This paper investigated the content validity of a Vietnamese Standardized Test of English Proficiency (VSTEP.3-5) Reading test via both qualitative and quantitative methods.  The aim of the study is to evaluate the relevance and the coverage of the content in this test compared with the description in the test specification and the actual performance of examinees. With the content analysis provided by three testing experts using Bachman and Palmer’s 1996 framework and test score analysis, the study results in a relatively high consistency of the test content with the test design framework and the test takers’ performance. These findings help confirm the content validity of the specific investigated test paper. However, a need for content review is raised from the research as some problems have been revealed from the analysis.

Abstract This study analyzes the profile of Carita people in the efforts of tsunami disaster mitigation and the role of environmental learning in coping with the disaster, then analyzes the use of environmental learning. The method used is a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative methods. The quantitative method measures various community readiness levels in performing disaster mitigation, whereas the qualitative method is utilized to obtain various further information from the communities using interview technique. There were 88 randomly selected respondents participating in this research. The study results indicate a low land utilization density (below 33%). Indicators suggest a good category, namely: people evacuate when a disaster occurs (86%), rescue during a disaster (96.59%), and try to find new livelihoods (82.95%). In addition, public knowledge of disaster evacuation route is at a good level (87.50%) and there is an increase of 39.77% respondents with improved knowledge after the tsunami disaster occurred. Environmental learning, in this case, plays an important role to provide information to the public relating the efforts in disaster mitigation. The conclusion is that community’s disaster mitigation readiness still requires some improvement through various efforts, one of them is environmental learning with learning media in elementary school.

Students' difficulties in learning come from boredom, lack of excitement, and laziness stimulated by monotonous and uninteresting learning. This research aims to analyze three things: (1) how the use of animation video technology takes place in the process of Arabic learning; (2) how the students' learning attitude performs while using animation video technology; and (3) how the effectiveness of the use of animation video technology enhances the students' Arabic language mastery. This research method uses mixed-method research by combining qualitative and quantitative methods, focusing on the data collection and data analysis process. This research's respondents are the students of State Islamic Elementary School of Metro City, Lampung totalling 70 students. The research instrument is the list of questions to gain data on the implementation of learning using the animation video technology. The test instrument to get data about the results of Arabic learning before and after using animation video technology. This study results in findings that animation video technology has created a psychological atmosphere that is fun for the children. The feeling of pleasure has developed students' positive attitude in learning. The results of the t-test show that sig (2-tailed) is equal to 0.019 < the value of α (0.05), which means that there is a significant influence on the use of animation video technology on students' Arabic langauge ability. This study concludes that animation video technology designed interestingly has overcome various difficulties of students' learning. This study recommends using animation video technology in teaching the Arabic language.

Pronunciation is an important part of the speech process. Pronunciation should be worked on right from the start of language instruction. Pronunciation aids in the understanding of most information transmitted when communicating with students in English when learning and practicing language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Practice is the most important factor in achieving proficiency and fluency. The production and reception of sounds used in speech are referred to as pronunciation. This study is a hybrid of qualitative and quantitative methods. According to a 2021 survey of 50 university students, students understand the importance of English communication skills in general and English pronunciation in particular. However, this does not reflect the reality of student learning. Furthermore, empirical research shows that audiovisual tools, the use of a problem-solving strategy for improving pronunciation, and the method for improving pronunciation in a voice control system are the most effective and widely used methods for improving pronunciation.

Purpose The impact of COVID-19 outbreak freeze economic actors and hold innovative startups. This triggered the researchers to investigate the effect of the pandemic on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt and how do these start-ups deal on the whole with this serious situation. Design/methodology/approach The research in hand used both qualitative and quantitative methods. It started first with semi-structured interview questions addressed to a number of participants, then a quantitative study took place, ending with conclusion and recommendations. Findings There is an agreement among all participants that entrepreneurs should always be flexible and seek for investments in innovation. However, there is a discrepancy among participants’ opinions regarding the measurements taken by the Egyptian Government post the pandemic outbreak. Research limitations/implications The field study results and the exploratory research results would have come out more accurate if it was not confined only to geographical limitation (Cairo Governorate). Practical implications The research in hand suggests that practical measurements should not only provide first aid to start-ups by alleviating the pressure caused by constrained cash flow but also consider long-term measures embedded in and supported by the wider entrepreneurial ecosystem to ensure start-ups rapid recovery and growth. Social implications SMEs attribute to social and economic change and have an impact on the local public and social services sector as a result of the business’s activities. Originality/value This study first illustrates the challenges entrepreneurs are facing because of the pandemic, then it presents how entrepreneurs are dealing with the effects of the crisis.

Earthquakes pose serious threats to the world. Good individual resilience can cope with disaster well, but there were few appropriate assessment tools. The purpose of this study was to develop a new individual earthquake resilience questionnaire and test its reliability and validity. First, we built the framework of the individual earthquake resilience questionnaire based on expert interviews. Then, we established the initial version of questionnaire and used the Delphi method and item selection to modify it by qualitative and quantitative methods. Finally, we built the final version of questionnaire (contained 4 dimensions and 17 items) and tested the reliability and validity. The Cronbach’s α values of the four dimensions were between 0.79 and 0.91, the split-half reliabilities were between 0.85 and 0.93, and the test-retest reliabilities were between 0.72 and 0.80. The item content validity indexes were between 0.87–1, and the average questionnaire content validity index was 0.94. The correlation coefficients between each item and dimension with the total questionnaire ranged from 0.79–0.90 and 0.66–0.79, respectively. We used exploratory factor analysis to identify four common factors with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 74.97%. The questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool to measure individual resilience in the context of earthquake disasters.

The capstone project in many academic institutions is the high point of undergraduate studies in engineering. The transition of graduates to industry is still not optimal, and there is a disparity between the needs of industry and the actual ability of academia to meet these needs. This study examines the role of the capstone project as a pedagogical tool in the age of Industry 4.0 in the field of product development, and as a bridge between academia and industry. The study combines qualitative and quantitative methods, focusing on four stakeholders (academia, industry, students and advisors). The study is based on several sources, such as: semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, observations, and more. The study results indicate that the capstone project is important and valuable for industry and academia, as well as being perceived by students as the most important undergraduate course. Nevertheless, the results reveal that it has many gaps and shortcomings and illuminate the need for a deep perceptual and structural change. Academia should reconsider projects' length and define milestones in which independent learning is optimally enabled. The projects' contribution to academic institution reputation, should be considered when defining the project goals. Coping with the challenges and gaps found in this study, the project can also be used in order to reduce incongruities, while preparing the students in a better way for their professional role in changing environment.
