Abstract: Acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) is a part of acute nephritic syndrome characterized by gross hematuria, edema, hypertension, and renal insufficiency. This APSGN is common in children, caused by infection of Streptococcus β-hemoliticus group A nephritogenic strain, and 97% of cases were in developing countries including Indonesia. This study was aimed to obtain the risk factors of APSGN and their association with APSGN. This was a retrospective descriptive study with a cross sectional design. Samples were medical record data of Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Hospital Manado during the period of January 2013-October 2017. There were 67 samples in this study consisted of 48 (71.6%) cases of APSGN and 19 (25.3%) cases without APSGN. The bivariate analysis found five variables related to APSGN incidence, as followed: male gender (P =0.005), age ≥5 years (P=0.000), low socioeconomic status (P=0.000), good nutrition (P =0.000), and rainy season (P=0.005). Parents’ education was not related to APSGN incidence. Conclusion: The risk factors of APSGN in children were male gender, age ≥5 years, low socioeconomic status, good nutritional status, and rainy season.

SummaryThis case-control study was undertaken to determine socio-demographic risk factors for low birth weight in Al-Ain (United Arab Emirates) over a 12-month period in 1992–93. A total of 3485 live births occurred of which 293 (8·4%) were low birth weight. The risk factors considered were mother's occupation, house conditions, place of residence (urban or rural), maternal smoking habits, antenatal care, availability of help in the home, maternal BMI and educational status. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that mother's occupation, maternal smoking, antenatal care, and lack of help in the home were associated with increased risk of low birth weight.

Low Birth Weight (LBW) contributes to 60% to 80% of all neonatal and infant deaths in Indonesia whilst globally, prevalence of LBW is 15.5%, amounting to approximately 20 million LBW infants born each year. According to several previous studies, factors closely related with the incidence of LBW are high birth rates, shorter birth intervals, and low frequency of Antenatal Care (ANC) examinations. The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between parity, birth interval, and the frequency of ANC towards the incidence of LBW babies. This retrospective cross-sectional study using simple random sampling involved 95 mothers in RSUD Dr. Mohammad Soewandhie Surabaya between January and July 2016. Data was collected using medical records and analyzed using logistic regression test with p < 0.05. The result of this research showed there was no correlations between parity and incidence of LBW babies (p=0.162) nor between birth interval and incidence of LBW babies (p=0.574). There was a correlation between frequency of ANC and incidence of LBW babies (p=0.006). The physician should further improve early detection for LBW babies by monitoring high-risk pregnancy mothers routinely.

The paper quotes and discusses studies addressing the association between suicide and low birth weight. The results are partly contradictory, but still there seems to be a connection between suicide and low birth weight/birth length. This connection may be mediated through reduced mental health, low stress tolerance or cognitive deficits, all factors that are possibly related to the development of the CNS in utero. To which extent low socioeconomic status, low mental health in parents, low maternal age and nulliparity are factors in the causal pathway or confounders are not yet clarified.

Background: The low birth weight (LBW) infant remains at much higher risk of mortality than the infant at normal weight at birth. In the neonatal period when most infant deaths occur, the proportion of low birth weight infants is the major determinant of the magnitude of mortality rates. Mortality and morbidity among low birth weight babies are a major public health problem in our country. It is important to identify risk factors associated with LBW babies. Methods: Prospective observational study was conducted on 222 neonates with low birth weight admitted in Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi Meghe, Wardha from September 2015 to August 2017. Maternal risk factors and neonatal morbidities were recorded. The study was designed to assess the risk factors of LBW babies and their short-term outcome. Results: 222 low birth weight babies were studied, among which 36(16.22%) were weighed less than 1500 grams and 186 (83.78%) were 1500-2500 grams. The most common maternal risk factors which were associated with very low birth weight were low socio-economic status, occupations with more strenuous activity, low maternal educational status, poor antenatal care, poor pregnancy weight gain and chronic illnesses. Anemia was present in 99 (44.595%) mothers. Among other risk factors during pregnancy oligohydramnios was present in 43 (19.369%) mothers, followed by preeclampsia in 42 (18.918%) mothers and pyrexia in 31 (13.963%) mothers. 166 (74.76%) babies are small for gestational age (SGA) babies. Overall mortality rate was 40.54%.Conclusions: Most of LBW babies are SGA babies. Low socio-economic status, low maternal educational status and poor antenatal care were the important risk factors. Morbidity and mortality of low birth weight babies could be reduced considerably by proper health education, improved antenatal care, prompt identification of high risk pregnancies, proper referral, better nursing care and management.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze risk factors for overweight among adolescents grouped in three different socioeconomic levels. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1779 adolescents aged 11 to 17 years, grouped according to socioeconomic status (low, middle, and high). Parents reported their own anthropometric data and the adolescents had their anthropometric data taken by trained researchers, and completed three questionnaires. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight was 16.7%, 23.8%, and 26.3% in low, middle and high socioeconomic status, respectively (P= 0.001). In all socioeconomic status, parent's overweight was associated with adolescent overweight (all P< 0.05). The students in both high (PR= 1.90) and middle socioeconomic status (PR= 2.00) from private schools were associated with overweight, and the students from low socioeconomic level to sedentary behavior (PR= 2.25) and high ingestion of fried food (PR= 2.35). CONCLUSION: In each socioeconomic status the overweight was associated with different risk factors in different ways, except for parents overweight.
