Overall results of the implementation of 29 cases on the development of formative assessment in higher education Abstract: In this paper we show the overall results after having implemented 29 innovative experiences in university teaching, based on the application of formative assessment systems. This implementation covers 7 areas of knowledge, 4 universities, 1,770 students and 29 teachers. The framework is the University Formative Evaluation Network, formed by university professors who focus on researching the potential of formative assessment to improve student learning and teaching process. The methodology used is “action research” and case studies. The results show that this evaluation system has many advantages: a) it allows learning new practice of assessment, b) greater involvement and more student motivation and c) it facilitates the acquisition of independent learning skills. It also presents some drawbacks, such as increased workload for the teacher and student, and a traditional lack of practice of teachers in the application of this model. However, the relationship between workload for the teacher and the student is in line with the requirement set by the new ECTS credit of the new degrees. The most important conclusion we have reached is that formative assessment is a very appropriate means to achieve the competencies required by the degrees, and it develops a dynamic process of teaching and learning that improves academic performance and students and teachers’ motivation.

Using audiovisual aids and information technologies in our educational system has a slow trajectory in the different educational levels. It seems as if the attempts of using them as didactical resources had been no effective. We are yet depending on the wills of the University teaching staff to use them without a real institutional support. It´s true that we are witnessing a great introduction at the University of these technologies, but we can see that profitability is more considered than didactical reasons. In the last years, the University Authorities want us to learn the use of digital platforms or to show students evaluation in formato web. The first point allows the incorporation of virtual students (bigger global amount of students with less costs: reductions in use of classrooms and other services). The second point gives more control and less storage of official documents with student´s evaluations. All things considered, the defence of the didactical profits of educational technologies haven´t been enough to be something of general use. It´s now, once we have understood the profitability they can give us, nor as learning mediator but as a way to organize educational services, that we have to use them perforce or to suffer the established consecuences. As in other studying levels, we use these resources in a limited way. In this communication we are going to show part of an experience of using this information technologies in our subjects. We describe the used resources an, after this, the way we used them. Some of them are films, other documents from our Centre Library, recordings of television programs (interviews, debates…). At last, we gather the opinion or our students with an anonymous questionnaire. The evaluation results of this project has been very satisfactory in two ways: the use of information technologies and the facilities that they give to the learning and teaching process.

Palabras clave: recursos pedagógicos, espacios virtuales de aprendizaje, plataforma virtual Moodle, trabajo colaborativo Assessment of the use of the Moodle virtual platform as a pedagogical resource in the university teaching of computer scienceAbstractThis article describes teachers’ assessments regarding the uses of the virtual platform as a teaching and learning resource in informatics courses of the University of Santander, Cúcuta. As a means of collecting the information necessary for the investigation, a survey of eight professors belonging to the Systems Department of the university was carried out. This survey was complemented by a semi-structured interview centered on the subjective experiences of three teachers. Among the most relevant results, it appears that the professors who participated in the study frequently use the virtual platform as a complement for the development of their courses. The appropriate management of the platform is executed as a dynamic and interactive process, in such a way that the teacher functions as the fundamental basis for the construction of ideas in its environment. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the use of the virtual platform in the training of university students has managed to reflect on the elementary techniques of education and can be applied in teaching processes based on virtual training. Keywords: pedagogical resources, virtual learning spaces, Moodle virtual platform, collaborative work, Valoração do uso da plataforma virtual Moodle como recurso pedagógico no ensino universitário da informática. Context: Rethinking mathematics teaching practices in a university context is an emerging research theme. Objectives: In this article, we aim to discuss the limits and possibilities of using mathematical tasks in the teaching and learning processes of the concepts of Derivative, Integral and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Design: The study is based on a qualitative-interpretative perspective of research, with methodological procedures inspired by a Design-Based Research. Environment and participants: The research was developed with students attending a Functions of a Variable class in a public university in the state of São Paulo. Data collection and analysis: Data were collected through mathematical tasks on Differential and Integral Calculus solved by students. The protocols produced were analysed, pointing out the main aspects identified, which led us to organize categories of analysis and dimensions (i) knowledges mobilized and developed by students in relation to mathematical concepts; (ii) main errors and difficulties presented by students in the development of tasks; (iii) limits and possibilities of the practice of exploratory teaching in the university context. Results: The results reveal aspects that characterize a process of resignifying the mathematical concepts discussed with the students and a deepening of their knowledge about the concepts of the DIC. Conclusions: As future notes, we suggest rethinking university teaching practice, since the study indicated possibilities and potentialities of the use of exploratory tasks in the teaching of Differential and Integral Calculus.

The University of Venda(Univen) distributed tablets to students for facilitating and enhancing their studies. However, the provision of tablet PCs to students may not be a panacea for quality learning, especially to technological disadvantaged rural student  population. The aim of study was to investigate the use of digital mobile devices for enhancing teaching and learning at the Univen. The research questions focused on determining the current level of use of mobile devices, how they can be used effectively for teaching and learning. Mixed methods approach was applied with data being solicited from a convenient sample of students, lecturers and an IT technician. The results of the study indicated that many students and lecturers are active and have higher perceptions of mobile devices usage. The results of the study are to be used to explicate and advance the integration of the mobile devices for promoting learning and teaching accomplishments. The findings clearly showed that mobile devices have a positive impact on the academic experience. The results also indicate that there is a gradual acceptance of the Learners Management Systems (Blackboard) by both academics and students. The digital mobile devices are eventually enhancing teaching and learning at Univen.

This article looks at theories and practices related to faculty development and innovation in teaching and learning methods in Higher Education, in order to respond to the European 2020 Strategy, in which the High level group on the modernisation of higher education has been established, whose aim focuses on improving the quality of teaching and learning in Europe's higher education institutions (2013). The paper is framed within the context of the project PRODID (Preparazione alla professionalitŕ docente e innovazione didattica), funded by the University of Padova, Italy with the major goal of creating a permanent and effective academic center for research on learning and teaching and faculty development. The theoretical framework of PRODID is informed by constructivism and social constructivism, and the student centered approach, encouraging student-teacher partnerships as a dimension for faculty development and teaching and learning innovations. The University of Helsinki and Michigan State University are mentioned as relevant examples of organizational settings integrated in higher education institutions that offer a great variety of practices consistent with the chosen theoretical framework. They also offer the Italian program of University of Padova models for critical reflection in how their teaching strategies can be created and developed on the basis of this international experience. The final discussion aims to highlight the strategies adopted during the first year of the project, characterized by the Italian culture and revealing new insights and ideas to create an Italian model of teaching and learning center.

This chapter introduces a new paradigm of learning and teaching that aims to develop students’ contextualized multiple intelligence (CMI) and create unlimited opportunity for students’ lifelong independent learning through a triplization process including individualization, localization, and globalization in teaching and learning. In particular, the chapter illustrates how students’ self-learning can be motivated, sustained, and highly enhanced in an individually, locally, and globally networked human and ICT environment. Different from the traditional emphasis on delivery of knowledge and skills in planned curriculum, the new paradigm pursues the extensive application of ICT and enhancement of teachers and students’ ICT literacy in building up a networked environment for students’ individualized, localized, and globalized learning and CMI development. It is hoped that students equipped with the necessary ICT literacy can become borderless learners with unlimited opportunities for learning and development in a networked environment.

This research uses case study research and employs a news translation module to analyse its synergic teaching method which includes a university teacher, an industry insider and translation learners. They, as the key stakeholders of the teaching and learning process, have their specific roles and continuously interact with each other. Through these interactions, actual trans-editing workflow is embedded into the university classroom. In order to examine the teaching effectiveness of such an innovative model, translation learners’ responses and commentaries are carefully taken into consideration. A wider implication of this research is that translator trainers may have their own reflections on innovating teaching strategies via the integration of academia and the professional world.
