An analysis of the results of X-ray CT and MR-imaging was made in 46 patients aged from 13 to 78 years old. The patients were admitted to multifield hospitals in Kursk at the period from 2005 to 2015. The research included the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, mastoid and pyramid of the temporal bones and the brain. The study could be repeated with bolus contrast medium infusion. The condition of the patients was evaluated in dynamics at intervals of 5-7 days and these data was associated with clinical picture. The authors presents a complex of symptoms and an algorithm of differentiated X-ray diagnostics of diseases of the ENT organs and the main nosological forms of pyoinflammatory diseases of arachnoid membrane and substances of the brain.

The article presents a clinical case of a patient of the otorhinolaryngology department of the Samara Clinical Hospital No. 8 who had a new coronavirus infection. Complications were manifested by primary thrombosis of the orbital veins, facial veins, followed by the spread of the process into the pterygoid plexus, veins of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The study analyzes the dynamics of the clinical picture and compares it with the results of the postmortem examination. Vascular thrombosis of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses during X-ray examination can manifest itself as a decrease in pneumatization of the sinuses with possible minor exudation due to ischemic changes in the mucous membrane. Thrombosis developing with underlying COVID-19-associated coagulopathy can have different initial localizations and are a formidable complication with a high mortality rate. Patients who have undergone COVID-19 need to control the coagulogram not only during the illness, but also during the period of convalescence and early periods after recovery.

✓ Perfluorocarbon, a new tumor-seeking x-ray contrast agent, was injected into three rats with experimental brain tumors. After 1 to 3 days the rats were sacrificed, and the brains were removed and subjected to x-ray study. All showed dense radiopaque areas which correlated with the size and shape of the corresponding brain tumors. Conversely, none of the radiograms taken of the brain tumor in five rats receiving no perfluorocarbon (control animals) showed similar increased density. These findings suggest that perfluorocarbon may serve a useful role as a contrast medium for computerized tomography studies of brain tumors in man.

We describe a case of a 15-year-old girl who presented to our clinic with long-standing right-sided rhinorrhoea which was occasionally foul-smelling and blood-stained with no other symptom of note. She had been treated many times with antibiotics. On examination, a rhinolith was discovered impacted posteriorly in right nasal cavity with mucopurulent discharge. Plain X-ray and later CT scan of paranasal sinuses confirmed the diagnosis but it was found to be large in size with irregular shape like a ‘staghorn’. It was removed under general anaesthesia and she recovered uneventfully. We also describe the review of literature.

Abstract Rhinocerebral mycosis is an invasive fungal infection which occurs primarily in the paranasal sinuses and progresses to involve the brain and/or the orbit. It is commonly seen in immunocompromised individuals and can be most effectively treated if diagnosed early, when it is limited to the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses. Even though it is acceptable that surgical debridement in combination with antifungal therapy can lead to high rate of cure, the surgical approach for intracranial extension is still a subject of debate. Twenty-four cases of rhinocerebral mycosis managed at our institute are discussed, regarding presenting complaints and management.

Rhino-orbital-cerebral Mucormycosis also known as orbital zygomycosis. It is a life-threatening deadly complication in post covid patient presenting as pathological involvement of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses with extension into orbital cavity and intracranial compartment as a result of fungal infection caused by fungi in the order Mucorales, mainly Rhizopus oryzae. MATERIAL AND METHOD We present a case series of 5 patient who were biopsy/culture proven invasive rhino cerebral Mucormycosis in post covid-19 patient who were reviewed on MR imaging. MR imaging were recovered from PACS in PMCH Patna and the data was analyzed. RESULT Involvement of para nasal sinuses with adjacent fat standing was present in 100%, orbital involvement was seen in 80%, intracerebral involvement was seen in 60%, mastoiditis was present in 40% of the patient selected in our case series. CONCLUSION MR imaging is helpful in early diagnosis when there is involvement of nasal, paranasal sinus and varying degree of orbital and cranial extension and associated with varying complication

Metallic cobalt acts as an epileptogenic agent when placed on the brain surface of some experimental animals. The mechanism by which this substance produces abnormal neuronal discharge is unknown. One potentially useful approach to this problem is to study the cellular and extracellular distribution of elemental cobalt in the meninges and adjacent cerebral cortex. Since it is possible to demonstrate the morphological localization and distribution of heavy metals, such as cobalt, by correlative x-ray analysis and electron microscopy (i.e., by AEM), we are using AEM to locate and identify elemental cobalt in phagocytic meningeal cells of young 80-day postnatal opossums following a subdural injection of cobalt particles.

The advances in recent years in the microanalytical capabilities of conventional TEM's fitted with probe forming lenses allow much more detailed investigations to be made of the microstructures of complex alloys, such as ferritic steels, than have been possible previously. In particular, the identification of individual precipitate particles with dimensions of a few tens of nanometers in alloys containing high densities of several chemically and crystallographically different precipitate types is feasible. The aim of the investigation described in this paper was to establish a method which allowed individual particle identification to be made in a few seconds so that large numbers of particles could be examined in a few hours.A Philips EM400 microscope, fitted with the scanning transmission (STEM) objective lens pole-pieces and an EDAX energy dispersive X-ray analyser, was used at 120 kV with a thermal W hairpin filament. The precipitates examined were extracted using a standard C replica technique from specimens of a 2¼Cr-lMo ferritic steel in a quenched and tempered condition.

The paintings by the great Hungarian master Mihaly Munkacsy (1844-1900) made in an 8-9 years period of his activity are deteriorating. The most conspicuous sign of the deterioration is an intensive darkening. We have made an attempt by electron beam microanalysis to clarify the causes of the darkening. The importance of a study like this is increased by the fact that a similar darkening can be observed on the paintings by Munkacsy’s contemporaries e.g Courbet and Makart. A thick brown mass the so called bitumen used by Munkacsy for grounding and also as a paint is believed by the art historians to cause the darkening.For this study, paint specimens were taken from the following paintings: “Studio”, “Farewell” and the “Portrait of the Master’s Wife”, all of them are the property of the Hungarian National Gallery. The paint samples were embedded in a polyester resin “Poly-Pol PS-230” and after grinding and polishing their cross section was used for x-ray mapping.
