Preliminary Phytochemical analysis of Andrographis paniculata Leaf extract

Andrographis paniculata is a traditional medicinal plant widely used in Ayurveda and Siddha treatment. The extract from this plant is used to prevent and cure certain diseases. Phytochemical analysis of this leaf extract would identify the compounds in it and through this, new medicine could be formulated. In this study, three different solvent systems (Solvent A-100% aqueous, Solvent B-100% methanol and Solvent C- 50% aqueous and 50% methanol) were used to extract the compounds from leaves with three different time period of 24hrs, 48 hrs and 72 hrs. When compared to other conditions, the majority of the compounds were discovered in analyses with solvent C at 24hrs. The major compounds such as alkaloid, terpenoid, flavonoid, tannin and saponin were identified in the leaf extract. This study reveals that; with better extraction conditions, the presence of most of the phytochemicals from the leaf extract could pave a way to formulate new medication.

Objective: The aim was to investigate phytoconstituents, composition of pigments, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) and allelopathy of Alternanthera ficoidea (L.) P. Beauv.Methods: Qualitative phytochemical analysis was carried out by the method of Paech and Tracey using five different solvent systems (D.W., ether, chloroform, ethanol, and methanol). Methanol leaf extract of this plant was analyzed using GCMS. Chlorophylls, carotenoid, and polyphenols were estimated by following standard methods. Allelopathy effect was studied using leaf leachets on seeds of jowar and mung.Result and Conclusion: Investigation of above parameters in A. ficoidea showed presence of large amount of pharmaceutically important phytochemicals like tannins, saponins, phytols, carotenoids, xanthophylls and polyphenols. It indicates that this weed can be used in herbal medicines and dietary supplements. Since this weed is showing allelopathy effect it should be eradicated from fields before it spreads and occupies the place meant for crop plants.Keywords: Allelopathy, Alternanthera ficoidea, Exotic weed, Phytochemicals.

Aim: The Aim of this study is to determine the effect of aqueous leaf extract of Tamarindus indica  and peel extract Citrus sinensis on Root Knot Nematodes, in vitro. Study Design: The experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design. Place of Study: This study was carried out in the biology laboratory of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, University of Jos, Nigeria. Methods: Extraction of phytochemicals from Tamarindus indica leaf and Citrus sinensis peels was carried out using an aqueous solvent. Tamarindus indica leaves and Citrus sinensis peels were collected within the province of Jos, and were dried at constant room temperature to a constant weight after which pulverized, sieved and soaked in water for 24 hours. The extraction was done using the cold maceration method. Eighty (80) second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne spp. were exposed to the extracts at different concentrations (100, 80, 60, 40, and 20mg/ml) for 6, 12, 18, 24. 30, 32 and 48 hours and, each treatment was replicated 5 times. The average number of dead nematodes per concentration were determined and recorded as mean ± SEM with statistical value at P < 0.05 considered significant. Results: Results of phytochemical analysis showed that Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Tannins, Steroids, Phenols, and Cardioglycosides were present in T. indica leaf extracts while C. sinensis peels contains Flavonoids, Alkaloids, Saponins, Tannins, Phenols, and Resins. These phytochemicals present are suspected to be responsible for the nematicidal activities of the plants. Nematode mortality in the two treatment groups (T. indica and C. sinensis extracts) was highest at 100mg/ml concentration (48 hours of exposure); It was followed by 80mg/ml in decreasing order while the least mortality rate was recorded at 20mg/ml. Hence, as the concentration of the extracts were increased with increase in time, high nematode mortality was observed. Percentage mortality of treated nematodes was statistically significant (P < 0.05) for all concentrations of the extracts at the different time intervals when compared to the control. Statistical analysis showed that T. indica had significantly higher effect on Root-Knot nematodes mortality than C. sinensis at varying concentrations and time of exposure. Benefits of Results: Synthetic pesticides are the principal means used to control nematodes, but the natural products may provide a safe alternative. Hence, the active compounds (phytochemicals) in T. indica L. and C. sinensis L. can be harnessed to be used as biopesticides. Conclusion: The study suggests that extracts of T. indica and C. sinensis can be utilized in the control of root knot nematodes and may have the potential for the production of biopesticides that can be used for the control of nematodes as it displayed nematicidal activities.

Solanum glaucophyllum Desf. (Solanaceae) is traditionally used for curing several health conditions in both human and domesticated animals. There is no data available regarding pharmacognostic standardization and pharmacological activity of this less known medicinal plant. Therefore, the aim of the present work is to prepare pharmacognostic fingerprints of crude drugs obtained from the leaf and stem parts of S. glaucophyllum. Apart from this detailed phytochemical analysis, antioxidant and antimicrobial studies have also been carried out. Pharmacognostic study revealed that the leaves are amphistomatic and stomata are strictly of anisocytic type. Values of stomatal index, palisade ratio, ash content of the investigated parts are found distinct and can be used as pharmacognostic standards for evaluation of crude drugs of this medicinal plant. Phytochemical studies of the leaf and stem parts indicated that phenolics, flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids are present in quite impressible amount. Curcumin content in stem was found very high through HPLC analysis. In DPPH radical scavenging assay, the stem part showed significant antioxidant potential. Ethanol extract of stem produced maximum inhibition zone (11mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the concentration of 50 mg/ml among five test microorganisms. Some pharmacognostic features recorded in this study as diagnostic ones will help in proper identification of this ethnomedicinal plant in its fresh as well as dried form. On the other hand preliminary phytochemical, antioxidant and antimicrobial studies highlight the S. glaucophyllum as a promising candidate for bioprospecting.

In this paper, a study on the influence of extraction solvent on the active principles content of purslane - Portulaca oleracea extracts was performed. For the study were used both fresh and dried plants, chopped by plant chopping machine. The following extracts were obtained and analysed in the solvent systems mentioned below: (fresh) purslane extract in Ethanol 30%, (dry) purslane extract in Ethanol 30%; (fresh) purslane extract in EtOH 70%, (dry) purslane extract in EtOH 70%; (fresh) purslane extract in propylene glycol 20%, (dry) purslane extract in propylene glycol 20%; (fresh) purslane extract in PG 100%, (dry) purslane extract in PG 100%; (fresh) purslane extract in glycerine 20%, (dry) purslane extract in glycerine 20%; (fresh) purslane extract in R glycerine, (dry) purslane extract in R glycerine; purslane hydro-alcoholic glycerine extract. The results obtained in the study performed on purslane extracts in different solvents show that the capitalization of purslane can become very profitable and with beneficial effects on economy in our country, both in terms of food and as medicinal plant.

Background:Tamarix Articulata (T. articulata), commonly known as Tamarisk or Athal in Arabic region, belongs to the Tamaricaece species. It is an important halophytic medicinal plant and a good source of polyphenolic phytochemical(s). In traditional medicines, T. articulata extract is commonly used, either singly or in combination with other plant extracts against different ailments since ancient times.Methods:Electronic database survey via Pubmed, Google Scholar, Researchgate, Scopus and Science Direct were used to review the scientific inputs until October 2018, by searching appropriate keywords. Literature related to pharmacological activities of T. articulata, Tamarix species, phytochemical analysis of T. articulata, biological activities of T. articulata extracts. All of these terms were used to search the scientific literature associated with T. articulata; the dosage of extract, route of administration, extract type, and in-vitro and in-vivo model.Results:Numerous reports revealed that T. articulata contains a wide spectrum of phytochemical(s), which enables it to have a wide window of biological properties. Owing to the presence of high content of phytochemical compounds like polyphenolics and flavonoids, T. articulata is a potential source of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties. In view of these pharmacological properties, T. articulata could be a potential drug candidate to treat various clinical conditions including cancer in the near future.Conclusion:In this review, the spectrum of phytochemical(s) has been summarized for their pharmacological properties and the mechanisms of action, and the possible potential therapeutic applications of this plant against various diseases discussed.

The present study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activity of Swietenia mahagoni leaf extract. The leaf extract was subjected to a variety of phytochemical analysis. The qualitative phytochemical tests exhibited the presence of common phytocompounds like alkaloids, tannins, saponins, phlobatannins, flavanoids, terpenoids and volatile oils as major active constituents. The plant (Swietenia mahagoni) leaf has valuable medicinal uses, hence petroleum ether (18.2g) was found to be a good solvent for the phytochemical and antibacterial study. Similarly, the Methanolic leaf extract of Swietenia mahagoni has highest zone of inhibition on Bacillus subtilis.
