Nowadays research of stress phenomena in psychological science is highly significant. Many citizens suffer from the stressors of current Ukrainian crisis society. First of all, the personal stress tolerance development is a psychotherapeutic problem that should be emphasized. However, there is no unique concept for stress tolerance development. The article provides a matrix of integrative personal stress tolerance development and its theoretical and methodological foundation. Stress tolerance is considered as an integrative property of personality characterized by a coordinated interaction of psychophysiological, emotional (motivational, communicative), cognitive, volitional components that ensure its achievement or successful overcoming of critical situations (crisis, stress, conflict, frustration) in everyday and extreme living conditions. The matrix developed by the author is the result of psychotherapeutic and consultative work with patrol police officers, and victims of critical life situations (crisis, stress, conflict, frustration). The sequence of psychotherapeutic work is represented by the following stages as: stage of identifying a topical problem, stage of working with psychophysiological component of stress tolerance, stage of changing negative protection for successful coping strategies, stage of working with emotional component of stress tolerance, stage of self-discovery of dominant communicative personal traits, stage of operation with cognitive stress component, the stage of coping resources obtaining, the stage of new value priorities, goals and self-organization determination, the stage of operation with the volitional structure of personal stress tolerance.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine the prevalence of the use of discipline matrices across large US police departments, as well as to compare the structure and content of such matrices. Design/methodology/approach – The study employs a two phase approach. Phase I consisted of a brief online survey of a stratified, random sample of police departments with 100 or more sworn police officers and asked about whether or not the agency employed a discipline matrix. Phase II consisted of requesting a copy of the matrix and corresponding materials from all agencies who indicated they employed a matrix, and analyzing the content of those matrices. Findings – In total, 37 percent of responding agencies said they are using or are planning a discipline matrix, and the authors obtained a matrix from 32 police departments. The structure of the matrices and recommended discipline varied widely across these departments, indicating a lack of consensus on the development of this relatively new accountability tool. Research limitations/implications – The survey focussed on large police departments and the response rate was somewhat lower than other past national surveys. Practical implications – Discipline matrices are employed to a greater extent than is implied by the current research literature. The lack of consensus and variability in policies around matrices indicates a need for more research which could contribute toward the formation of a model policy in this regard. Originality/value – To date the prevalence of discipline matrices across US police departments was unknown, and very little was known about how they were structured or what comprised their content.

The article presents the theoretical and empirical study of the structure of tolerance to stress. The system of tolerance to stress was the study object. The study subject was the psychological patterns of an individual’s tolerance to stress and its development. The author describes the mechanisms of self-regulation at stress in the system “individual – personality – individuality - over-personality”. The following techniques were used for the empirical study: “Mini-mult” test of V.P. Zaitseva to identify distressing personal traits; H. J. Eysenck’s test to determine types of temperament; E.Heim’s technique examining the adaptability of coping strategies used by people; patrol police officer were examined with the author’s questionnaire “Examination of personal tolerance to stress”. The author identified the action mechanisms for each component of tolerance to stress: psychophysiological, emotional, cognitive and volitional. Correlations were determined between the components of the studied system. Thus, the psychophysiological component is the basis for development of other components of tolerance to stress. Correlations among an individual’s temperament, character, coping strategies and free will were demonstrated in the theoretical and empirical research. The determined components of tolerance to stress are interdependent, they complemented each other in an integrated system: one is possible due to others. Psychophysiological self-regulation was possible due to developed regulative capabilities of the autonomic nervous system. The emotional component of stress tolerance correlated with physiological and socio-cultural needs that motivated an individual to avoid or overcome obstacles. The emotional component can be regulated due to the feedback mechanism. Such feedback makes a system stronger, pushes it toward changes corresponding to already existing direction of an individual’s movement aimed to overcome difference between the actual and desired systemic states. The balanced feedback pulls into the opposite direction to restore a lost balance. It stabilizes the system and prevents new changes. The cognitive component in the structure of stress tolerance had its mechanisms of cognitive regulation: assimilation and dissimilation, encouraging appearance of new personal traits. Self-regulation as a stress overcoming act is possible due to an individual’s volitional qualities. The volitional mechanisms for stress tolerance are: persistence and meaningfulness, objectivity and integrity. The further research will include development of a program for stress tolerance improvement.

The article accounts for the theoretical and methodological feasibility of the research aimed at the investigation of the development of interpersonal trust in police officers. Unlike people’s trust in police, police officers’ trust in other people is highly underinvestigated. We therefore deem it necessary to analyze works investigating other law enforcement officials’ credibility (especially corrections officers’ credibility) and civilians’ credibility. The analysis shows that interpersonal trust as a foundation of professional relationships is largely shaped in the process of acquiring higher education. The article maintains that interpersonal trust is an essential prerequisite for efficient operational service. It shows that the level of interpersonal trust correlates with socially valid communication skills, democratic management style, communicative tolerance, empathy. The article investigates the factors that facilitate the development of trust in police officers: principles of interpersonal perception, police officers’ individual character traits, other people’s character traits, outer looks and behavioral patterns. It describes the methodological foundation of research of interpersonal trust in police officers.
