Stress, Hope, and Loneliness in Young Adolescents

A sample of 134 young adolescents attending a middle school responded to the Perceived Stress Scale, the Hopefulness Scale for Adolescents, and the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale. Correlational analyses indicated that higher scores on stress were significantly associated with lower scores on hope (r = -.55) and higher scores on loneliness (r= .52). Unlike an earlier study with predominately ethnic minority adolescents, the present findings with predominately Euro-American adolescents supported the relationship proposed between stress and hope; the relationship proposed between stress and loneliness was supported.

The range of students ages are 18 – 24 years have a responsibility as students at college susceptible to stress even if exaggeration can trigger suicidal ideation.Suicide data for students aged 18-26 in America in 2016 reached 1,000 people/year, while in Indonesia the national death rate from suicide during the year of 2016 recorded 1,800 cases. Preliminary study results on 30 students: 45% think unable to continue life, 20% thought hopeless, 5% Think to harm themselves and 30% Have positive think to against stress. Objective: To determine the relationship of stress levels with suicide ideas in students. Research method used correlational quantitative research methods and purposive sampling techniques with a sample count of 250 respondents. Research instruments uses perceived stress scale valid (0.84) and reliable (Cronbach α 0.85) and Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (&gt;1.96) reliable (Cronbach α 0.97). Results found the highest stress levels in the moderate stress category (80.0%) and the majority of suicidal ide ideas have a minimum risk (77.2), and there is a link between stress and suicidal dealing with a p-value of 0.048. Further research related to the application of adaptive stress coping and the provision of social support to students.<p><strong>BAHASA INDONESIA </strong>Mahasiswa yang termasuk dalam rentang usia 18-24 tahun memiliki tanggung jawab sebagai pelajar di Perguruan Tinggi rentan mengalami stres berlebihan sehingga dapat memicu ide bunuh diri. Data bunuh diri pada mahasiswa usia 18-26 di Amerika pada tahun 2016 mencapai 1.000 jiwa/tahun sedangkan data di Indonesia, angka kematian nasional akibat bunuh diri selama satu tahun terakhir pada tahun 2016 tercatat sebanyak 1.800 kasus. Studi pendahuluan pada 30 mahasiswa didapatkan sebanyak 45% berpikir tidak sanggup melanjutkan hidup, 20% berpikir putus asa, 5% berpikir menyakiti diri dan 30% berpikir positif terhadap stres. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui hubungan tingkat stres dengan ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa. Menggunakan metode kuantitatif korelasional dan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling dengan jumlah sampel 250 responden. Instrumen penelitian yakni Perceived Stress Scale yang valid (0,84) dan reliabel (Cronbach α 0,85) dan Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire yang valid (&gt;1,96) reliabel (Cronbach α 0,97). Hasil penelitian didapatkan tingkat stres terbanyak pada kategori stres sedang (80,0%) dan tingkat ide bunuh diri dengan mayoritas memiliki risiko minimal (77,2), serta terdapat hubungan antara stres dengan ide bunuh diri dengan hasil p value 0,048. Abstract Objective: This study examined the differential impact of Hurricane Harvey on adolescent standardized Body Mass Index (zBMI), physical activity, diet, and perceived stress. Methods: Prior to Hurricane Harvey, 175 ethnic minority adolescents were recruited from an independent school district in Houston. Height and weight were directly measured. The School Physical Activity and Nutrition Questionnaire assessed diet and physical activity. Stress was assessed with the Perceived Stress Scale. High hurricane impact was classified as at least 1 affirmative response to house damage, rescue, displacement, or going without food, water, or medicine. Repeated measures such as ANCOVA models were developed to assess differences in zBMI, physical activity, diet, and stress between the hurricane impact groups. Regression models were used to assess stress as a mediator of the hurricane impact and zBMI change relationship. Results: Students who were highly impacted by the hurricane had a greater decrease in zBMI than those less impacted from pre-hurricane to 15 weeks post-hurricane (95% CI 0.02 to 0.25, p<0.05). Physical activity and diet did not differ by impact. Perceived stress at 3 weeks post-hurricane mediated the impact and zBMI change relationship (β=-0.04 95% CI -0.12 to -0.002). Conclusion: The decrease in zBMI among highly impacted students warrants further monitoring. Perceived stress, immediately following the hurricane, impacted student growth months later.

To examine the relationship of religion and perceived stress, 97 undergraduate college students responded to the Perceived Stress Scale, the Spiritual Well-being Scale, and the Intrinsic/Extrinsic–Revised scale during a period of extreme national stressors during Fall 2001, namely, the September 11th terrorist attacks, anthrax scare, and war in Afghanistan, in addition to the local stressor of pending final college examinations. Scores on the Perceived Stress Scale were negatively correlated to scores on Existential Well-being (–.66), Religious Well-being (–.43), and Intrinsic Religious Orientation (–.44). Age was unrelated to all variables. Both the quality (well-being) of students' religious experience and the orientation of that experience were related to their perception of stress.

It has been documented that elderly are more prone to psychological problems and depression is the commonest geriatric psychiatric disorders. In fact, the elderly in India face a multitude of psychological, social and physical health problems. In a cross-sectional study, it was found that in persons of 65 years and older, the perceived adequacy of emotional and tangible support was clearly associated with depressive symptoms. Aim and Objective: To study the relationship between Perceived Stress and Loneliness in Older People with and without Depression. Sample and Methodology: This study comprised of 60 (30 with depression and 30 without depression) participants of age 60 years or above. The sample was selected with purposive incidental sampling technique. Material used: Geriatric Depression Scale- 30, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and UCLA-loneliness scale were administered after taking consent from the participants. Results: Result shows the comparison of means between depressive (case-group) and non-depressive (control-group) as per the scores on Perceived Stress Scale and University of California Log Angeles Loneliness Scale. On UCLA-loneliness scale, the scores of depressive group were found to be statistically significant at 0.01 levels (t-value 19.547) in comparison to non-depressive group and on Perceived Stress Scale, the scores of depressive groups were also found to be statistically significant at 0.01 levels (t-value 14.716) in comparison to non-depressive group. Conclusion: In brief, the findings of the study show that perceived stress and loneliness are the contributory factors of depression. It has also been observed that depressed people perceive more stress, loneliness than non-depressed older people.

Young adolescents ( N=144; 66 boys, 78 girls), ages 12 to 14 years ( M=12.2, SD = .8), who reported lower scores on the Low Frustration Tolerance Beliefs instrument had higher scores on the Perceived Stress Scale and the Profile of Mood States Subscales of Depression and Anxiety.
