This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Audio Video Program based on Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. It was conducted in SMK N 1 PercutSei Tuan, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 23 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Audio Video program.The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as suitable or approriate for grade X of Audio Video program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Audio Video Program.

This research aimed to develop appropriate English reading materials for grade eleventh students in SMK Farmasi-YPFSU Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design by adapting Borg and Gall’s research theory (2003) through six steps, such as: (1) Gathering data and information, (2) Analyzing data, (3) Designing new materials, (4) Validating new materials by experts, (5) Revising, and (6) Final product. The data of this research were the existing reading materials and the results of need analysis. The sources of the data were the textbook, students and teacher. The class consisted of 30 grade eleventh students. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaire, interview, and documents. The questionnaire was analyzed as quantitative data and the interview result was analyzed as qualitative data. The questionnaire and interview was done to get the students’ need. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which cointain English for pharmacy program. Thus, developing English reading materials were procedure text. The developed procedure texts were related to the pharmacy program. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,03 from English Lecturer and 4,57 from English Teacher. It means the developing reading materials categorized as appropriate or relevant for the grade eleventh students in SMK Farmasi-YPFSU Medan.

This research aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of electrical engineering study program at SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.The subject of this study were students of class X-l2 of electrical engineering study program consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 38 respondents to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for electrical engineering study program. Thus, The materials were then developed through Contextual Teaching and Learning approach which implementation by REACT (relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring) and developed with their study program and work life situation. The learning materials were developed into 6 units of speaking material. by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,5 or 90% from English Lecturer and 4,4 or 87,6% from English teacher.It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X students of electrical engineering study program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), Speaking materials,Contextual Teaching and Learning, Electrical Engineering Program

This study aims to develop reading materials needed for students at SMKN 8 Medan.The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) develop through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, develop new materials, validating by experts, revising and final product. It was conducted at SMKN 8 Medan, especially grade XI. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 27 students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the Kemendikbud (Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan), syllabus and students’ need. Thus, developing materials are narrative text, the narrative texts expose the texts about fashion which are adjacent with students’ need. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4.6 or 92 % from English Lecturer and 4.75 or 95% or from English Teacher. This study concerns on how reading text material are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was class XI SMK N 10 Medan consisting of 22 students. Instrumentations for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 25 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for cosmetology major. Thus, developing materials were procedure text. The developed teaching material were related to the vocation that the students had; it was beauty major. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,25 from English subject teacher and 4,17 English lecturer. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for students of beauty major grade XI.

This study dealt with the development of English Reading Materials of vocational school, Al-WashliyahTeladan Medan, majoring Software Engineering. The objectives of this study were to: 1) find out language skill and materials are needed by the students of Software Engineering, 2) develop the English materials for the majoring in software engineering students at the vocational high school grade XII. This study was conducted by Educational Research and Development R&D (Borg & Gall, 1989). The data of this research were from existing documents and the result of interview with teacher and student. The results of the research conveyed that the existing reading materials were mostly irrelevant because the title and content of the material was not appropriate and was not required for the students majoring in software engineering. The new English reading materials and syllabus were developed based on the students need related to the workplace. The materials and syllabus were developed from the existing materials from teacher. The developing materials were validated by two experts.

This study aims to develop appropriate English speaking materials for grade X students of  Beauty Study Program at SMK Negeri 1 Beringin. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating new materials by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was grade X students of Beauty study program consisting of 19 students. The instrumentations for collecting data were questionairre and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing the questionairre to 19 respondents to get the students’ needs. The result of questionairre and interview prove that the students need English speaking materials which appropriate to their major that is Beauty study program. Thus, developing English speaking materials consist of three units, they are welcome to our beauty salon, complimenting and showing care, and congratulations on your achievement. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4.3 from English Lecturer and 4.5 from English Teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade X Students of Beauty study program.

This study aims to design English reading materials needed for students atSMK Panca Budi 2 Medan and develop English reading materials for students atSMK Panca Budi 2 Medan. The research was conducted by Research andDevelopment (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and finalproduct. It was conducted at SMK Panca Budi 2 Medan, especially grade XII. Thedata were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributingquestionnaire to 30 students to get the students’ needs. The interview andquestionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials whichcontain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the BSNP (Badan Standar NasionalPendidikan), syllabus, and students’ level. Thus, developing materials are proceduretext. The procedure texts expose the texts about clerical duties which are adjacentwith students’ life. There are 3 text provided, they are: Arranging a Business Trip,How to Document Petty Cash Slips and Arranging a Formal Meeting. The productshave been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,25 from English teacher and4,25 English lecturer. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant orappropriate for students at SMK Panca Budi 2 Medan grade XII.

This study concerns on how reading text are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. It was started from collecting the data, analyzing data, designing course grid, designing new reading material by using Scientific Approach, validating by experts, and revising for final product. The new reading material contained of five stages namely; observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and communicating. The source of data of this study was the grade X students of Computer Engineering and Networking Program at SMKS Taman Siswa Medan consisting 24 students. Instrument of collecting data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Computer Engineering and Networking program. The materials which were developed were focused on descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts. The average scores are 3,4 both from English teacher and English lecturer. The study aims to make an appropriate English reading textbook for grade XI students of aviation management vocational school, Medan. This study was conducted by applying the six phases of educational research and development proposed by Borg and Gall which are 1) Gathering information and data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Developing Procedure Text Materials, 4) Validating new procedure text materials by expert, 5) Revising reading procedure text materials based on experts’ suggestions, and 6) Final Products (Reading Procedure Text Textbook). It was found that students and teacher agreed that the existing materials currently used by the students were irrelevant with aviation management’s students. The irrelevance materials were then developed by applying the ESP approach. The texts were developed into five new relevant procedure text materials. The new materials were validated by two experts. The average score of the validation was 4.6. It showed that the new procedure text materials were very good, relevant, and feasible.

This study aimed to develop English reading materials needed for students ofCerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School through Authentic Material Approach(AMA).The objective of this study was to develop relevant English readingmaterials to the needs of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School studentsespecially eight grade . This study was conducted by Research and Development(R&D) design through six phases: 1) Collecting data, 2) Analyzing data, 3)Developing new materials, 4) Validating product 5) Revising materials, 6) finalproduct. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus,students’ questionnaire, and the teachers’ interview. The result of this researchshowed that the existing materials were not suitable to the Islamic schoolstudents’ needs.. Therefore, new English reading materials were developedthrough Authentic Material Approach (AMA) principles in order to meet theIslamic students’ needs. Furthermore, developing English reading materials wererecount text. Recount text expose personal recount “Tarawih Changed his Lifeand the biographical recounts of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Shalahuddin Al-Ayyubi”. The English reading materials were validated by English teacher andEnglish lecturer. Both of them agreed that new English reading materials weresuitable with the Islamic school students’ needs.
