Communication is a primary need for every human being, including people with disabilities. Disability people, such as deaf people, also have interaction patterns to communicate effectively. Effective communication patterns can provide teaching and learning fluently at the Darul Ashom Islamic Boarding School for the Deaf, Yogyakarta. This research aims to study the effective communication design by teachers with deaf students in the Darul Ashom Islamic Boarding School for the Deaf, Yogyakarta. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Herbert Blumer’s symbolic interaction analysis perspective. This study indicates that the interaction pattern between deaf students and the teacher uses several symbols in the interaction process, such as spoken language, body language, sign language, and picture symbols. These symbols emerge and are used in the interaction process, especially the teaching and learning technique and memorization. The activities carried out by the students such as Tahsin, memorization, fiqh and hadith studies, murojaah and simaan also illustrate the use of symbolic interactions. The symbolic interaction has a meaning that the communicant and communicator understand to achieve effective communication.

<p><em>The condition of special school for the deaf and the deaf itself are still apprehensive, especially in Bekasi, West Java. Meanwhile, deaf persons still need to get an education which equivalent to the education that normal children get. However, education for children with special needs, especially those with hearing impairment, requires special implementations based on deaf’s characteristics in some design aspects in order to improve physical and psychological comfort required by deaf students so they can be more comfortable adapting to school circumstances. Design method that seems appropriate to be applied to this special school for the deaf is psychological architecture approach that focuses on the characteristics of the deaf itself. Psychological architecture as design method that used in this special school is adjusted to the characteristics of hearing impaired in order to improve the quality of physical and psychological comfort of deaf students in the learning process and activities by applying the principles of psychological architecture on site analysis, school layout arrangement, and also the appearance of interior and exterior of special school for the deaf.</em></p>

<P>This study tested the effects of linguistic qualifiers and intensifiers on the number and types of replies elicited per argument and per challenge posted in online debates. To facilitate collaborative argumentation, thirty-two students (22 females, 10 males) enrolled in a graduate-level online course classified and labeled their messages as arguments, challenges, supporting evidence, or explanations prior to posting each message. The findings showed that qualified arguments elicited 41 percent fewer replies (effect size = -.64), and the reduction in replies was greatest when qualified arguments were presented by females than males. Challenges without qualifiers, however, did not elicit more replies than challenges with qualifiers. These findings suggest that qualifiers were used to hedge arguments, and such behaviors should be discouraged during initial stages of identifying arguments (more so in all-female than in all-male groups) in order to elicit more diverse and more opposing viewpoints needed to thoroughly and critically analyze arguments. <BR></P> <P><STRONG>Keywords:</STRONG> Computer-mediated communication, CMC, communication style, group interaction patterns, interaction analysis, computer-supported collaborative learning, CSCL, collaborative argumentation.</P>

Local culture everywhere presents meaning space as a guideline for people’s lives, even the presence of tradition can be a medium of social transformation. The tandhe’ as one of the local cultural treasures in Sumenep Madura, emerged as an appreciation of past civilizations that believe that tandhe’ is not a mere spectacle but also as a communication medium that contains the values of goodness. Signs implicitly or explicitly important to learn because it often contains the essence of da’wah which calls on humans to remember God. Tandhe’ as a manifestation of local wisdom will be an effective communication medium for building communities when properly packaged, because cultural anomalies can occur at any time. The researcher uses a qualitative approach in the form of field research so that researchers can directly make observations and even participate in contributing ideas as feedback from informants ideas. The presence of tandhe’ has until now experienced a shift in the function and purpose of tandh’ itself. The ancient kings tandhe’ functioned as the media for the propaganda used by Walisongo in order to spread the teachings of Islam. The religious value of the tandhe’ began to fade because the lovers of the tandhe’ began to abandon the teachings taught by the Walisongo. Tandhe’ at the moment is more dominant in the nature of entertainment which aims only for worldly purposes only. Tandhe’ essentially has a symbolic communication used by Walisongo in preaching Islam to the community which is also a symbol of tirakat by human.

"How does understanding occur in encounters of living beings? What is experienced by the interaction partners and what happens in the ‘In-Between’? And how can this be captured? In this paper an enactive approach to interaction is proposed with the focus on reciprocal intercorporeal attunement and co-creation of meaning in a specific environment. As alternative framework this approach is applied to the interaction of d/Deaf persons and animals. In the interaction with an animal, verbal communication - which is challenging for d/Deaf persons - is of secondary importance, so this frame is well suited to focus on intercorporeal attunement. In the interaction discourse regarding d/Deaf persons as well as Human-Animal-Interaction the assessment of the interaction process as such and embodied research methodologies are scarcely to be found. With the enactive approach new perspectives on the mechanisms of interaction and the influencing conditions can be opened as well as new approaches to respective research options. Additionally, traditional patterns of Islamic teaching and learning of Akhlak materials are applied i.e. Bandungan, Sorogan, and Wetonan as well as conventional learning steps including Tarjamah, Pendhabitan Harakat, Imlak, Mutholaah, and Memorizing methods. Small difference in terms of media used among those Islamic boarding schools does not lead to significant highlighted aspect since all of the Kitab used is contained about Akhlak or particularly regarding with how to build positive characters, behavior, and attitude of the students. Finally, future implication is also served and discussed in this research.

Education for the deaf in Mexico has gone through many stages. It started out with a school for the deaf where Mexican Sign Language flourished, then moved across the spectrum to a medical-rehabilitation paradigm in which sign language was seen as a threat to the development and use of spoken language, and then focused on the integration of deaf students with children with other disabilities. Today the public school system promotes inclusion for deaf students in regular classrooms with very poor or no specialized support. Although the normative and legal framework in Mexico supports the use of sign language and bilingual education, the situation on the ground is less than optimal. This chapter discusses the achievements and the challenges we face in providing quality education that establishes a firm basis for the total inclusion of the deaf in Mexico. The experience of the Instituto Pedagógico para Problemas del Lenguaje (IPPLIAP) with a bilingual educational model is covered. Results of a survey of teachers who work with deaf learners throughout the country are reviewed.
