Sex Differences in Relationships among Anger, Depression, and Coping Strategies of Japanese Students

This study investigated sex differences in the relationships among anger, depression, and coping strategies. Undergraduate students, 77 men and 130 women, 3 not identified by sex, voluntarily participated. Participants made ratings on a self-report about anger, depression, coping strategies, and mental health. Analyses showed that women who reported themselves as angry tended to cope with stress by optimistic and active strategies, while women who reported themselves as depressed tended to cope with stress by withdrawn and passive strategies. Men who reported being depressed tended to select emotion-focused cognitive coping, while men who reported being angry selected no specific coping. Adoption of engaged emotion-focused coping strategies were related to mental health only for women.

AbstractComplex trauma exposure in childhood and/or adolescence is common and has repeatedly been linked to mental ill-health across the lifespan. While the correlates of complex trauma and mental health are well-studied in individuals up to middle adulthood, correlates in older adulthood, as well as potential mediators of this relationship, such as stress coping, are insufficiently studied. Therefore, this study aimed to (a) examine the mental health of Swiss older adults affected by complex trauma exposure in childhood and/or adolescence, in comparison to non-affected individuals; and (b) to examine the potential mediating role of coping strategies and coping self-perception. Data from N = 257 participants (complex trauma [CT] group: n = 161; Mage = 69.66 years, 48.4% female; non-complex trauma [nCT] group: n = 96; Mage = 72.49 years, 42.7% female) were assessed using self-report questionnaires and a clinical interview. The CT group presented with significantly more current and lifetime mental health disorders, more disadvantageous coping strategies, and significantly lower coping self-perception, compared to the nCT group. Mediation analyses revealed that maladaptive coping and coping self-perception were relevant mediators of the relationship between complex trauma exposure and psychopathology. Results suggest that complex trauma exposure in childhood and/or adolescence can have a lasting impact on mental health in later life and can be negatively associated with stress coping. Findings emphasize the relevance of a lifespan perspective in research and clinical practice for addressing consequences of complex trauma exposure.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on people’s lives globally. The outbreak in Saudi Arabia worsened when the number of cases and deaths rose in March and April of 2020, leading to a national lockdown. This study aimed to assess the factors associated with mental health symptoms in a sample of people residing in Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We conducted an observational cross-sectional study using an online survey distributed via social media, completed by 3032 respondents from all Saudi regions. We collected demographic data, illness history, and scores of validated self-report scales to assess mental health symptoms, intolerance of uncertainty, and coping strategies. Results In total, respondents indicated moderate to very severe symptoms during the pandemic as follows: 20.9% for depression, 17.5% for anxiety, and 12.6% for stress. Younger age, female gender, and history of mental illness were associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Intolerance of uncertainty and certain coping strategies (such as denial or self-blame) were associated with more severe symptoms. Conclusions Mental health is a key concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for the identified vulnerable groups. Agencies concerned with mental health during crises may use the studied associated factors of mental health symptoms to generate targeted policies or interventions.

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems in the elderly, but there is little consensus about the best way to assess depression in the aged. The relationship between the CES-D and the ZUNG self-report depression scales was investigated in seventy-eight elderly people with osteoarthritis (mean age 71). The correlation between the scales was r = .69, with the CES-D classifying 15 percent of the participants as depressed, as compared to 6 percent by the ZUNG. Psychological symptoms had the strongest relationship with overall depression scores on both scales. No sex differences were found on psychological items on either scale, but females reported more somatic symptoms on the ZUNG. People over age seventy-four reported more psychological symptoms than their younger counterparts.

Os cursos da área da saúde possuem extensa carga horária de estágios, aulas práticas, relatórios e trabalho de conclusão de curso. Há ainda, na área da Enfermagem, inerente desgaste relacionado ao contato direto com doenças e mortes que a futura profissão lhes ocasiona nos estágios em instituições de saúde. Isso torna o ambiente acadêmico envolto em sentimentos de grande ansiedade e estresse. Dessa forma, os estudantes podem apresentar níveis elevados de estresse que podem causar o adoecimento físico e psíquico e comprometer a saúde mental deles. Por essas razões, este trabalho, por meio de pesquisa quantitativa, tem o intuito de descrever a prevalência de estresse e as estratégias de coping utilizadas nos estudantes do curso de Enfermagem. Os instrumentos utilizados foram a aplicação de um questionário sociodemográfico, escala Nível de Estresse nos Estudantes (N.I.S.E.S.T.E) e o Inventário de Resolução de Problemas (I.R.P). O maior nível de estresse encontrado foi em relação à preocupação com os estágios (2,9) e preocupação com os exames (2,73). Os universitários utilizam estratégias de coping positivas como atitude de confronto e resolução de problemas (3,67) e atitude ativa de não inferências (3,37). O nível de estresse dos universitários é considerado médio pela utilização de estratégias de coping positivas, o que colabora para que o estresse não seja alto e prejudicial.   STRESS LEVEL AND COPING STRATEGIES FOR SENIOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS   ABSTRACT The health degree programs bear an extensive internship workload, practical classes, reports, and final paper. There is also, in Nursing degree, inherent physical wear related to personal contact to diseases and deaths that the student’s future profession causes during the internship in Health Institutions.  As a consequence, the academic environment is surrounded by stress and anxiety feelings. Accordingly, students may present high levels of stress and result in physical and psychological illnesses and jeopardize their mental health. Thus, this paper aims through quantitative research to describe stress relevance and coping strategies used by students at Nursing school. The instruments used were the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire, for College Undergraduate Stress Scale (CUSS), and Problem Solving Inventory (PSI). The highest level demonstrated was regarding internship (2,9) and concerns with exams (2,73). Students used positive coping strategies as confront attitudes and solving problems (3,67), and non-inference active attitudes (3,37). According to positive coping strategies, the student’s stress level was considered medium; it contributes so that stress will not be high and harmful.    Descriptors: Psychological Stress. Considering the importance of psychological variables on health-related processes, this study investigated the role of resilience and coping strategies in relation to health. The aim of this research was to explore the underlying association between these aspects for the better understanding of the effect of psychosocial variables on mental health in cancer. This information could lead to the design of adapted psychological interventions in cancer. Participants with different diagnosis of cancer were recruited (N = 170). They came from the Spanish Association Against Cancer of Biscay. Resilience was measured with the 10 items Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, coping with the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and mental health was measured as a global indicator through the SF-12 and the GHQ-12. A structural equation model (SEM) was conducted to test the effects between the constructs. Results showed that resilience and coping were significantly associated. Results reflected an absence of significant correlation between adaptive and disadaptive coping strategies. Resilience was the factor that most correlated with health outcomes (β = –.45, p < .001). However, disadaptive coping strategies did not correlate with resilience or mental health indicators. Findings in this study underscore the positive contribution of high levels of resilience and an adaptive coping on participants´ level of health. Disadaptive coping strategies did not reflect any positive relation with resilience or health indicators. Thus, promoting resilience and adaptive coping could be a significant goal for psychosocial and educational interventions in people with cancer.

Objective. It is estimated that 70% of individuals with factor VIII deficiency hemophilia who received blood products before 1985 are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The goal of the current study was to assess how adolescents with hemophilia cope with reminders of their HIV status, because adaptation is likely to have implications for these individuals' quality of life and adherence to safer sex recommendations. Methods. Participants included 297 HIV-positive adolescents with hemophilia who were recruited from 11 sites across the United States. Adolescents reported on the use and effectiveness of strategies for coping with reminders of their HIV status. Results. A significant degree of distress was reported in response to such reminders, with anger being the most commonly reported emotion. Although a wide variety of coping strategies had been tried, participants reported using resignation (80.9%), self-calming (78.8%), and distraction (76.4%) most frequently in their attempts to cope with reminders of HIV. Self-blame (3.6%), engaging in risky behaviors (22.2%), thinking about sex (25.4%), and drug/alcohol use (29.1%) were used least. These adolescents tended to rate more active cognitive and behavioral coping strategies (eg, cognitive restructuring, seeking social support, physical activity) as most effective, whereas passive strategies (eg, wishful thinking, blaming others) were reported to be least helpful. Those individuals who reported being distressed by reminders of HIV endorsed most of the coping strategies significantly more often than the nondistressed group, although ineffective strategies were commonly chosen. Sexually active adolescents were more likely than their abstinent peers to cope by thinking about sex, engaging in risky behaviors, or using alcohol and drugs. Conclusion. In this population of adolescents who have known their serostatus for several years, distress about everyday reminders of HIV appears to be associated with ineffective coping strategies.
