Integration as a Tool of Destination Management - The Case of Rural and Rural Fringe AreasIt is well known that the organizational structure of the Slovenian tourism industry is changing. Tourist companies are merging, but unfortunately only a few companies empowered their capital structure and market position, so in a way we can talk about an oligopoly. The situation does not favor rural and rural fringe areas, where an underdeveloped tourism economy cannot represent a solid source of income for many tourist farms and other tourist companies. Integration is a scientifically and professionally proven method for empowering businesses. Integrative destination management, which provides the tool for tourist destinations development, aims at sustainable tourism where the community collectively develops and runs the tourism economy. This paper examines the possibilities for the development of business integration as a basis for the successful implementation of destination management in the Mislinja Valley. A survey has been conducted, where two thirds of the tourist companies in the area were investigated in relation to the destination management and tourism opportunities in the area. Analysis shows that the business environment accepts the idea of integration as a tool for empowering the regional tourism industry, however only interest integration appeares to be acceptable at this time.

The study is devoted to a problem that has not been sufficiently studied in relation to the field of education, namely, the problem of project-based learning in the digital environment. To solve this problem, education is considered as a contemporary phenomenon that allows the use of IT technologies and thus expands the opportunities of students both in terms of their mobility and the access to the educational process from anywhere in the world, and in terms of attracting intellectual, creative and technical resources. It was supposed that project-based learning in the digital environment has considerable prospects for students to gain professional skills, develop creative ideas, and introduce research methods into the business environment. As an example, the sociolinguistic research in the field of tourism was used. The project study conducted by the students is due to the growing interest of Russians in traveling around the country, but at the same time it showed the unpreparedness of the advertising and information base and proved that appealing to the promotion of domestic tourism, specialists should understand that today it is necessary to transform approaches to advertising tours and excursion routes. Thus, the implementation of joint student projects in the digital environment, covering sociolinguistic research and further work of specialists in the tourism industry, carried out on their basis on information and advertising support for tourist and excursion activities, will allow implementing project-based training as an important part of the practice-oriented educational process. In such projects, interdisciplinary interaction and inter-university cooperation can be implemented.

Due to the continuous increase of the tourism industry, tourism destinations need to be managed under a sustainable framework, with the main aim of minimizing the adverse effects caused by tourism flows. In recent years, several attempts have been made to measure those effects and value the level of sustainability of every destination. A clear example of this is the European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS). In the paper, the results are presented of a project which aimed to test indicators of sustainable tourism in coastal destinations of Catalonia, Istrian Region, and Tuscany Region. The results of 33 collected indicators are available on the online platform of the project INTERREG MED MITOMED+. During the first year, in every category of indicators (economic, social-cultural and environmental) only some indicators were collected, which was expected because different regions apply different methodologies. The collected data is the starting point that shows destinations how the indicator can be obtained and what its purpose is. Furthermore, collected data can help local and regional tourism stakeholders to prevent factors of risk, to take decisions and to improve the implementation of policies for sustainable maritime and coastal tourism development in the Mediterranean area.

Tourism has turned out to be one of the most affected areas of socioeconomic activity due to the spread of the pandemic. Restrictions on the movement of citizens practically brought down international tourism and caused serious damage to the national economies of those countries in which income from tourism activities made a significant contribution to the country's GDP. Efforts to create sustainable tourism systems have been destroyed, and the theory of sustainable tourism development itself needs to be updated. The relevance of this study is due to the fact that the tourism industry, which is experiencing the deepest decline in the history of tourism development, should receive new tools necessary for its restoration and further sustainable development. The study used monographic, statistical, comparative and other methods of scientific research, which made it possible to identify and formulate the author's proposals to expand the concept of sustainable tourism development. It is quite obvious that after the pandemic, world tourism will recover, but this will be a period of tourism development completely different from the previous stages. In the course of the research, the features of tourism development in the context of the socalled new reality were investigated. It is shown that the safety of tourism in terms of compliance with sanitary and epidemiological standards has become one of the important parameters in assessing the competitiveness of tourist destinations. As a result of the study, a proposal was formulated and substantiated that the concept of sustainable tourism development, in addition to economic, environmental and social components, must be supplemented with an information and communication component, as the most important attribute of the global digitalization of society.

PurposeThis paper questions the present state of the world's tourism industry and advocates the need for an approach where quality assumes greater importance than quantity.Design/methodology/approachThis paper provides an analysis of the tourism industry's recent evolution while trying to identify reasons for its decline which amongst others, include security issues and economic crisis.FindingsIn developing a sustainable tourism industry especially in these economically challenging times, we must learn to appreciate what is precious in our own lives and in our respective communities. This in turn will help us maintain and further explore the uniqueness of our tourist destinations. The greatest threat to leisure and tourism (and to a lesser extent to business travel) is the fact that travel has lost a good deal of its romance and enchantment due to a global approach to its development. In the rush for efficiency and quantitative analysis the travel and tourism industry may have forgotten that each traveller has unique expectations.Originality/valueSustainable tourism is not only about how a tourist location adapts but also about what a city or destination accomplishes when re-discovering its inner essence and then promoting it.

World and domestic experience shows that it is very effective to use the method of "tourist destinations" for the development of complex programs or strategies for tourism (1). As a result of numerous studies, a fairly coherent system of describing a "tourist destination" has been developed, allowing you to have a fairly comprehensive idea of both the product itself and the conditions for its receipt, attractiveness and related products. At the same time, the task of entrepreneurs, investors and representatives of regional authorities responsible for the tourism industry is to determine the prospects for the development of a particular tourist product or route. To do this, it is necessary to solve the problem of determining the investment attractiveness and prospects of a particular tourist destination, determine its competitiveness in relation to those available in this region and make a decision on the priority and expediency of investing in this direction of the tourism industry. This article is an attempt of the authors to formalize the process of determining the priority and promising development of regional tourism directions in the region, using the example of the tourism industry of Udmurtia. The basis is the preparation of a passport of a tourist destination and the use of expert assessments.

Despite the important roleof local entrepreneurs for sustainable tourism, the process of starting up small tourism enterprises remains unclear. The current study is aimed at constructing a start-up model of small tourism enteprise, particularly homestay.Qualitative method was adopted. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentary. Interviews were made with 6 homestay owners in three tourist destinations in West Lombok Regency. Data was recorded and then analysed using content analysis. The study constructs a start-up model consisting of two phases, orientation and starting phases. The orientation phase elaborates the process of entrepreneurial opportunity recognition, business capital preparation, and  starting preparation. The starting phase describestrial and error process regarding product creation, resource allocations, finance management, and marketing strategies. In the starting phase entrepreneurs have todeal with business competition and business uncertainties. The succes in undertaking the starting phase can lead an entrepreneur into a further business development. But,the fail in going through the starting phase can lead into bankruptcy and/or the situation in which the entrepreneurs have to re-start their business again from the beginning. The study results provide reference for community empowerment, bring theoretical and managerial impacts, and create gap for a further research. Keywords : homestay start-up, orientation phase, starting phase, tourism industry, Lombok

South Africa has one of the largest and most developed tourism markets in Southern Africa. Consequently, the sector's performance, therefore, has implications on the regional tourism market. In the advent of COVID-19, South Africa emerged as one of the global and regional epicentres of coronavirus infections. In March 2020, South Africa was one of the countries that adopted hard lockdown measures to control the pandemic. The consequent sealing off of the country’s ports brought the tourism industry to a sudden halt. This study is aimed at examining the impact and potential reopening strategies that the tourism industry can adopt in South Africa. The study is based on critical document analysis of survey reports from South Africa’s National Department of Tourism, Stats SA, Google Mobility and other authoritative, relevant sources. The study concludes that the pandemic had a devastating impact on various sectors of the tourism economy. The most devastating industries include the aviation, maritime, special events, accommodation and attraction sectors. The sudden halting of the tourism industry threatened conservation efforts and the business viability of many tourism establishments. Consequently, public and private airlines were liquidated or placed under business administration with far-reaching implications for various destinations and travel sectors. The study recommends a well-engineered financial aid package for the region's tourism industry, reduced tourism levies and taxes backed by the adoption of stringent health protocols to help the industry recover and make travel appealing and attractive again. A robust vaccination program must support such efforts.

Tourism is an industry, very focused on economic growth, with significant negative environmental and social impacts. Consequently, the tourism industry faces major challenges related to sustainability. Sustainable innovation is a tool that contributes not only to increased business competitiveness but can also play an important role in mitigating the negative impacts that such growth can generate. Recognizing the opportunity that this innovation can have in the tourism industry, this chapter analyzes the state of the art and systematizes the knowledge and evolution of the academic debate about this relationship between sustainable innovation and tourism from 1992 to 2018. This chapter indicates that sustainable tourism is focused on seven major areas of research and predominantly analyzed through quantitative methods. It is still an embryonic topic with scarce research done in several areas, such as the monitoring of its impacts, the effects felt by the communities of tourist destinations, and the impacts that sustainable innovation may have on other tourism subsectors.
