(1) Background: Academic engagement has been reported in the literature as an important factor in the academic achievement of university students. Other factors such as emotional intelligence (EI) and resilience have also been related to students’ performance and quality of life. The present study has two clearly delimited and interrelated objectives. First, to study the mediational role that engagement plays in the relationship between EI and resilience on quality of life. Secondly, and similarly, to study the mediational role of engagement in the relationship between EI and resilience, but in this case on academic achievement. (2) Methods: For this purpose, four scales frequently used in the literature to measure emotional intelligence, resilience, academic engagement and quality of life were administered to 427 students of the University of Jaén undertaking education degrees. In addition, students were asked to indicate their current average mark as a measure of academic performance. Two mediational models based on structural equations were proposed to analyse the relationships between the proposed variables. (3) Results: The results obtained showed that emotional intelligence and resilience directly predicted students’ life satisfaction, but this direct relationship did not result in academic performance. In addition, and assuming a finding not found so far, engagement was shown to exert an indirect mediational role for both life satisfaction and academic performance of students. (4) Conclusions: The findings of the study support the importance of engagement in the design and development of instructional processes, as well as in the implementation of any initiative.

Abstract Background Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, clinics were forced to implement telehealth into clinical practice. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are a unique population that require long-term care to achieve and maintain deep remission of disease. Thus, they require stable and continuous contact with healthcare providers, often with multiple appointments. We examined an IBD predominant practice, also providing care for general gastrointestinal (GI) conditions in Kelowna, British Columbia. As telehealth has the potential to become a standard of care for clinics, patient satisfaction must be considered. We hypothesize that with the efficacy and ease of remote appointments, there will be an increase in patient satisfaction, quality of care, and quality of communication. Aims We aim to compare the level of patient satisfaction between in-person appointments pre-pandemic, and current remote appointment telehealth practices. Methods An online survey was sent to the 608 patients who had participated in one or more remote appointment between March 15-June 15, 2020. The survey compared the level of patient satisfaction, quality of care, and quality of communication between patient and doctor before and during the pandemic. It was also determined if patients would elect to continue with remote appointments in the future due to ease of use, and time/financial resources saved. Results Of the 273 participants, 80% were IBD patients while 20% were treated for other GI conditions. A total of 78% reported that they would elect to continue with remote appointments as their primary point of care with their doctor. The remaining 22% reported that they prefer in-person visits due to the necessity of a physical exam, yet specified that communication by these remote means was still of good quality. Levels of patient satisfaction before and during the pandemic remained consistent, where 59% of patients assigned a satisfaction rating of 10 (highest) to their pre-pandemic in-person appointments, and 54% of patients assigned a rating of 10 to their remote appointments during the pandemic. Similar consistent results were found for quality of care and quality of communication. A total of 70% of patients reported that if this service had not been available, they would have sought out other forms of care; 18% of the total responses considering emergency care. Conclusions IBD patients at Kelowna Gastroenterology perceived similar levels of satisfaction, quality of care, and quality of communication with both in-person and telehealth appointments. This suggests that telehealth practices may be a cost-effective, sustainable appointment style that provides comparable quality to in-person appointments. Funding Agencies None

Emotional intelligence plays a critical role in adolescence since it involves a change towards psychological, social, and sexual maturity; a stage in which the foundations of intimate social relationships are established. Emotional competences regulate the quality of these relationships in adolescence and can provide protection against or facilitate the use of violence within them. Based on the above, this study aims to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence and violence exercised, received, and perceived by adolescents in dating relationships. A sample of 254 subjects (43.1% men and 56.9% women) between 12 and 18 years old was analyzed through the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaires of BarOn ICE:NA and Violence Exercised Perceived and Received by Adolescents VERA. The results of the research have shown that there is a significant and inverse relation between the dimensions of emotional intelligence and the violence exercised by adolescents in their dating relationships, and a positive and significant relation between emotional intelligence and the perception of violent behavior. For this reason, the importance of educating people about emotional intelligence from childhood within both the academic and family sphere is highlighted. This is fundamental to preventing the appearance of such violent behaviors and promoting an adequate adaptation to the environment.

Depression is a major co-morbidity in patients with inflammatory arthritides. In addition to the inflammatory processes, factors like pain, quality of life and trait emotional intelligence or the awareness on one's emotion and the ability to regulate these effectively may be associated with the presence of depression in this population.AimsThe aims of the present study were to determine the rates of depression in patients with psoriatic (PsA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) attending a tertiary referral centre, and to investigate possible factors that are associated with depression in this population.MethodsInterim data pertaining to depression (HADS), pain (British Pain Society Pain scale), quality of life (EuroQoL), physical function (HAQ-DI), inflammation (CRP) and emotional intelligence (Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - TEIQue-SF) were analysed from data from 100 patients (50 PsA and 50 RA).ResultsUpto 30% of patients with PsA and RA were found to be depressed. Similarly, upto 25% of patients with PsA and RA fulfilled the criteria for caseness on the HADS A subscale.None of these patients were on therapeutic doses of an antidepressant. There was significant correlation between depression scores and scores on quality of life, disability and emotional intelligence. Together, they explained almost 50% of the variance in depression scores.ConclusionThe prevalence of depression is high in people with inflammatory arthritides. Disability, Quality of life and trait emotional intelligence seems to be important factors associated with inflammation and presence of depression in this population.
