Precognitive experiences concerning consequent events have been hypothesized to be alterations in temporal perception. All such experiences ( n = 156) that contained the days, months and years for the experience and the event were included from a published data base. Only 40 cases met the methodological criterion of having a temporal discrepancy between the experience and the event of equal to or more than 4 days. For two subsamples (discrepancies of 4–14 days and 15 to 2,000 days), both parametric and non-parametric analyses showed intermediate strength (0.50) correlations between the global geomagnetic activity on the day of the experience and the activity that would occur during the two days before the actual event.

AbstractThe metazoan parasite assemblage of the head of 30 specimens of the Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) from the western Mediterranean Sea was analysed. Eight species of parasites were found, four mazocraeid monogeneans: Grubea cochlear (prevalence = 10%), Kuhnia scombercolias (59%), K. scombri (52%), Pseudokuhnia minor (86%); three didymozoid trematodes: Nematobothrium cf. faciale (21%), N. filiforme (41%), N. scombri (7%); and one laerneopodid copepod: Clavelissa scombri (7%). Results were compared with previously published data from 14 localities of the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, using non-parametric univariate and multivariate analyses, and the whole parasite fauna of S. colias was compared with that of the congeners (S. australasicus, S. japonicus and S. scombrus). Parasites showed to reflect the biogeographical and phylogenetic history of host. From a methodological point of view, the use of both non-parametric univariate and multivariate techniques proved to be effective tools to detect dissimilarities between parasite assemblages.

Abstract This study introduces an innovative approach to sizing a differential planetary gearbox for a counter-rotating open rotor application. An updated methodology is proposed for the design of maximum load capacity gears based on the power transmitted, durability and space-envelope requirements of the application. The reported methodology has been validated by comparing the results to published data, demonstrating a maximum difference of 0.6% in geometry. Parametric analyses have also been performed to assess the impact of the design assumptions on gearbox dimensional trends. The proposed methodology enables the assessment of the impact of the preliminary transmission system design on engine performance and general arrangement. The characteristics of the gearset lead to an unequal torque split between output shafts (i.e. the propeller shafts). Given the design assumptions made, the study indicates that valid torque ratios would lie between 1.1 and 1.33. The impact of the torque ratio on the size of the gearbox has been analysed for equal rotational speeds and for different speeds between the output shafts. The study established that the transmission system design needs to be considered prior to selection of the torque ratio at engine design level.

AbstractIt has long been debated whether visual processing is, at least partially, a discrete process. Although vision appears to be a continuous stream of sensory information, sophisticated experiments reveal periodic modulations of perception and behavior. Previous work has demonstrated that the phase of endogenous neural oscillations in the 10 Hz range predicts the “lag” of the flash lag effect, a temporal visual illusion in which a static object is perceived to be lagging in time behind a moving object. Consequently, it has been proposed that the flash lag illusion could be a manifestation of a periodic, discrete sampling mechanism in the visual system. In this experiment we set out to causally test this hypothesis by entraining the visual system to a periodic 10 Hz stimulus and probing the flash lag effect (FLE) at different time points during entrainment. We hypothesized that the perceived FLE would be modulated over time, at the same frequency as the entrainer (10 Hz). A frequency analysis of the average FLE time-course indeed reveals a significant peak at 10 Hz as well as a strong phase consistency between subjects (N=26). Our findings provide evidence for a causal relationship between alpha oscillations and fluctuations in temporal perception.

Abstract To enlarge our data base of chemically peculiar stars, we compiled published data concerning the He-weak and He-rich stars observed by high-resolution spectroscopy techniques during last decades. Twenty He-weak and 28 He-rich stars have been added to the data base. We have also distinguished roAp stars from stars previously identified as Ap stars. To deepen our knowledge on statistical overview of the abundance anomalies versus the physical parameters of stars, we compared our data with previous compilations. We applied statistical tests on our data and found interesting correlations for effective temperature and surface gravity for all type of stars and a few correlations for projected rotation velocity only for He-rich stars. Because of the lack of the data, we could not check whether being a member of binary system is affecting on chemical peculiarities of those stars.
