Abstract The paper examines the role and place of green enterprises, green jobs and the environmentally sound activities of society in waste management, taking into account the waste management hierarchy with an emphasis on waste reduction and prevention. In the course of the work, a questionnaire was prepared on the role green enterprises, green jobs and the environmentally friendly activities of society play in the development of a waste management system. The TOPSIS method of multi-criteria analysis was used to assess these roles in the development of a circular economy, including in relation to a waste management system. Through the assessment of the roles of these green measures in the field of waste management, the results clearly show that the most effective of the selected alternatives in the circular economy model in the field of separate collection and recycling of waste can be achieved via measure exercised by green enterprises, followed by green jobs and finally – the role of environmentally sound activities taken by the public, which play an important role as well.

A continuously growing population and their migration to urban centers consequently leads to waste expansion. The rapidly increasing quantities of waste generated in the cities affect way of human life, environment and planet. Hence, the necessity for smarter, safer, and greener places have never been more urgent. The novel technologies, Internet of Things (IoT) particularly, holds the potential to better manage waste and recycling. The IoT-driven waste management systems positively influence achieving the vision of smart green cities. This article analyzes the role of smart and safe IoT-powered waste management system, highlights its benefits, and possibilities of implementation and evaluation. It is expected that the IoT-based waste management system will deal successfully with an increasing amount of diverse types of waste and through the realization of a smart green city vision will resolve numerous problems related to human health and environmental contamination.

Sanitation workers are the backbone of the public hygiene and waste management system. Despite providing an essential public service, their work is often unrecognised. A majority of the workers too are unaware of the social security and welfare schemes instituted by both the Central and State governments for their wellbeing, which prevents them from availing the benefits such as pension, differently-abled and education and women welfare assistance, among others. This document furnishes the details of the social security and welfare schemes implemented by the Central and State governments, the eligibility criteria and benefits, and how sanitation workers can access them.

High obsolescence rate and end-of-life of electronic equipment resulting in high generation of electronic waste remains the biggest challenge with use of ICT in higher institutions. This study evaluated and developed an environmentally sound E-waste management system for higher institutions in Rivers State. The study employed research surveys in data acquisition through questionnaires, interviews and observation. Hypotheses were postulated to test areas of interest. Study indicated that institutions generate a reasonably amount of electronic/ICT wastes that are poorly managed. Desktop computers, printers, laptops, UPSs, old CRT monitors, and printer cartridges are the majority generated and available E-waste in storage in these institutions. Results revealed that the level of awareness on hazardous nature of E-waste among the sampled population was significant. The level awareness on E-waste recycling among sampled population was also significant. There are no accurate records or inventory of ICT equipment procurement and E-waste generation and disposal in the institutions. Policies and programs on source reduction E-waste segregation and handling, facilities for E-waste recovery, recycling and reuse are practically not available in the institutions. The study concluded that there is no proper management and disposal of electronic/ICT waste in higher institutions in Rivers State. Significant numbers of respondents expressed the need for the institutions to establish an integrated electronic/ICT waste recycling center. An Integrated E-waste management system that will not only address the current poor E-waste management practices in the institutions but also achieve environmentally sound management of E-wastes in the institutions has been developed in the study.

The main components of a modern waste management system generally include production, collection, separation, recycling and disposal. Separation, processing and recycling may occur at any stage of waste stream management. Design and implementation of a comprehensive sustainable waste management system require consideration of different waste characteristics in the region. Today’s humanity has been subjected to some form of consumerism. Lowering the quality standards for all types of goods and products, reducing, lowering some standards for quality control of goods, lacking serious quality control over products, increasing population, increasing consumer demand, diversifying goods, fashionable packaging, people’s desire to buy product. Stylish and thousands of said and untold indices result in consumerism and the consequence of producing millions of tons of different types of waste that are produced on a daily basis.

The aim of the article is to present the issues of the waste management system supported by logistic activities. The main emphasis was laid on the role of the systemic approach in the waste flow management concept. The article presents theoretical foundations related to the concept of reverse logistics, defines the waste flow directions in the waste management system and discusses the waste disposal chain.
