DEVELOPING MATERIAL FOR LEARNING VOCABULARY BASED ON PUZZLE GAME FOR THE STUDENTS MAJORING IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING  OF SMK NEGERI 2 MEDAN

The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop reading material for tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Medan, (2) to develop students’ vocabulary by playing puzzles as the task. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D). The research procedures were adapted from Borg and Gall. This research were designed through six phases; 1) gathering data and information, 2) analyzing the data, 3) designing materials, 4) validating materials, 5) revising, and 6) final product. The data of this research were taken from existing materials, syllabus, teacher’s interview and students’ questioners. The result of this study showed that the students’ existing material were not relevant to electrical engineering program. The vocabulary that students’ get from the existing materials was less. The designing material was validated by English teacher and English lecturer. The product of this study is a set of reading material entitled “electricity holic” for students in SMK Negeri 2 Medan. This research aimed to develop appropriate English reading materials for grade eleventh students in SMK Farmasi-YPFSU Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design by adapting Borg and Gall’s research theory (2003) through six steps, such as: (1) Gathering data and information, (2) Analyzing data, (3) Designing new materials, (4) Validating new materials by experts, (5) Revising, and (6) Final product. The data of this research were the existing reading materials and the results of need analysis. The sources of the data were the textbook, students and teacher. The class consisted of 30 grade eleventh students. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaire, interview, and documents. The questionnaire was analyzed as quantitative data and the interview result was analyzed as qualitative data. The questionnaire and interview was done to get the students’ need. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which cointain English for pharmacy program. Thus, developing English reading materials were procedure text. The developed procedure texts were related to the pharmacy program. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,03 from English Lecturer and 4,57 from English Teacher. It means the developing reading materials categorized as appropriate or relevant for the grade eleventh students in SMK Farmasi-YPFSU Medan.

This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Audio Video Program based on Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. It was conducted in SMK N 1 PercutSei Tuan, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 23 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Audio Video program.The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as suitable or approriate for grade X of Audio Video program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Audio Video Program.

This research aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of electrical engineering study program at SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.The subject of this study were students of class X-l2 of electrical engineering study program consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 38 respondents to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for electrical engineering study program. Thus, The materials were then developed through Contextual Teaching and Learning approach which implementation by REACT (relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring) and developed with their study program and work life situation. The learning materials were developed into 6 units of speaking material. by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,5 or 90% from English Lecturer and 4,4 or 87,6% from English teacher.It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X students of electrical engineering study program. This study deals with the development of English Speaking Materials for Students of Automotive Engineering Study Program at SMK Sinar Husni. The objective of this study is: to develop appropriate English speaking materials for students of automotive engineering program at SMK Sinar Husni through Task-Based Learning (TBL). The research procedures of this study were Research and Development (R & D) though six stages; Gathering information and data, Analyzing data, Designing the first draft of material, Validating by experts, Rivising and Designing the final product. The subject of this research was class X-1 students of Automotive Engineering study program consisting of 45 students. The instruments for collecting data used in this research were documentary sheet, questionnaire and interview. The result of questionnaire and interview show that students need English speaking materials which appropriate to their major that is Automotive Engineering. Thus, the result of this study was a supplementary material of English speaking through task-based learning which consist of title, objective, let’s start, let’s practice, language reference.The English speaking materials were developed into 3 units of speaking materials. They were then validated by two experts. The average scores are 4,4 from English Lecturer and 4,4 from English Teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X Students of Automotive Engineering study Program.

This study aimed at developing good reading comprehension materials for reading 1st course in second semester of Social and Politic Science Faculty at Mahen- dradatta University. It was developed by using the Research and Development proposed by Sugiyono (2010). The content of the product was based on Competency Standard and Basic Competency mentioned in the syllabus. The reading materials which have been provided for the second grade of reading 1st course in second grade of Social and Poli- tic Science Faculty at Mahendradatta University based on the criteria of a good reading material, involved the reading comprehension materials for reading 1st course that are relevant to convey the topic of (1) Grief and Escape, (2) Speech Production, (3) Career Women, (4) Visiting Bali, (5) “Ada Apa dengan Cinta?”, and (6) How to make Ice Cream. The reading comprehension materials, which should be developed, involved the skill of(1) understanding text organization, (2) inferring, (3) evaluating the text, (4) predicting,(5) understanding the writer’s style, and (6) dealing with unfamiliar words. The reading materials were corrected by the expert judges and field tested. The product, which was in the form of reading materials, was tried out twice. Firstly, it was tried out to the twenty students of the second semester and one lecturer Mahendradatta University. The result of the analysis showed that there were some invalid items. Then, the product was revised. Secondly, it was tried out in the second semester and two lecturers Mahendradatta Uni- versity. The results of the analysis showed that all of the items were valid. The product did not need to be revised again. Therefore, it could be used for reading 1st course in second semester of Social and Politic Science Faculty at Mahendradatta University.

The aim of this study was to find out an appropriate English listening materials for the Grade X students of music performing art vocational school. Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) or Vocational School is an institution where students are prepared to be work-ready after finishing their education in specific major. Music Performing Art is one of the major provided in Indonesia’s vocational school. By the fact that listening activities are often ignored by teachers and that listening is one of the test in the National Examination, then listening activities are considered important in English learning activity. However, the finding of materials that provided for the Grade X students of Music Performing Art major at SMK Negeri 11 Medan shows that the listening materials provided in the textbook are not related to the students’ major, instead the materials are rather general and more suitable for other major. Therefore, it is needed to develop the English listening materials for the tenth grader of music performing art major. Small-Scale Research and Development (R&D) is the suitable method in developing the materials. Based on the students’ needs analysis obtained from the questionnaires which responded by 64 students and interviews which involved 4 students, the researcher found that 78.13% of the respondents assumed that the existing materials provided by the teachers are general, and further 93.75% expect a major-related English listening materials. The materials are developed by adding some musical terms, like music instruments, and topics related to musical field, like popular singer’s profile, as a step to meet the students’ needs. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used. Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to the English teachers in SMK Negeri 11 Medan, especially, and in other music major vocational school, generally, who are expected to provide materials which are related to the students’ major, by doing so the students might have motivation in learning English and to support their knowledge to be a professional musicians. The objective of this study was to develop the appropriate English reading materials in report text for students of electrical engineering program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 35 students of electrical engineering program and administering interview to the teacher. The result of this study was a set of developed teaching reading materials as supplementary entitled “English for Electrical Engineering Students” which covers of three chapters on the topics of (1) things in electrical about hammer drill, (2) natural phenomena about lightning and aurora, (3) social phenomena about short circuit and electric shock. It is also accompanied by documents such as syllabus, lesson plans, reading materials, worksheets, and assessments. This study is aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was Grade X students of Culinary Art Department of SMKN 1 Kisaran, Asahan, Sumatera Utaraconsisting of 25 students. The data consist of syllabus, lesson plan, syllabus and existing materials. Instrument of collecting data were questionnaires and interview which were used to collect information about students’ needs and learning needs. The evaluation of existing reading materials showed that the existing reading materials are not intended for students of Culinary Art Department. The existing reading materials are intended for all vocational students. After the students’ need and reading materials had been analyzed, the new reading material was developed that considering the students’ need and the relevant with culinary. The genre of the reading texts which were developed is descriptive text.The product was validated by an English teacher and an English lecturer with the mean score is 4.1 from 5. The product is categorized as “Good and Relevant” reading materials.

Predicting readability level of reading texts can help the teachers to match the texts with student’s grade. The appropriate reading text is expected to ease the students in comprehending the material. This research focused on the readability level of English reading material found in English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for first grade of Senior High School Published by Curriculum and Books Center, Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Education and Culture. This study attempts to find out whether the reading materials are appropriate or not in terms of readability level for the target students. This research used descriptive quantitative design. The object of the research is English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for First Grade of Senior High School published by Curriculum 2013. The textbook consists fifteen chapters which contained kinds of reading materials such as dialogue and reading texts. The researcher only focuses on analyzing the reading materials. There are three kinds of genre found in this book, they are descriptive, recount and narrative. The data were collected by using document analysis. In calculating readability level, the researcher employed the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula. The results of the study showed that there were 9 reading texts in the Bahasa Inggris textbook. From those 9 texts found that there were 3 descriptive texts, 4 recount texts, and 2 narrative texts. According to the analysis using Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula, the researcher found that there were 3 texts in Fairly Easy level, 3 texts in Fairly Difficult level, and 3 texts in Difficult level. In average, the texts are in Fairly Difficult level (57,3). Based on the theory of Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula, it is found that the texts are in the appropriate level for tenth grade students.Keyword: Readability level, Reading Material, Textbook.

This study concerns on how reading text are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. It was started from collecting the data, analyzing data, designing course grid, designing new reading material by using Scientific Approach, validating by experts, and revising for final product. The new reading material contained of five stages namely; observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and communicating. The source of data of this study was the grade X students of Computer Engineering and Networking Program at SMKS Taman Siswa Medan consisting 24 students. Instrument of collecting data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Computer Engineering and Networking program. The materials which were developed were focused on descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts. The average scores are 3,4 both from English teacher and English lecturer.
