This paper focuses on a detailed numerical investigation combined with experimental research for a non-premixed swirl combustor, which aims to analyze the effects of the blade angle of the outer swirler and equivalence ratio on flow and combustion characteristics. In the experiment, the temperature in the furnace was obtained with a thermocouple, while a realizable k-ε turbulence model and two-step reaction mechanism of methane and air are used in the numerical method. The calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The results reveal that the air flow rate through the swirler accounts for a small amount of the total air due to the influence of the draft fan, and there is no central recirculation zone (CRZ) despite the presence of the swirler. It was also found that NO emissions gradually decrease as the blade angle of the outer swirler increases. It was also indicated that the average temperature is 100 K higher than the general combustor with a 58° blade angle in the furnace by increasing the equivalent ratio of the tertiary air area, and the NO emissions reduced by approximately 25%. This study can provide guidance for the operation and structural design of non-premixed swirl combustors.

The flow hydrodynamics around a single cylinder differ significantly from the flow fields around two cylinders in a tandem or side-by-side arrangement. In this study, the experimental results on the mean and turbulence characteristics of flow generated by a pair of cylinders placed in tandem in an open-channel flume are presented. An acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) was used to measure the instantaneous three-dimensional velocity components. This study investigated the effect of cylinder spacing at 3D, 6D, and 9D (center to center) distances on the mean and turbulent flow profiles and the distribution of near-bed shear stress behind the tandem cylinders in the plane of symmetry, where D is the cylinder diameter. The results revealed that the downstream cylinder influenced the flow development between cylinders (i.e., midstream) with 3D, 6D, and 9D spacing. However, the downstream cylinder controlled the flow recirculation length midstream for the 3D distance and showed zero interruption in the 6D and 9D distances. The peak of the turbulent metrics generally occurred near the end of the recirculation zone in all scenarios.

Three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed for different flow rates and various geometrical parameters of step-pools in steep open channels to gain insight into the occurrence of energy loss and its dependence on the flow structure. For a given channel with step-pools, energy loss varied only marginally with increasing flow rate in the nappe and transition flow regimes, while it increased in the skimming regime. Energy loss is positively correlated with the size of the recirculation zone, velocity in the recirculation zone and the vorticity. For the same flow rate, energy loss increased by 31.6% when the horizontal face inclination increased from 2° to 10°, while it decreased by 58.6% when the vertical face inclination increased from 40° to 70°. In a channel with several step-pools, cumulative energy loss is linearly related to the number of step-pools, for nappe and transition flows. However, it is a nonlinear function for skimming flows.

The simple frigate shape (SFS) as defined by The Technical Co-operative Program (TTCP), is a simplified model of the frigate, which helps to investigate the basic flow fields of a frigate. In this paper, the flow fields of the different modified SFS models, consisting of a bluff body superstructure and the deck, were numerically studied. A parametric study was conducted by varying both the superstructure length L and width B to investigate the recirculation zone behind the hangar. The size and the position of the recirculation zones were compared between different models. The numerical simulation results show that the size and the location of the recirculation zone are significantly affected by the superstructure length and width. The results obtained by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method were also compared well with both the time averaged Improved Delayed Detached-Eddy Simulation results and the experimental data. In addition, by varying the model size and inflow velocity, various flow fields were numerically studied, which indicated that the changing of Reynolds number has tiny effect on the variation of the dimensionless size of the recirculation zone. The results in this study have certain reference value for the design of the frigate superstructure.

Groins are one of the popular manmade structures to modify the hydraulic flow and sediment response in river training. The spacing between groins is a critical consideration to balance the channel-depth and the cost of construction, which is generally determined by the backflow formed downstream from groins. A series of experiments were conducted using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to observe the influence of groin spacing on the backflow pattern of two bilateral groins. The spacing between groins has significant effect on the behavior of the large-scale recirculation cell behind groins. The magnitude of the wake flow induced by a groin was similar to that induced by another groin on the other side, but the flow direction is opposite. The spanwise velocity near the groin tip dictates the recirculation zone width behind the groins due to the strong links between the spanwise velocity and the contraction ratio of channel cross-sections between groins. Based on previous studies and present experimental results, quantitative empirical relationships are proposed to calculate the recirculation zone length behind groins alternately placed at different spacing along riverbanks. This study provides better understanding and a robust formula to assess the backflow extent of alternate groins and identify the optimum groins array configuration.

Flow recirculation zones and shear rate are associated with distinct pathogenic biological pathways relevant to thrombosis and atherogenesis. The interaction between stenosis severity and lesion eccentricity in determining the length of flow recirculation zones and peak shear rate in human coronary arteries in vivo is unclear. Computational fluid dynamic simulations were performed under resting and hyperemic conditions on computer-generated models and three-dimensional (3-D) reconstructions of coronary arteriograms of 25 patients. Boundary conditions for 3-D reconstructions simulations were obtained by direct measurements using a pressure-temperature sensor guidewire. In the computer-generated models, stenosis severity and lesion eccentricity were strongly associated with recirculation zone length and maximum shear rate. In the 3-D reconstructions, eccentricity increased recirculation zone length and shear rate when lesions of the same stenosis severity were compared. However, across the whole population of coronary lesions, eccentricity did not correlate with recirculation zone length or shear rate ( P = not signficant for both), whereas stenosis severity correlated strongly with both parameters ( r = 0.97, P < 0.001, and r = 0.96, P < 0.001, respectively). Nonlinear regression analyses demonstrated that the relationship between stenosis severity and peak shear was exponential, whereas the relationship between stenosis severity and recirculation zone length was sigmoidal, with an apparent threshold effect, demonstrating a steep increase in recirculation zone length between 40% and 60% diameter stenosis. Increasing stenosis severity and lesion eccentricity can both increase flow recirculation and shear rate in human coronary arteries. Flow recirculation is much more sensitive to mild changes in the severity of intermediate stenoses than is peak shear.

For indepth study on flow characteristics for fluid bypass obstacles in micro-channel, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) was used to simulate fluid flow over two circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangement of a micro-channel. The velocity distribution and recirculation zone length under different Reynolds numbers (Re = 0~100) and different spacing ratio (H/D= 0~2.0) were obtained. The results show that the pattern of flow and the size of recirculation zone in the micro-channel depend on the combined effect of Re and H/D.

Large-eddy simulations are used to investigate Coriolis forces effect on flow structure and heat transfer in a rotating dimpled channel. Two geometries with two dimple depths are considered, δ=0.2 and 0.3 of channel height, for a wide range of rotation number, Rob=0.0–0.70, based on mean bulk velocity and channel height. It is found that the turbulent flow is destabilized near the trailing side and stabilized near the leading side, with secondary flow structures generated in the channel under the effect of Coriolis forces. Higher heat transfer levels are obtained at the trailing surface of the channel, especially in regions of flow reattachment and boundary layer regeneration at the dimple surface. Coriolis forces showed a stronger effect on the flow structure for the shallow dimple geometry (δ=0.2) compared with the deeper dimple where the growth and shrinkage of the flow recirculation zone in the dimple cavity with rotation were more pronounced than the deep dimple geometry (δ=0.3). Under the action of rotation, heat transfer augmentation increased by 57% for δ=0.2 and by 70% for δ=0.3 on the trailing side and dropped by 50% for δ=0.2 and by 45% for δ=0.3 on the leading side from that of the stationary case.
