The city has traces of human civilization from time to time with various phenomena that occur. As time goes by, the existence of Third Place in Jakarta remains limited. The activities among those Third Places tend to be less interactive. Most of Third Places aim to address the concept of green and open space, but it fails to communicate its crucial purposes as platfrom activities for the community. In this modern era, the concept is change necessary where it accomodates public needs and no longer be depicted a mere open space. Krendang needs a facility to accommodate motherhood and children activities as the third place. As the people become more individualistic and don't want to socialize, it is more difficult to find leisure and creativity facilities. Motherhood Community and Social Market in Krendang was designed to facilitate the activities of mother and children in the middle of densely population in Krendang, Tambora, West Jakarta.

Currently, the population growth is growing very rapidly resulting in rapid growth of the needs of settlements. The population growth that is not proportional to the availability of land and the income level of the lower middle class resulted in the emergence of illegal settlements and slums and are on land that is inconsistent with the city spatial plan for example on the edge of the river. This condition causes the decreasing quality of life of the people, especially in urban areas, destroying the environment and the spatial arrangement of the city. Medan city is one of the cities that there are many slums. One of the slums in the city of Medan is Kampung Badur located in Hamdan Village Medan Maimun District. The condition of the slums and the low economic level and the location of Kampung Badur located in the city center became the main problem in this area. Therefore, a solution is needed to solve problems in the area by making Kampung Badur an area that provides decent occupancy for occupancy and facilities that could be enjoyed together. The solution to this problem is to re-arrange Kampung Badur and develop potentials in the area. For example, Kampung Badur area which is right on the edge of the river becomes a potential in the design. So that the solution that can be applied is to develop Kampung Badur into Mix-Use Waterfront with a mix-use concept such as residential, public facilities and public open space to be enjoyed by residents Kampung Badur itself and by the people of Medan City.

The existence of open space in densely populated settlements in the city of Jakarta has a very important role in its function as controlling the environment, microclimate, sosial community, and economy of the population. Until now, the total area of open space in Jakarta is still below 30% as a requirement mandated by Law number 26 of 2007 due to a number of reasons, one of which is the very dense land used as a residence. in the condition of the lack of available green open space, the people living in dense settlements are not yet fully aware of the importance of the existence and efforts of structuring green open space around their settlements in supporting their daily lives. The community service program aims to increase knowledge as well as public awareness of the importance of green open space within inhabited residential areas. To achieve this goal, a consultation and pilot method for structuring green open space is used, which begins with counseling, discussion, and a pilot on how to organize green open space in densely populated areas in Meruya Selatan Village. The results obtained through the community service program are increased awareness and enthusiasm of the community to organize the open space around the residence they inhabit.

In one of the winding dells of the Arcadian uplands a little white-walled city slept sunnily on a knoll beside the riverbed, where the thread of the summer stream curled slowly among the rushes. The sun stood blazing in the south, and the people of the city lay resting peacefully in patches of shade under the temple roofs or under the colonnades by the fountain. The market-place was silent; a few shopkeepers dozed under their booths, where their merchandise was sheltered from the heat of the summer noon. The narrow streets, winding among the blank white walls of the houses, were deserted. On a small hill above the market-place stood the temple of Zeus, with its gables fronting east and west. In the shade of the eastern gable two boys were standing and straining their eyes into the glare of the sun to watch the white track which climbed the hills before them. Both of them at once saw a little cloud of dust rise on the crest of the hill, and the form of a man running. ‘The runner!’ they shouted, and their shout woke the cool shadows along the northern colonnade of the temple. One after another, men came out and joined them, and the elder boy darted down the temple steps, across the market-place, and down one of the narrow streets crying all the while ‘The runner! The runner!’ The town woke from its sleep; shopkeepers, porters, nobles, men, women, and children gathered on the temple steps before the runner had reached the bottom of the valley; and as he climbed the short ascent, and ran through the open city gate, an eager crowd awaited his arrival. He reached the open space in front of the temple. His face and hair were covered with dust and sweat, as were his sinewy legs and arms. He stood gasping for a moment to get breath for his announcement to the silent eager crowd. Then in a hoarse but exultant voice he cried, ‘Stymphalians, Hagesias won the mule-car race yesterday morning!’

Pokhara valley is located in western Nepal at an elevation of about 3,000 feet above sea level. It was declared a municipality in 1959 with an estimated population of 4,000. Since then, the city of Pokhara has faced tremendous growth pressure. Its population reached 200,000 in 2005 - a 50-fold increase in population in 46 years. Land prices have increased at a much higher rate than the population. Most of the arable land has been replaced by roads and buildings. There is a concern that Pokhara is facing growth pressure similar to that of Kathmandu Valley, as described by Pradhan and Perera (2005). As land prices soar, there is tremendous pressure on public land for development, and the municipality has not been able to maintain open space for public use. Pokhara has established few sites as public parks, and most of these parks are small parcels of land fenced for protection from cattle and water buffalo with few or no plants/ flowers and other resources for leisure time activities. There are no plans for the development of a nature park or a green space area where people could see, feel and touch ornamental plants and flowers. Furthermore, the city lacks an open green space where people could walk, jog or spend leisure or free time. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/hjsa.v3i0.1494 Himalayan Journal of Sociology and Anthropology Vol.III, Sept. 2008 p. 34-45

Based on the concept of a livable and global age-friendly city, pavements are a public facility that the city should provide to the people. Appropriate pavements will be beneficial for the people, particularly for good quality of life for the elderly to move around in the city. This study explored the behaviour of the elderly in the use of pavements and the problems confronted. The study also evaluated the value of the pavement walking area as it reflected the benefits of pavements to the elderly by applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). During March-May 2017, data were collected using interviews with 601 elderly living in Bangkok. The study indicated that the main problem for senior citizens regarding their use of pavements was from being disturbed by motorbikes riding on the pavements. The average value of pavement for the elderly was about THB 160 (USD 5.30) per person per year. Thus, the benefits of pavements to the elderly in Bangkok was approximately THB 158 million (USD 5.2 million) per year. Thus, policy makers should make proper budget allocations for elderly-friendly pavement management and seriously address the problems confronting the elderly in using pavements, to maximize the usefulness of pavements not only for the elderly but also for the public and to support a sustainable urban development.
