To date, little understanding exists of how first-year students in professionally oriented higher-education (HE) programs (i.e., those that provide vocational education to prepare students for a particular occupation) experience their academic transition process. In the present study, we first argued how the constructs of academic adjustment and academic integration can provide complementary perspectives on the academic transition of first-year students in (professional) HE. Next, we examined what first-year students in professional HE contexts perceive to be the most important experiences associated with their academic transition process in the first semester of their first year of higher education (FYHE). To this end, we adopted the fundamentals of the critical incident technique and asked 104 students in a Flemish (Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) university college (which offers professional HE programs, such as nursing) to complete “reflective logs” with open questions at the start of the second semester of their FYHE, wherein they reflected on three critical academic experiences during their first semester. An inductive, cross-case content analysis of the collected narratives showed that students reported on nine themes of academic experiences, which relate to five adjustment themes (dealing with the organization of the study program, organizing study work, committing to the study, following class and taking notes, and processing learning content outside class) and four integration themes (feeling competent, feeling stressed, feeling prepared, and feeling supported). Further analyses showed that although some of the nine themes of academic experiences appear to be more important at different times in the first semester, they all seem to be meaningful throughout the whole semester.

This survey was the first one investigating opinions of veterinary students in Croatia towards companion animals and their welfare, with special reference to dogs and cats as the most popular companion animals in the European Union. The study included students of all six years of the integrated undergraduate and graduate veterinary medicine study programme in Croatia. First-year students were surveyed twice, before and after having attended the course on animal welfare. Student opinions were assessed on the basis of their mean responses to five-point Likert scale questions and frequency of responses to Yes/No/I do not know questions and ratio scale questions. Study results revealed students to have strongly positive opinions towards companion animals and their welfare. The majority of student statements did not differ significantly between the first and sixth study years or before and after having attended the animal welfare course in the first study year, mostly yielding a straight, non-fluctuating line. Students were not sure whether welfare of companion dogs and cats was compromised. Study results pointed to reliable and reasonable opinions of veterinary medicine students in Croatia towards companion animals and their welfare, as well as to the welfare issues these species may be facing nowadays.

The article presents the results of the study of an adaptation process of first-year students to the environment of the technical university. The actuality and novelty of this work are conditioned by current changes in the Russian system of higher professional education. The following problems of adaptation are pointed out as typical ones: lack of knowledge of the specifi cs of social interaction at the university in students; inadequate conceptualizations about organization of the educational process at the higher school; an external and mixed career motivation in the fi rst year’s students. A diversifi ed socio-cultural university environment is being described as a factor contributing to acceptance of the social role of «student» at the emotional level. At the same time, forming the cognitive components of the «student» role takes place not earlier than 5-6 weeks of the study at university. The results of this research have shown the necessity of including of adaptation training into the educational process for fi rst-year students.

In this study, the difference in the number of initial credits between incoming transfer and first-year students entering a land grant university in a professional education program was examined (N = 488). A multivariate analysis of variance revealed that transfer students transferred significantly more total credits and more credits that counted toward degree programs than did first-year students. Undergraduates who had graduated from small high schools transferred more credits and more credits that counted than did those from large high schools. However, first-year students transferred a significantly higher percentage of total credits that counted toward the degree programs than did transfer students. Implications for advisors, institutions, and policy makers are discussed.

This paper describes the actual problem of organizing the process of professional education of students in applied problems in their specialty. The problem is considered from two aspects: pedagogical (substantive) and technical, while the solution of learning problems is planned to be realized with the help of new information technologies. The article describes two study schemes based on two programming technologies: VBA and the Arduino platform, explores the advantages and disadvantages of each scheme, and provides examples of specific tasks and the results of a survey of first-year students, which study scheme is most suitable for professional education. The study involved first-year students of RTUFaculty of Electrical and Environmental Engineering, studying the educational course “Computer science”.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the model of pedagogical support of the adaptation process of students - freshmen of secondary professional education. The problem of students' adaptation is one of the most urgent not only from the point of view of psychological comfort of students, but also as a necessary condition for the development of professional competencies. In order to solve this problem successfully, it is necessary to identify the reasons that negatively affect the adaptation of students, and to create a model of pedagogical support for first-year students at the stage of adaptation. The structure of the model, its components are presented, the features of the freshmen adaptation process are revealed, the reasons that negatively affect the students' adaptation are identified, the relevance of studying this problem in secondary vocational education is emphasized. The author pays special attention to characterizing the specifics of students' adaptation in the system of secondary vocational education, increasing the efficiency of the existing model in modern conditions. The positive results obtained during the pedagogical experiment confirm that the success of the process of adapting first-year students to college requires qualified pedagogical support, which can be provided only with competent interaction, cooperation of all structures of the educational process.

The problem and the aim of the study. The integration of digital technologies into modern curricula in a foreign language supports the solution of tasks of higher professional education in terms of training a demanded and competitive specialist. The purpose of the work is to study the features of using methods and means of the augmented reality technology in the process of forming students' professional foreign language competence. Research methods. To obtain theoretical generalizations the analysis of scientific works on problems and prospects of using the augmented reality (AR) technology in the process of teaching a foreign language and on formation of the professional foreign language competence was used. AR tools (Google Lens, augmented reality browsers, WallaMe service) were mastered as part of the course “Virtual and Augmented Reality Technologies” Stepik platform (https://stepik.org/course/62107/syllabus). The study involved 40 first-year students of Vyatka State University of the training program “Teacher education”. In the experiment, the Pearson χ2 (chi-square) criterion was applied. Results. In the experimental group, when studying scientific terms, vocabulary and grammar of the foreign language, for communication and cultural exchange, the methods and means of the AR technology were used. Assessment of formation of the professional foreign language competence was carried out and statistically significant differences in the qualitative changes that occurred in the pedagogical system were revealed, χ2obs. 2 > χ2crit0.05 (7,14 > 5,99). In conclusion factors that make it possible to effectively use the augmented reality technology in foreign language classes (time regulation; alternation of activities, traditional methods and means with innovative ones; inclusion of physical activity breaks and elements of neuro-gymnastics; instruction on safe networking) are summarized.
