), faster growth, more savory meat taste, and adaptable to environment. Problems encountered in the development of KUB chicken in South Kalimantan are low hatchbility, expensive feed prices, and susceptible to diseases such as Newcastle Disease (ND) and Avian Influenza. Performance of KUB chicken at small farmers in South Kalimantan include egg production 65-67%, egg weight of 36.12-38.12 g/egg, feed consumption 85-105 g/head, feed conversion ratio 3.8-3.9, eggs fertility ranged between 90.21-92.61%, hatchability of eggs is 79.67-81.80% and DOC weight ranged from 34.50-36.86 g/head. Efforts to prevent diseases are the use of herb medicine, ND vaccination, and biosecurity. Appropriate feed technology, disease prevention and strengthen the marketing network are strategies that should be applied to develop KUB chicken in South Kalimantan. This will lead new job and increase farmers’ income.

Two experiments were conducted to study the response of laying hens to a commercial enzyme preparation (Safizyme XP20) containing 70 000 IU g-1 xylanase. In the first experiment, 270 laying hens (ISA Brown), aged 28 wk, were fed basal diets of wheat (W), wheat-barley (WB) or wheat-barley and wheat bran (WBB) without xylanase, or supplemented with 1400 IU xylanase kg-1 in 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. In the second experiment, 180 ISA Brown laying hens, aged 28 wk, were assigned to 2 × 2 factorial arrangement and fed wheat-based diets containing 2753 or 2653 kcal metabolizable energy (ME) kg-1 without xylanase, or supplemented with 1400 IU xylanase kg-1. Egg production (% hen-day), egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion ratio and changes in body weight were recorded for 12 wk. The effects of xylanase on true metabolizable energy (TME) values of wheat, barley and wheat bran were determined using roosters. Layers fed W-, WB- or WBB-based diets had similar egg mass. The feed conversion ratio of layers fed the WBB-based diet was better (P ≤ 0.05) than that of the other groups. Xylanase improved (P ≤ 0.05) egg mass of layers fed W- or WB-based diets, but it did not affect the performance of hens fed the WBB-based diet. Low dietary ME significantly (P ≤ 0.05) reduced the performance of laying hens. Xylanase supplementation improved (P ≤ 0.05) egg production, egg mass and feed conversion ratio of layers fed the low energy diet. It did improve the feed conversion ratio of layers fed the high-energy diet. Addition of 1400 IU xylanase kg-1 to the low-energy diet was equivalent to an increase of at least 100 kcal ME kg-1. Xylanase increased (P ≤ 0.05) the TME values by 5.2 and 2.44% for wheat and barley, respectively, and did not affect the TME value of wheat bran. This study was conducted to examine the effect of Hemicell® addition on diets containing different levels of crude fiber on performance and egg quality of laying hens. A total of 72 laying hens aged 21 weeks were randomly divided into 18 experimental units. A completely randomized design with factorial design 2×3 and 3 replications was employed in this study. Factor A was crude fiber level (5% and 8%) and factor B was the level of Hemicell®(0, 100x103 and 200x103 IU/kg ration).  Results showed that crude fiber significantly (P<0.01) increased feed consumption and decreased the performance of laying hens. The addition of Hemicell®in diets significantly (P<0.01) decreased feed consumption and increased the performance of laying hens. Hemicell®addition (100 IU) to a diet containing 8% crude fiber significantly (P<0.05) affected egg mass, feed conversion ratio, egg yolk score and egg weight. It can be concluded that diet with 8% crude fiber added with Hemicell® (100 IU) could increase egg mass, feed conversion ratio, egg weight and yolk color score.

Laying hens are adult hens that are specially kept for their eggs. This chicken has a high egg production capability. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the level of productivity of ISA Brown strain laying hens aged 24-28 weeks, by calculating and comparing ration consumption standards, Hen Day Production (HDP), Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), and mortality in laying hens CV Bisco Farm Talang Jawa Village, Merbau Mataram District, South Lampung Regency. The method used in the preparation is directly involved in conducting maintenance, discussion, study literature, and direct interviews. Feed consumption is 101 grams/bird /day, daily egg production or Hen Day Production (HDP) averaged 92.77%, the average FCR value was 1.89, and the mortality rate was 0.07%. Key words : layer, egg productivity, performance

This research aimed to investigate the influence of gradually feeding rejected laying hens after molting on the performance of production. This research used 6,000 rejected laying hens of 80 weeks old in Subur Farm. Molting method was a modification method by reducing the feed gradually. At the beginning of this research, the feed was given 120 g/laying hens/day and it would be reduced by 10 g/laying hens/day until it reach 50 g/laying hens/day. In the next phase, all chickens fasted for seven days then the chicken was given 10 g/laying hens on the first day. The feed was increased 10 g/laying hens every two days up to 120 g/laying hens/day. Data Collection of Feed conversion ratio (FCR), mortality rate, amount of feed, and egg production were taken at the start of re-feeding. The results showed that during the period of molting until refeeding, mortality was 3.6%, an increase in egg production was seen since week 1, peak of production was 78% at week 9 with FCR 2.3.  The results of statistical analysis showed significant differences (P<0.05) on the percentage of egg production between time periods after the treatment of feed reduction. As the conclusion, molting followed by refeeding in rejected laying hen influences weekly production performance by extending peak production period, optimal FCR and daily egg production.

Abstract. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of fluctuate lighting on performance of laying hens. Two programs were applied with 16 hours daily lighting: step-up (normal) lighting program as the control treatment and a fluctuate lighting program of 2 W/m2 for 45 min and 6 W/m2 for 15 min. Egg weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, henday egg production and hen-housed egg production of the laying hens were recorded for 46 weeks. No significant difference for hen-day and hen-housed egg production between the step up and fluctuate lighting programs (P>0.05) were found. However, fluctuate lighting program resulted in a significant increase in egg weight (P<0.05). Moreover, hens in the fluctuate lighting program consumed significantly less amount of feed and had a better feed conversion ratio than hens in the step-up lighting program (P<0.01). The results of the present study indicate that fluctuate lighting can be used for a profitable egg production.

Most poultry farmers in Nigeria feed their laying birds twice a day with one bag of 25 kg to 200 layers which translate to 125g/bird/day, while very few feed once or thrice a day and there has been little or no documentation on how many times laying hens should be fed in a day to optimize profit. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the performance and egg qualities of Isa-Brown layers fed different quantities of feed at varying feeding frequencies. Three hundred and sixty (360) 16-weeks in-lay Isa-Brown layers were used in this trial. The treatment consisted of 95g, 105g, 115g, and 125g of feed per day at varying frequencies of once, twice and thrice per day. The birds were housed in California type cages, 3 birds per cage unit, 5 cage units per replicate, and 6 replicates per treatment. A completely randomized experimental design with a 4x3 factorial was adopted. Results at the end of the trial showed that bird fed 115g of feed twice per day had the highest percentage hen-day production (85.24%), highest egg mass (56.69g) and best feed conversion ratio (1.96) while lowest percentage hen-day production (62.02%) and lowest egg mass (39.22g) were observed in hen fed 95g of feed thrice per day and worst feed conversion ratio (2.50) was recorded in bird fed 125g of feed thrice per day. The bird fed 115g twice per day had the highest net profit (N637.63) while the lowest net profit (N199.33) was recorded in bird fed 125g thrice per day. It could be concluded that for optimum laying performance and to save time and labour expended in feeding birds thrice per day, feeding laying Isa-Brown birds the required feed quantity (115g) twice per day would be most economical.

The aim of this study was to test the use of carrot juice fermentation with probiotics in rations with different levels on the production performance and quality of egg-laying hens. The material used was Lohman Brown strain of laying hens, 27 weeks old with an average initial body weight of 1.69 kg, as many as 45 birds. The research was conducted with experimental methods and used a Complete Design Acal (CRD). The treatment tested was the use of Carrot Extract Fermentation (FLSW) with probiotic SOC in the feed consisting of T1 = 100% basal ration, T2 = basal ration (97.5%) + FLSW (2.5%): T3 = basal ration ( 95%) + FLSW (5%); T4 = basal ration (92.5%) + FLSW (7.5%); T5 = basal ration (90%) + FLSW (10%). The variables observed were production performance (consumption, egg production (HDA / Hen Day Average), egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion and income over feed cost) and egg quality variables (albumin index, yolk index, Haugh Unit (HU), yolk color, albumin pH, yolk pH). The results of the analysis of variance showed that the use of carrot extract fermentation (FLSW) with different levels had a significant effect on feed consumption (Sig.115) and HDA (Sig.063), yolk index value (Sig.087) and yolk color (Sig. 000). , and not significantly different on feed conversion (Sig. 403), albumin index value (Sig. 522), and Haugh Unit (Sig. 259). The conclusion of the research showed that the use of fermented carrot juice waste (FLSW) in the feed of laying hens had an effect on feed consumption, egg production (Hen Day Averag / HDA), yolk index and yolk brightness (yolk color), but had no effect on conversion. feed, Haugh unit and albumin index value. Key words : probiotics, fermentation, carrot juice waste, production performance, egg quality
