AbstrakPrevalensi asma  terus meningkat (5—30% dalam satu dekade terakhir) dan lebih dari 50% penderita saat ini adalah anak-anak. Fenomena ini tidak terlepas dari kompleksitas patogenesis asma yang melibatkan faktor genetik dan lingkungan  yang dimulai sejak masa fetal. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menentukan hubungan antara faktor genetik, demografi, lingkungan, dan perinatal terhadap kejadian asma anak di RSUP Dr. M.. Djamil Padang. Desain penelitian ini adalah case-control study terhadap pasien rawat inap di bangsal anak. Pemilihan sampel menggunakan teknik simple randomized sampling dengan jumlah 78 pasien (39 kasus dan 39 kontrol). Data didapatkan melalui rekam medis subyek penelitian. Analisis data yang digunakan yaitu univariat dan bivariat dengan chi-square. Hasil uji chi-square menunjukkan usia < 5 tahun (p= 0,364), jenis kelamin laki-laki (p=0,255), berat badan lahir rendah (p=0,358), obesitas (p=0,382)  tidak memiliki hubungan bermakna dengan asma anak. Hanya riwayat atopi (p <0,05) yang memiliki hubungan berarti. Riwayat paparan asap rokok dan bulu binatang tidak lengkap; sedangkan  usia gestasional hanya satu kelompok saja sehingga tidak dianalisis. Disimpulkan bahwa tidak terdapat hubungan bermakna antara usia <5 tahun, jenis kelamin laki-laki, prematuritas dan obesitas dengan kejadian asma anak. Hubungan bermakna hanya terdapat pada riwayat atopi dengan kejadian asma anak.Kata kunci: asma anak, faktor risiko, riwayat atopi  AbstractPrevalence of asthma is  still elevating (5—30% at last decade) and more than 50% of asthmatic is children. This phenomenon is predicted correlating with the complexity of pathogenesis of asthma (included genetic, environtment and perinatal factors) that began from fetal-age. The objectives of this study was to deternine the correlation of genetic, demographic, environtment, perinatal factors to asthma in children in RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Research design was case-control study. The pediatric patients in RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang were the population. The 78 samples were taken by simple randomized sampling technique (39 cases and 39 controls). The chi-square test showed no correlation among age <5 years old (p=0,364), male for sex (p=0,255), low birth-weight (p=0,358), obesity (p=0,382) to children asthma. The history of atopy (p <0,05) was the only correlation to asthma in RSUP M. Djamil Padang. The data of environtment tobacco smoke and pet’s hair were not completed and prematurity history  just the only grouped in class of gestasional age, so the data were not analyzed. In conclusion, there are no correlation among age <5 years old, male for sex, low birth-weight, and obesity with children asthma. Atopic history is the  only data that has correlation with children ashtma in RSUP M. Djamil Padang. Keywords: children asthma, risk factors, atopic history

Objective Low birth weight (LBW) infants (<2,500 g) continued to be a global health problem because of the associated short- and long-term adverse outcomes. The study aimed to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and short-term outcomes of term LBW infants Study Design A prospective and case–control study. All infants born consecutively from September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019 were included. Cases, term LBW infants, were 1:1 matched to controls, appropriate for gestational age (AGA) term infants. Major congenital or chromosomal anomalies and multiple pregnancies were excluded. Results The prevalence of term LBW in the studied period was 4.8%. Mothers of term LBW infants had significantly lower body mass index (p = 0.05), gained less weight (p = 0.01), had a history of previous LBW (p = 0.01), and lower monthly income (p = 0.04) compared with mothers of term AGA infants even after adjustment for confounders. A nonsignificant higher number of term LBW infants needed NICU admission, while their need for phototherapy was deemed significant. Conclusion We identified nutritional and socioeconomic maternal factors that are significantly associated with LBW infants and should be targeted during antenatal visits to improve neonatal outcomes. Background. This study was done to assess the maternal and sociodemographic factors associated with low birth weight (LBW) babies.Methods. An unmatched case control study was done involving 159 cases (mothers having LBW singleton babies) and 159 controls (mothers having normal birth weight singleton babies).Results. More than 50% of LBW babies were from the mothers with height ≤145 cm while only 9.43% of NBW babies were from the mothers with that height. Finally, after multivariate logistic regression analysis, maternal height, time of first antenatal care (ANC) visit, number of ANC visits, iron supplementation, calcium supplementation, maternal education, any illness during pregnancy, and hypertension were found as the significant predictors of LBW. However, maternal blood group AB, normal maternal Body Mass Index (BMI), mother’s age of 30 or more years, and starting ANC visit earlier were found to be protective for LBW.Conclusion. Study findings suggest that selectively targeted interventions such as delay age at first pregnancy, improving maternal education and nutrition, and iron and calcium supplementation can prevent LBW in Nepal.

Objective To evaluate whether the presence of maternal blood pressure reduces the risks of morbidity, perinatal mortality and morbidity at 24 months of age in very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) compared with a control group. Methods A retrospective, observational, case-control study. Total 49 VLBWIs were allocated to the study group, called the maternal arterial hypertension group (AHG), and matched with 44 in the control group (CG). The infants were assessed during hospitalization and at 12 and 24 months corrected age at a specialized clinic. For the assessment of growth, the World Health Organization (WHO) Anthro software (Geneva, 2006) was used, and for the psychomotor assessment, the Denver II test was used. Results In relation to the antenatal variables, the infants of the AHG had more centralized circulation assessed by Doppler, received more corticosteroids and magnesium sulfate, and were born by cesarean section more frequently. In terms of the postnatal and in-hospital outcomes, the AHG had a higher gestational age at birth (30.7 versus 29.6 weeks) and a lower frequency of 5-minute Apgar scores of less than 7 (26.5% versus 52.3%). The CG had a higher rate of pulmonary dysplasia (30.2% versus 8.3%). There were no differences in terms of hospital mortality, complications, somatic growth and functional problems at 24 months of corrected age. Conclusion The presence of maternal hypertension, especially preeclampsia, was not a protective factor against morbidity, mortality and evolution in VLBWIs aged up to 24 months. Therefore, the clinical practice should be focused on prolonging the pregnancy for as long as possible in these conditions as well.

ABSTRACTBackgroundCerebral palsy is the main cause of physical disability in childhood.ObjectivesThis study analyzed prenatal and perinatal risk factors that contribute to cerebral palsy in Brazilian children.MethodsA case-control study was conducted with 2- to 10-year-old children in the city of Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. The cases were population-based, selected from the Primary Health Care services. The controls were selected from the database of the Brazilian Live Births Information System. Controls were paired with cases by gender, year, and hospital of birth.ResultsA total of 570 participants (114 cases and 456 controls) were studied. Most of the participants were male, with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy. Among the prenatal factors examined, the presence of congenital anomalies was significantly different between cases and controls (OR = 54.28, [95% CI 12.55, 234.86]). The analysis of perinatal factors revealed significant differences between cases and controls in low birth weight (OR = 3.8, [95% CI 2.34, 6.16]), preterm birth (OR = 2.31, [95% CI 1.41, 3.80]), and low Apgar scores (OR = 14.73, [95% CI 5.27, 41.15]).ConclusionsThe main prenatal and perinatal factors associated with cerebral palsy in our population were congenital anomalies, low Apgar scores, low birth weight, and preterm birth. The perinatal period had more risk factors, demanding a deeper study of their causes and of possible preventive measures.

Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the major public health challenges in India. LBW etiology is multifactorial and linked to multiple determinants, including maternal undernutrition and sociodemographic characteristics. The objective of the present endeavor was to assess how maternal dietary diversity and other sociodemographic factors among marginalized populations are associated with the incidence of LBW. The study was a part of the community-based intervention that aimed to improve maternal and child health in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, a state in central India. In this case-control study, cases were defined as mothers with an LBW child (<2500 grams) and controls as mothers without an LBW child. A quantitative survey was done with women of reproductive age, having at least one child aged 0–24 months. We calculated the dietary diversity based on the number of food groups consumed during pregnancy by women on a daily basis. Stepwise logistic regression models were built to test for associations between sociodemographic and dietary diversity variables and LBW incidence. There were 157 mothers with and 214 without an LBW child. Women’s diets mainly consisted of grains, such as wheat, rice, maize, and roots and tubers. Eggs and meat were consumed by less than 1% of the women. There were 20% lesser chances of an LBW child with increasing maternal dietary diversity scores (odds ratio: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.65, 0.96). The poor maternal diet quality during pregnancy may result in adverse birth outcomes with long-term consequences in a child.
