Objective: To study the correlation between severity of depression and the quality of sleep disturbances in patients with non psychotic depression. Method: A cross-sectional study of a cohort of 30 outpatient sample with non psychotic depression were recruited for the study. Controls were the accompanying relatives of the patients. Study was conducted at a government hospital in Tamil Nadu, South India. Inclusion criteria in the study group required fulfillment of ICD 10 criteria for major depressive disorder. Patients who were 18yrs of age and above and both male and female genders were included in the study. Both study and control groups were administered the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth sleepiness scale to measure the quality of sleep disturbances in the sample. Correlation between HAMD depression severity and the PSQI sleep quality scores and the Epworth sleepiness scale scores in the depressive patients and the correlation between nocturnal sleep disturbances and day-time sleepiness among depressed patients were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Analysis revealed significant inverse correlation between the severity of depression and components of quality of sleep such as subjective sleep quality, total sleep duration and habitual sleep efficiency and positive correlation with sleep latency. Conclusions: Study shows that as the severity of depression increases the severity of sleep disturbances also increases which also was significant when compared with the various components of sleep quality on the PSQI scale.

ABSTRACT In stroke patients particularly, many factors, such as sleep-related respiratory disturbances, can impair sleep. Cheap and easy-to-use tools have been created to identify sleep quality and sleep disturbances in patients after stroke. This study described the scores of the sleep apnea screening questionnaire - STOP-BANG - in patients after a stroke, and correlated the findings with sleep quality measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The scores of the STOP-BANG and PSQI were 4.3 ± 1.8 and 76 ± 3.9, respectively. The STOP-BANG scores were higher in poor sleepers (4.5 ± 1.6 versus 3.5 ± 1.9; p = 0.032). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of subjective sleep quality (PSQI) and the STOP-BANG as a predictor of poor quality sleep, with a relative risk of 1.6, controlled for age and sex. This study indicated that sleep quality was largely influenced by sleep breathing problems, which were well identified by the STOP-BANG, especially in younger stroke patients.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the quality of sleep in women with urinary incontinence before and after sling surgery. Methods: A prospective study of case series of women with urodynamic diagnosis of stress urinary incontinence. To evaluate the subjective quality of sleep, two specific questionnaires were used and validated for the Portuguese Language: Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The questionnaires were applied before and 6 months after surgical repair. Results: When analyzing the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, there was an improvement in sleep quality (p=0.0401). For the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, only for sleep disorder there was improvement in quality of sleep after surgery (p=0.0127). Conclusion: Women with urinary incontinence, submitted to surgery with sling, showed improvement in both quality of sleep and sleep disorder.

Introduction Pregnancy is characterized by several changes in her body. These changes contribute to the emergence of low back pain, which may influence the quality of sleep during pregnancy. Objective To compare the quality of sleep among pregnant women with and without low back pain during pregnancy, examining the relationship between two variables. Materials methods Thirty volunteers aged between 19 and 36 years, divided into control group (CG – n = 16) and Study Group (SG – n = 14), residents in the cities of Natal, were evaluated in the second trimester of pregnancy. To sleep evaluation were used to index the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Low back pain was evaluated using the pressure algometer, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index. Statistical analysis used the Shapiro Wilk test, Student’s T test for independent samples and Pearson correlation test. Results The mean gestational and chronological ages were 28.2 ± 3.4 years and 19.9 ± 3.7 weeks, respectively. Sleep quality was lower in SG (8.21 ± 4.8) when compared to CG (5.94 ± 1.7) and was statistically significant (P = 0.021). Analyzing the relationship between sleep quality and pain intensity, it was observed that the variables have a positive correlation between them (r = 0.372, P = 0.043). Conclusion Our findings indicate that sleep quality is decreased in women with low back pain compared to those without pain.

Sleep is a basic human need. Sleep can help maintain the balance of both physiologically and psychologically to maintain health and life. However, the process is hampered sleep can cause people to experience a lack of sleep and consequently people will get tired and decreased concentration. This resulted in a decrease in work productivity and can cause accidents. The purpose of this study is to describe the quality of sleep in rotating workers at SK Lerik Hospital Kupang City in 2018. The research was conducted at the Hospital of SK Lerik starting in May-June 2018. This study is a quantitative study with a descriptive survey method. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The total sample in this study amounted to 126 people. The results showed that 114 (90,48%) of respondents have poor sleep quality, 77 (61,11%) of respondents considered that the quality of sleep is good, 45 (35,71%) of respondents have very less sleep latency, 53 (42,06%) of respondents slept 5-6 hours per day, 47 (37,30%) had sleep inefficient, 90 (71,43%) of respondents experiencing mild sleep disturbances, 118 (93,65%) of respondents never use sleeping pills, and 61 (48,41%) of respondents considered that the dysfunction experienced sleep during the day only a minor problem, In order to have a good quality sleep, should reduce the habit of using electronic devices (Smartphone and TV) before sleep and workers take turns at night should make up for lack of sleep at night with a nap sufficient.

As gestational age increases, the quality of sleep can decrease. It was reported that about 60% of late trimester pregnant women experience fatigue and> 75% experience sleep disturbances. However, these complaints are often ignored, even though it can lead to an increased risk of gestational hypertension, diabetes, prematurity, and postpartum depression. Sleep disturbances can also cause depression and stress that affects the fetus. Mild stress causes an increase in fetal heart rate which, if left untreated, will make the baby hyperactive. Meanwhile, the consequences are depression and babies who are born have less time to sleep deeply. Efforts to overcome this sleep disorder are yoga and lavender aromatherapy inhalation. Purpose: Therefore, the researchers estimated that the application of a combination of prenatal gentle yoga and lavender aromatherapy would be more effective in affecting the quality of sleep in pregnant women, so it is hoped that it can reduce sleep disturbances in third trimester pregnant women. Results: There is a significant effect of the combination of prenatal gentle yoga and inhalation of lavender aromatherapy in improving sleep quality in the treatment group with a value of α = 0.011 or α <0.05. There was a significant difference in the quality of sleep in the group compared to the control group with a value of α = 0.004 or α <0.05. Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic incited unprecedented global restrictions on society’s behavior. Home detachment and isolation measures applied during the COVID-19 pandemic can result in problems with sleep quality. It is an important measure to reduce the risk of infection from the COVID-19 outbreak. Objective: to investigate the existence of a difference between the quality of sleep before and during the home distance imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: cross-sectional web-based survey was sent using different conventional social media to collect data from the study population. The evaluated group was composed of 124 subjects, 57 of whom were male and 67 were female from the city of Rio Branco / AC. For this study, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI-BR) and a socio-demographic questionnaire were used. The volunteers received a link along with the description and purpose of the study. Finally, data analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 software. Results: sleep quality worsened significantly during home distance in four sleep components (subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep drowsiness and overall PSQI score). During social distance, poor sleep was greater among respondents (OR = 5.68; 95% CI = 1.80–17.82; p = 0.70). Conclusion: the results indicated that there was a significant difference between the quality of sleep before and during home detachment and sleep disturbance and the subjective quality of sleep before and during the period of the outbreak of COVID-19 were the components that most worsened in the state of sleep

Background and Objective: Insufficient sleep duration as well as quality is becoming endemic in our modern society. The time of going to bed and sleep quality and quantity are linked with students’ learning abilities and academic accomplishment. Therefore, this paper firstly opted to measure the level of sleep quality of the students of Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka-1342, Bangladesh, and finally detect the association between quality of sleep and academic achievement among the students. Materials and Methods: The primary data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from 334 students with a response rate about 84 percent during February to March 2019. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to measure the sleep quality of the students. The percent distribution, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression were employed to identify the influence of the components of sleep quality on academic performance. Results: Only the sleep quality of one-fourth of the students was good. Moreover, sleep duration, subjective sleep quality, and daytime dysfunction were positively related to the academic performance; however, sleep latency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medications, and habitual sleep efficiency were inversely associated with the academic performance of the students. Conclusion: Academic performance of a student was related to the components of sleep quality. Thus, this study indicates that students with poor academic performance have problems regarding sleep issues. Medical advice should be followed to maintain a healthier lifestyle including adequate rest time.

Baby massage dan baby gym adalah upaya untuk meningkatkan kualitas tidur pada bayi.  Masalah tidur pada bayi di Indonesia cukup banyak, yaitu sekitar 44,2% bayi mengalami gangguan tidur seperti sering terbangun di malam hari. Namun lebih dari 72% orang tua menganggap gangguan tidur bukan suatu masalah atau hanya masalah kecil, hal tersebut diungkapkan oleh sebuah penelitian pada tahun 2014-2015 yang dilaksanakan di lima kota besar di Indonesia Berdasarkan data awal terdapat 20 bayi yang datang ke posyandu dan ditemukan 17 bayi yang mengalami gangguan tidur. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui efektivitas baby massage dan baby gym terhadap kualitas tidur bayi usia 3-6 bulan di Desa Talang Tegal. Jenis penelitian adalah kuantitatif dengan two group pre and post test  design. Sampel sebanyak 34 bayi yang diberikan perlakuan baby massage dan baby gym dilakukan selama 2 minggu 3x seminggu, untuk baby massage 15 menit sedangkan untuk baby gym 5 menit. Terdapat pengaruh baby massage terhadap kualitas tidur bayi usia 3-6 bulan dengan  p value 0.000. Terdapat pengaruh baby gym terhadap kualitas tidur bayi usia 3-6 bulan dengan  p value 0,001. Tidak terdapat perbedaan efektivitas baby massage dan baby gym terhadap kualitas tidur bayi usia 3 – 6 bulan. Kata kunci : baby gym; baby massage; kualitas tidur bayi  The Effectiveness of Baby Massage And Baby Gym on Sleep Quality of 3-6 Months Baby ABSTRACT  Baby massage and baby gym are efforts to improve the quality of sleep in babies. There are quite a number of sleep problems in infants in Indonesia, which is around 44.2% of infants experiencing sleep disorders such as frequent awakenings at night. However, more than 72% of parents consider sleep disturbances not a problem or just a minor problem, this was revealed by a 2014-2015 study conducted in five major cities in Indonesia. Based on initial data there were 20 babies who came to the Integrated Healthcare Centre and found 17 babies with sleep disorders. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of baby massage and baby gym on the sleep quality of baby aged 3-6 months in Talang Tegal Village. This type of research was quantitative with two groups pre-post test design. A sample of 34 babies who were given baby massage and baby gym treatment was carried out for 2 weeks 3 time each week, for baby massage 15 minutes while for baby gym 5 minutes. There is an effect of baby massage on the sleep quality of babies aged 3-6 months with a p value of 0.000. There is an effect of baby gym on the sleep quality of babies aged 3-6 months with a p value of 0.001. There is no difference in the effectiveness of baby massage and baby gym on the sleep quality of babies aged 3-6 months. Keywords: baby gym; baby massages; sleep quality of baby

The aim: The work is aimed to study the formation mechanisms of sleep disturbances with GERD based on the determination of melatonin and serotonin indicators in the blood, psychosomatic status and quality of sleep, motor-secretory function of the esophagus and stomach in young people. Materials and methods: All 63 patients were with non-erosive GERD and insomnia. Among them, 32 with inhibitory personality type and 31 with excitable personality type. The control group is 25 people. Questionnaires were used to determine the quality of sleep, quality of life, state of the nervous system, ultrasound, stomach acidity, level of melatonin and serotonin. Results: In patients with inhibitory personality type, depressive disorders, lower sleep quality and quality of life were more pronounced, and in patients with excitable type, increased levels of reactive and personal anxiety and pronounced motor-secretory disorders. Conclusions: Psychosomatic disorders in GERD have a significant impact not only on the quality of sleep, quality of life, the level of melatonin and serotonin, the regulation of the secretory and motor functions of the stomach, but they are one of the links in the pathogenetic mechanism of the formation of both GERD and insomnia with it.

Objective: This was a descriptive study with the objective to determine the sleep disturbances and the quality of sleep among patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).Methods: Quantitative approach with non-experimental descriptive design was used. A semi-structured sleep disturbance questionnaire was used to determine the sleep disturbances, and a standardized Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index tool was used to assess the sleep quality among 100 subjects in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.Results: The study results showed that majority of the subjects (51%) were of the age group between 56 and 65 years, and 71% were male with CVD. Sleep disturbances were present in 80% of the subjects with CVD, among which 56% subjects had mild disturbances, 20% subjects with moderate sleep disturbances, and 4% subjects with severe sleep disturbances. The result also indicated that 48% of subjects had poor sleep quality. Findings also showed a highly statistically significant association between cardiomyopathy and sleep disturbances (p<0.001). Total cholesterol and low-density cholesterol levels were significantly associated with sleep disturbances (p<0.05). There is a highly significant association between sleep disturbances and quality of sleep (p<0.001), indicating that sleep disturbances can be one factor in decreasing the quality of sleep in patients with CVD.Conclusion: The results of the study indicated that sleep disturbances were prevalent in patients with CVD and often hazardous to heart health. As health practitioner and other health-care providers have not focused major attention on the importance of sleep to health, the need for providing information to them and patients regarding the importance of improving the quality of sleep and identifying the sleep disturbances will call for action to bring sleep to the forefront of public health.
