The present study analyzes the narratives by Russian bloggers on the 2008 South-Ossetia conflict. This analysis of political discourse is underpinned by the principles of cognitive linguistics, developed on the basis of bodily experience of human beings. The combination of different approaches leads to a more comprehensive analysis and concise interpretation of events taking place in society. This cognitive-discursive perspective differs from traditional studies of mass media narratives which mostly base on Discourse Analysis (DA) and/or Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), i.e., language in use is studied from the perspective of meaning on/ above the level of sentences and through the relationship between language and society, as well as language and power. Methodologically, this study was conducted on the basis of integrative speech analysis, critical discourse analysis, and cognitive linguistics. From the cognitive point of view, bloggers’ discourse is based on concepts evaluated positively (BENEFIT, FAIRNESS/HONORABLE CASE), negatively (CONQUER, PROBLEM, VANDALISM, NEGOTIATED MATCH), and neutrally (DEMONSTRATION, TEST). From the linguistic point of view, in their discourse, bloggers extensively use metaphors, which belong to the most effective ways of expressing opinions and are widely used by the media to create vivid images of the events described. A qualitative generalization of the data of content analysis proves that the attitude of Russian bloggers to the conflict is quite diverse, there is no consensus about how the war was fought, about its results, about the current situation and future prospects for the region.

This study included a type of qualitative research using S Jager and F Maier's critical discourse analysis methods by making a synopsis, determining the main characters, discursive practices, non-discursive practices, object materialization, and theorizing of advertising themes. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that there were signs that identified the practice of commodification of da'wah messages on the best savings version of pertamina ads in the form of images, conversations, and texts in the description of the ad stories. The message of commodified da'wah becomes a narrative that charity will be a shelter for humans when in the hereafter. The missionary message was conveyed in order to increase knowledge, change attitudes and mindset of the community and convey corporate messages so that people are economical in using fuel and not too consumptive in buying motorcycles. The researcher concluded that da'wah messages which are noble religious messages in order to change human beings for the better and get happiness in the world and the hereafter can be packaged and utilized as a matter for transforming values into exchange values that are image-building for corporate interests.

The paper presents a critical discourse analysis of the website of one of the world’s major oil companies, Beyond Petroleum (BP), formerly British Petroleum, with the focus on investigating the construction of BP’s corporate identity. The analysis reveals that BP enacts multiple positive discursive roles, including the identities of an indispensable organization, a philanthropist, an environmentally conscious company, an explorer, a researcher, an educator and an American dream achiever. These roles serve as a potent legitimizing strategy since they enable BP to be associated with higher social and moral values. The analysis shows that BP’s environmentally protective ethos adopts the ideology of the domination of human beings over nature through technology, an ideology which is suited to the company’s profit-making purpose.

This study attempts to conduct a multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) of Incognegro (2008), a graphic novel by Mat Johnson and arts by Warren Pleece, by applying Michael Halliday’s theory of the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) (1994) for the written texts, i.e. the captions found on the images, and Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s Grammar of Visual Design (GVD), or what has been recently called Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA) (1996) for the images themselves. The study employs, as well, Teun A. van Dijk’s modal of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (2004), in which power, racism, segregation, oppression, ethnicity, inequality, discrimination, identity, superiority, inferiority, dominant groups, and dominated groups are being analyzed. The study aims at showing the inequality, the oppression, the racial discrimination, and the exercised power Negroes previously suffered (1930s) in America, the land of freedom, and how this suffering is depicted through graphic novels for historical documentation. The study shows that the Whites considered themselves the dominant group, whereas the Negroes were treated as slaves, not even equal to human beings, and hence are recognized to be the oppressed and the dominated group.

Recent calls in medical education and health care emphasize equitable care for disadvantaged patient populations (DPP), with education  highlighted as a key mechanism to move toward this goal. However, in order to develop effective education strategies we must first better understand the DPP concept. We conducted a theory-informed needs assessment to explore the concept of DPP as understood in our hospital.  Using an interpretive qualitative approach informed by principles of critical discourse analysis we conducted focus groups with trainees and staff across professions and groups, as identified in the hospital’s strategic plan, representing “patients experiencing disadvantage.” We identified three main perceptions about DPP:  1) disadvantaged patients require care above and beyond what is normal; 2) the system is to blame for failures in serving disadvantaged patients; and 3) labelling patients is problematic and stigmatizing. In response, patients wanted to be first seen as valuable human beings rather than as a burden or category. Patients appreciated that the DPP concept opened up better access to care, but also felt ‘othered’ by the concept. As a result, patients felt they were not accessing the same level of care in terms of compassion and respect.  Our findings suggest potential for three, theory-informed educational approaches to help improve care for patients experiencing disadvantage: 1) sharing authentic and varied stories; 2) fostering dialogue; and 3) aligning assessment approaches with educational approaches. Additionally, we suggest a need to define access beyond the ability to receive services; according to our participants, access must also engender a sense of common humanity and respect.

People as social human beings need a language for communication in daily activities. Communication can be found in many forms, one of them is speech. Thus, related to speech and the function of the speech to society the writer is interested in analysing the language, power and ideology in the speech of President Jokowi’s. This study uses critical discourse analysis theory, where it can be found that ideology can be revealed with the use of vocabulary, grammar and text structure of the speaker. The writer uses qualitative method by analysing Jokowi’s speech transcript. The writer also uses identity method by applying sociolinguistics method and pragmatic method. For presenting the data, the writer uses informal method. The writer found eight ideologies in analysing Jokowi’s speech such as the ideology of equality, the ideology in unity, the ideology to honour the law, the ideology of social justice, the ideology in prioritizing citizen, the ideology of national prosperity, the ideology of hard working, and the ideology in assertiveness. The result of this study shows a proof about the relationship between language, power, and ideology. As an Indonesian president, Jokowi has the power to choose the utterance in his speech. Through power over language, Jokowi can reveal the ideology that he holds so that the citizens can understand and follow his ideology.

Discourses are mostly used by the elites as a means of controlling public discourse and hence, the public mind. In this way, they try to legitimate their ideology, values and norms in the society, which may result in social power abuse, dominance or inequality. The role of a critical discourse analyst is to understand and expose such abuses and inequalities. To this end, this paper is aimed at understanding and exposing the discursive construction of an anti-immigration Europe by the elites in the European Parliament (EP), through the example of Kristina Winberg, a member of the Sweden Democrats political party in Sweden and the political group of Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy in the EP. In the theoretical and methodological framework, the premises and strategies of van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach of critical discourse analysis make it possible to achieve the aim of the paper.
