This study is entitled ?? Semiotic Analysis of Samsung S8: The Travel Guide Video Advertisement.’’ the discussion of this study focuses on the verbal and visual signs. This study aimed at identifying the meaning of verbal sign and analyzing the visual sign contained in the Samsung S8: The Travel Guide Video Advertisement. The method of conducting data in the study was documentation method. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method according the theory of meaning by Leech (1983) to analyze the meanings of verbal signs and the theory of visual sign communication proposed by Dyer (1993) which is aimed to analyze the elements of visual sign. The result of the analysis shows verbal signs in the spoken implied meanings that want to be conveyed by the narrator. And the visual sign in the video advertisement has the elements which included some categories such appearance, manner, activity, props, setting, and analyzing photograph or images.

COVID-19 has been reported to be risen in numbers of infected cases and deaths. The massive report by media and social network which focus on the spreading and infection may affect not only physical health but also individual’s and general population’s mental health, isolation and stigma. To eradicate COVID-19-related stigma and discrimination perpetuated by both individual and group of people, WHO exhibits some anti-stigma campaign posters. This study employs qualitative method to acquire deep investigation of meaning and to involve the social context. Thus, by using Roland Barthes’s semiotic approach, analyzing signifiers and signifieds, this study was aimed to unmask both denotative and connotative meanings of the stigma embed within the six health campaign posters of COVID-19 by Southeast Asia WHO. The analysis was focused not only on the verbal sign of posters (linguistic text), but also its relation to their visual sign (imagery messages). From the analysis of the two sign systems of posters, the result shows that the six posters connote acts of discriminatory behaviours, stigmatization, stereotype and blaming. Through the posters, WHO propagates people to work together to fight COVID-19 and to bring out the best humanity, to have better awareness and positive attitudes and appeals governments, citizens, media, key influencers of communities to have a role in preventing and to stop stigma surrounding in South-Asia and specifically in Indonesia which becomes the target of the poster viewers during the pandemic. Those messages are connoted through different font colors and sizes and the illustration on each poster.

This study is aimed to identify the types of compound nouns and analyze the meanings of compound nouns conveyed on The Jakarta Post website. Two theories applied in this study, the theory of compound proposed by Katamba and the theory of meaning proposed by Palmer. Eight articles from The Jakarta Post website were chosen as the data source. The selected articles are related to technology, lifestyle, and business from December 2020 until February 2021. Documentation method and note-taking technique used in collecting the data. The collected data was analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method and triangulation technique. Meanwhile, in presenting the data analysis, this study used formal and informal methods. The result shows that all types of compound nouns based on the theory applied are found in the data source. The types are: noun + noun, adjective + noun, and preposition + noun. In terms of meaning, there are transparent and opaque meanings.

The reseach objectives are to know what symbols are performed in Lariangi dance and what meaning are conveyed in the symbols performed in Lariangi dance. This study used descriptive qualitative method to take information. The writer obsereved the experiences’s house in Liya village and took some informations from them and interviewed and documentated by using recorded and camera. This research also took the datum from some books, articles, internet which associat with the symbols in Lariangi dance in Wakatobi Southeast Sulawesi. The research resulted the part of symbols in Lariangi dance start from dress, accessories, movement of the dance and the songs of Lariangi dance. The result of this study were the symbols performed and the meaning are conveyed in Laariangi dance. The symbols performed in Lariangi dance and their meanings are found in four part. First the symbols found in dress there are six namely Kombo Monihi, Kombo Meha, Punto/Wuray Nibelo Biru, Laka/Wuray Meha, Kambero, and Lenso/Saputangan symbolyzes sweat rag of King Buton. The second, there are eight symbols and their meaning found in accessories, namely Panto and Pintoru, Hepupu/Konde, Kamba Konde, Toboy Kamba, Hebindu/Sangi-Sangi, Kalo, Naga,  Sekori Keponto Posusu symbolyzes degrees nobility. The third, there are four symbols found in movement of Lariangi dance namely, Hematu kepooli le..le, Pajogi/Nyibing/Ngifi,  Nabu/Tau,  and Lariangi symbolyzes Lighting. The last is symbols found in song of Lariangi dance there are nine songs namely Mangu-Mangu, Ole-Ole,  Doumaraia, Denda Aule, Sailila, Waindi-Indi, Rongande, Jojongana, and Salatu symbolyzes as thankful to Allah SWT.

This article is entitled “Verbal and Visual Signs of Advertisement in National Geographic Traveller Magazine”.  The aims are to describe the meaning and function of verbal and visual signs and how their interrelations are. The source of the National Geographic Traveller Magazine from which the three advertisements are selected, these selections are due to advertisements present good combination of colors, pictures and word choices than another advertisement which also consist of verbal and visual signs. The research is done through library research with documentation method and observation technique was applied to collect the data, the qualitative method was used to analyze the data based on the theory of meaning and function by Leech, theory of signs by Chandler, and use of color by Cerrato. The result of the analysis shows that the advertiser tends to use conceptual meaning and informational function to deliver or give information to the readers about the product itself. The verbal and visual signs are related to one another, verbal sign as the part that describes what is meant by visual sign and the visual sign as the part that illustrates what is meant by the verbal sign. So, what is shown in the visual sign is appropriate with what is written in the verbal sign and vice versa.

Advertisement is "an announcement or news online, or in a newspaper, on television, or on a poster about something such as a product, event, or job to persuade and encourage people to be interested in the goods or services offered". Verbal and nonverbal are communication tools that humans use to interact, whether it's through messages, sounds, pictures, and gestures. . This study aims to analyse the verbal and non-verbal signs used in travel advertisements and to find out the meaning of those signs. Travel advertisements aim to promote tourist attractions or destinations to tourists who are going to make a trip to Bali. The data were taken from several travel websites. The data were collected by observation method and then analysed by descriptive qualitative method. The analysis started by analysing the verbal and non-verbal signs based on the theory of semiotic by Saussure (1893). The analysis of the meaning of the verbal and non-verbal signs was done by using the theory of meaning proposed by Barthes (1977). And the analysis of colors was done by using the theory of color term proposed by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of the research shows that travel advertisements provide information for readers or tourists who are going to travel in Bali about interesting places to visit, such as romantic spots for dinner or honeymoon and natural view for the ones who love nature and adventure. The colors displayed in the advertisement express the atmosphere that will be obtained by readers or tourists. The advertisements promote Bali as wonderful place to visit and travel package offers which interesting and affordable.

Tawa tasapo is one of the examples of oral tradition that persists in traditional medicine in Solok Regency. This research aimed to see linguistics meaning of language in tawa tasapo. The analysis was done by the application of Leech theory of meaning that divide meaning into seven types of meaning: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic meaning. This research used descriptive-qualitative method with simple mathematic to determine the finding of this research. After analyzing the data, it was found that connotative meaning and social meaning as the dominant used in this research. The result was influenced by Minangkabau and Islam culture.

This semiotic analysis using Peirce’s triadic theory to interpret the symbols contained in the lyrics and music video of Paramore entitled “Brick by Boring Brick”. The research applied descriptive qualitative method to reach the needed results. There are sixteen signs interpreted either in general interpretation or referred to fairy tales. By interpreted those signs we gain the intended message that the songwriter wanted to deliver, Those signs mentioned symbols like “Taste and smells” which meant the essence of the world. Also “Brick by boring brick” which referenced to the fairy tale of “Three little pigs” and fourteen more symbols interpreted in this research. The message which the songwriter tried to spread was for people to stopped dreaming a life just like in fairy tales which was always end in a beautiful ever-after and started learning to live in the reality. A life like in fairy tales are not real and better stopped trying to impress people and start improve instead.

Commisive is kind of speech acts that used by the speakers to commit themselves to some future course action. They express the speaker’s attention to do something on some future action. This study concerned on finding out types of commissive speech act used by characters in the movie John Wick Chapter 2, as well as analyzing the meaning of the utterances. This study applied the theory of pragmatics from Yule (1996) to find out the types of commissive speech act, theory of meaning from Thomas (1995) to analyse the implied meaning and supported by the theory of context of situation from Halliday and Hasan (1989). The data were collected by using observation method and analysed by descriptive qualitative method.  The finding is presented in formal and informal way. Our finding shows that there are four types of commisive speech acts which predominantly used by the characters in the movie John Wick Chapter 2, they are: refusal (12%), warning (48%), promise (12%) and threat (28%).    Keywords: commissive, speech act, utterance, meaning

Semiotic Analysis in William Blake Poems. The problem in this research is how to apply Riffaterre’s theory. This research focused on semiotic of Riffaterre’s theory in William Blake poems, titled The Sick Rose, My Pretty Rose Tree, and The Garden of Love. The method that used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The data that used in this research was a written record in the form of three poems by William Blake. Three poems in question were The Sick Rose, My Pretty Rose Tree, and The Garden of Love. The technique used to collect data in this research was the technique of reading log. The researcher used the Riffaterre’s theory to analysis the poems. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that poem The Sick Rose and The Garden of love depict of live before France Revolution occurred, and poem My Pretty Rose Tree describe about the author’s feeling to his wife.

This research deals with Semiotic Analysis of Kerja Adat Erdemu Bayu in Karonese. This research was aimed to find out the values and meanings contained in the Karo tribe's wedding ceremony so that people do not consider the ceremonial rituals as mere obligations and customs. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the video of the Karonese wedding ceremony on YouTube channel which uploaded on 07 May 2021 and also through interview from an elder who really understands the customs of the Karonese tribe, especially in wedding ceremonies. There were found 15 symbols, they are beka buluh (male’s hood), uis jongkit dilaki (male’s sarong), uis jujung-jujungen (veil), uis ragi barat (sarong), amak tayangen (bed mat), kalang ulu (pillows), perembah (long chloth, baby carrier), beras meciho (pure rice), naruh manuk (egg), sumpit (basket rice), uis nipes (traditional cloth), lampu terlong (oil lamp /lamp), kudin (cooking pot), manuk asuhen (hen), perkakas dapur (kitchen utensils) each of which has an interpretation in the form of advice, prayers and wishes for the bride and groom in living their domestic life.
