AbstractThis article presents a qualitative study of lifelong learning (LLL) requirements of university employees from the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). The main aim of the study was to gain understanding of young people expectations and attitudes towards LLL. Aims of the study included: identification of employees’ requirements in terms of LLL; identification of education activities and employee perception of university activities. Data for the study were gathered in individual interviews. The same, standardized openended questions were used in both institutions to allow comparison of the results. Interview questions concerned the willingness of participation in LLL, education forms, areas of education and perception of the university. The participants of the interviews were 24 young people from the WUT and BME. Research shows that there are no significant differences between Polish and Hungarian representatives who are eager to learn and have many interests and positive features; however, they have high requirements and expectations. This research will allow to prepare informative and effective LLL universities’ strategies.

An important component of some psychological therapies is the use of clients’ values to motivate behaviour change. Values are understood to be developed during childhood and adolescence but there has been limited exploration of how young people experience values and their function across contexts. This study aimed to explore adolescents’ understanding of the concept of ‘values’ and to elicit their experiences of values. Semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted with 11 adolescents aged 12–17 years. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes. Young people were readily able to discuss the meaning of ‘values’ and their own personal values. Three main themes were identified: (1) what values are (in general, and specific to themselves), (2) where values come from (relationships, education, growing up), and (3) why values are important (prioritising/decision making, reflecting on values is helpful). The adolescents in this study demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the meaning, origins and functions of values. The results suggest young people may welcome and benefit from opportunities to discuss their values, including in therapy.

After several years of discussions on the future shape of higher education in Poland, both at the systemic and institutional level, on July 20, 2018, "The Law on Higher Education and Science," from now on referred to as the Law, was enacted. Together with a package of ordinances, this regulation broadened the autonomy of universities in terms of organization and management while substantiating the importance of their accountability. Strengthening the rector's authority resulted in a change in the perception of universities as dispersed organizations (Weick, 1976) towards compact organizations (Brunsson and Sahlin-Andersson, 2000). The authors noticed that the concept of the university, in line with the letter and spirit of the Law, does not pay due attention to the relations between university employees. Therefore, the article aims to present a proposal to implement the elements of the turquoise organization concept (Laloux, 2015), which is more and more often described in the scientific literature - and at the same time evokes extreme emotions - into an academic institution. The article indicates the unused, in the authors' opinion, possibilities of organizational and management changes created by the Law and describes selected features of the turquoise organization, relating them to an academic institution. It also compares the characteristics of a traditional university, entrepreneurial, and a university with a shade of turquoise. The research part analyzes interviews with deliberately selected employees of the Gdańsk University of Technology. During individual conversations, they expressed their opinions on new organizational and management solutions proposed by the article's co-author. In summary, an attempt was made to answer the question formulated in the title.

The Delft Method is a so-called 'natural' method: the material corresponds as much as possible to the way in which people learn their first language. Characteristic properties of the material are: 1) integral presentation of the basic grammar at the beginning of the course, 2) presentation of a large and well-selected vocabulary, 3) complex lexical and grammatical exercises, 4) constant feedback, 5) absence of grammatical terminology. The Delft Method, as used at Delft University of Technology, is meant for students aged about 18, has a very high tempo and presupposes a lot of independent student activity. The course material is also used by students outside the university, coming from a much younger age category, having a considerably lower level of education and proceeding at a slower rate. A first comparison of the results shows that the method is natural enough to be successfully used by very heterogenous groups. Differences in the time used can be explained partly by differences in experience in studying: in this view people trained in studying learn a second language faster than could be expected ?by nature'.

Purpose: The main objective of the study was to assess employee satisfaction at the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz. Specific objectives included areas of employee satisfaction, with regard to the assessment of the opportunities for professional development, job motivation and satisfaction, the opinions on the changes necessary to be undertaken at the University to improve job satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach: The evaluation study was conducted using a survey questionnaire, which was distributed to the employees by the means of an electronic questionnaire via the Limesurvey system, a traditional paper questionnaire, available at the University's lodges, and in a downloadable version available via the INTRA network. Findings: The study showed that the respondents are satisfied, among others, with their professional development at the university, the possibility of using their abilities or competences, and their achievements. Practical implications: The study also showed that the respondents are satisfied with the opportunity to acquire knowledge, new skills and self-fulfillment. In this group of questions, the university employees surveyed rate employment stability the lowest. For 22.32% of the respondents it is insufficient while for 22.03% it is sufficient. Originality/value Satisfaction testing is a useful tool for streamlining organization and increasing employee satisfaction.

Debates exist about the separation of the academy and the practicum. The purpose of this study is to explore how its findings may contribute to this discussion. The unique pedagogies of the university and practice are explored and consideration is given to whether practice educators hold an intermediary role. A qualitative study of an undergraduate programme in England using thematic analysis was undertaken once ethical approval was given. Individual interviews and focus groups were used. A total of 48 participants were interviewed at two different points in time (2008 and 2011-2012). Although this is a limited small scale study not susceptible to generalisation it may be able to provide an analytic generalisation, which may be replicable with further studies. The findings indicated practice educators struggled to act as a bridge because the academy and the practicum have conflicting and competing signature pedagogies. The contribution of this study is to the contemporary discussion on the SWRB changes and models such as Frontline.

Abstract Background This study emerges as a response to the lack of youth perspectives when it comes to discussions about access to and experiences of health and social services in rural areas. It subsequently contributes to the literature by positioning young people at the centre of this debate, and by taking a more holistic approach to the topic than is typically the case. Specifically, based on the idea that a good life in proper health for young people may be contingent on notions of care that are bounded up in multi-layered social and spatial environments, the aim of this study was to explore what characterises ‘landscapes of care’ for rural youth. Methods In this qualitative study, the participants included young people and professionals residing in five diverse areas across the northern Swedish ‘peripheral’ inland. Individual interviews (16 in total) and focus group discussions (26 in total) were conducted with 63 youth aged 14–27 years and with 44 professionals operating across sectors such as health centres, school health, integration units, youth clinics and youth clubs. Following an emergent design and using thematic analysis, we developed one main theme, ‘landscapes of care and despair’, comprising the two themes: ‘(dis)connectedness’ and ‘extended support or troubling gaps’. Results The findings illustrate how various health-promoting and potentially harmful aspects acting at structural, organisational and interpersonal levels contributed to dynamic landscapes characterised simultaneously by care and despair. In particular, our study shows how rural youths’ feelings of belongingness to people and places coupled with opportunities to participate in society and access practical and emotional support appear to facilitate their care within rural settings. However, although the results indicate that some in the diverse group of rural youth were cared for and about, a negative picture was painted in parallel. These aspects of despair included youths’ senses of exclusion and marginalisation, degrading attitudes towards them and their problems, as well as recurrent gaps in the provision and practices of care. Conclusions To gain a more comprehensive understanding about the health of rural youth, this study highlights the benefits investigating ‘care-ful’ and ‘uncaring’ aspects bounded up in dynamic and multi-layered landscapes.

Recent developments have seen a significant increase in the number of educational videos being made, mostly for use as a resource in a range of educational levels and different specializations. Indeed, currently, many universities either provide videos as supplementary resources or, indeed, offer entire courses as online learning materials. The qualitative study this paper presents was conducted to answer the following questions: “How have educational videos (lectures/tutorials) published on YouTube affected the university students’ studies at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels?” and “would it be better to upload these types of videos onto a university website?” The aim was to explore the experiences of students from two universities (one a high- ranking university and one from a developing country) regarding online educational videos and to assess the extent to which these kinds of videos influence their studies. The data collection method used was individual interviews with students from two different universities to gather their perspectives, their opinions, and their aspirations regarding such videos. The results section analyzes and discusses the students’ varied opinions. Based on the research findings, several recommendations are made to develop a useable design to add videos to university websites. Finally, the research discussed how this study’s findings contribute during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research on transition to higher education and young people with disabilities has increased in recent years. However, there is still limited understanding of transition issues and how digital technologies, such as social media and mobile devices, are used by this group of students to manage these issues. This article presents the findings of an empirical study that addressed this matter based on young people’s views and experiences. The qualitative study was conducted in the context of a group of students with vision impairments transitioning to a New Zealand university. The findings draw from observations, a researcher diary, focus groups, individual interviews, and data from social media. The study shows that, like their non-disabled peers, the students actively engaged with interactive and collaborative digital technologies to make sense, individually and collectively, of different transition issues before, during and after the first academic trimester of their university journey.Research on transition to higher education and young people with disabilities has increased in recent years.
