The work of the later Wittgenstein has had a vast influence in the field of social science. This is hardly surprising as the effect of that philosophy has been an emphasis on the priority of the social. Empiricist philosophy started with the private experience of the individual and from there built up an inter-subjective picture of the world. Wittgenstein, on the other hand, began with the rule-governed practices of a community. Both the nature of private experience, and of an objective world, was deemed to depend on concepts all could share. Society is the source of such concepts and thus becomes the key notion in our understanding of ourselves and our relation to the world.

The article discusses the image of Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew city, as it is described in the novelPreliminariesby S. Yizhar (Yizhar Smilansky), one of Israel's best-known authors. In this novel, which engages with the question of home and borders, borders function as a double-edged sword: on the one hand, they define home and create a circumscribed place for the protagonist and his family. On the other hand, the novel dwells on the urge to cross borders and shatter the distinction between home and the world. In this regard, Tel Aviv is sometimes described as a pleasant, “normal” city, yet at other times it is written as a perilous place—since it divides between Jews and Arabs. Tel Aviv is also the place where one can imagine a great future or see a concealed history. It is a total urban experience, encapsulating the individual.

The obligation to personally provide the creative work is inscribed in the nature and essence of creative work. The creative work is based on the individual characteristics and predispositions of the creator. The nature of creative work determines the obligation to provide it personally. On the other hand, the obligation to personally provide the creative work is a prerequisite for the existence of an employment relationship (i.e. labor relationship). Therefore, in case of creative work, there is a strengthening of the obligation to provide it personally because of the unique nature of performed, creative work. The personal character of creative work overlaps with the subject of the service as well as the entity of the service. The obligation to perform the work personally is not only the completion of the necessary elements of the labor relationship, but it guarantees also the performance of the employment duties by the competent employee according to the employer decision.

This paper examines the crucial role of verbal tenses for the text constitution and, especially, for the creation of narrative perspectives in the tale about St. Augustin's life, Sur les pas de Saint Augustin, written by the contemporary ’Maghrebian‘ author Kebir Ammi. On the one hand, it will be explored how the different tenses contribute in a substantial way to the creation of narrative perspectives, respectively, to narrative focalizations. On the other hand, the importance of the tenses in the structuring and organization of the individual episodes will be highlighted and, last but not least, their contribution to the semiotic dimension of the text. Finally, in an overarching perspective, the article casts light on the narrative potential inherent in tense categories and on the relevance of a modern tense theory for narrative research.

With the advent of the Internet a little over a decade ago, technology has enabled communities to move beyond the physical face-to-face contacts to the virtual realm of the World Wide Web. With the advent of highways in the 1950s and 1960s, communities were created in suburbia. The Internet, on the other hand, over the last fifteen years, has enabled the creation of a myriad of virtual communities that have limitless boundaries around the entire globe.

This chapter investigates the differences in attitudes to study and work between present-day hasidim and mitnaggedim. It considers the concept of tsimtsum—a process underlying the work of Creation through which God was concealed on various levels in the process of creation. Thus, God withdrew Himself, as it were, in order to make room for Creation. This view was accepted in principle by both hasidim and mitnaggedim, but each group gave it a completely different interpretation. According to the mitnaggedim, God had withdrawn His essence from the world, so that the material world that remained was less divine. Consequently, any real relationship with God could be established only through the spiritual activity of studying the Torah in which He had revealed Himself. According to hasidic teachings, on the other hand, tsimtsum refers only to the concealment of a certain divine manifestation and not to the withdrawal of God Himself. From this, it follows that God's essence is present in matter as well; His infinity has not been affected by the creation of the world.

Throughout his life Pinter always showed, both as artist and as social being, a profound respect for the rights of the individual and human dignity. His dramatic output as well as his overt political activity demonstrate his unbroken adherence to the ideology and behaviour of a citizen of the world. My endeavour in this paper will be to argue about what I shall call Pinter’s visceral cosmopolitanism. This approach, on the one hand, reads his political actions through the highly politicized agenda of the contemporary cosmopolitan discourse and, on the other hand, it adopts a more retrospective point of view, which seeks to find a fundamental correspondence between the Pinteresque uncertainty, fear and ambiguity and Immanuel Kant’s rather more ethical understanding of cosmopolitanism, especially his novel idea of hospitality.
