In this paper, a study on the influence of extraction solvent on the active principles content of purslane - Portulaca oleracea extracts was performed. For the study were used both fresh and dried plants, chopped by plant chopping machine. The following extracts were obtained and analysed in the solvent systems mentioned below: (fresh) purslane extract in Ethanol 30%, (dry) purslane extract in Ethanol 30%; (fresh) purslane extract in EtOH 70%, (dry) purslane extract in EtOH 70%; (fresh) purslane extract in propylene glycol 20%, (dry) purslane extract in propylene glycol 20%; (fresh) purslane extract in PG 100%, (dry) purslane extract in PG 100%; (fresh) purslane extract in glycerine 20%, (dry) purslane extract in glycerine 20%; (fresh) purslane extract in R glycerine, (dry) purslane extract in R glycerine; purslane hydro-alcoholic glycerine extract. The results obtained in the study performed on purslane extracts in different solvents show that the capitalization of purslane can become very profitable and with beneficial effects on economy in our country, both in terms of food and as medicinal plant.

Withania somnifera, commonly known as ashwagandha, is a wildly growing highly valuable medicinal plant, found throughout India. Ashwagandha has high medicinal value due to its antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, anti-ageing and rejuvenating properties. Since use of synthetic agrochemicals in the cultivation of medicinal plants is highly restricted due to their harmful effects on human health and environment, present study was aimed to explore the role of endophytic bacteria in enhancing the nutrient level in soil and growth of ashwagandha. In this study, growth promoting potential of endophytic bacterial strain PSE-1 was explored which was isolated from the roots of W. somnifera and identified as Pseudomonas sp. on the basis of 16s rRNA gene sequencing. Results obtained from the study suggest that endophytic bacteria Pseudomonas sp. plays important role in improving the nutrient level in soil and displayed beneficial effects on plant growth.

Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) is a plant growing in tropical areas and previously known as an ornamental plant, but then later used as medicinal plant. Previous researches found that red betel leaves contain bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and many more that have potential to be used as antioxidant. The extractions were carried out using variations of solvent types (ethanol, water, and ethyl acetate) and feed to solvent (F:S) ratios in g/ml (F:S=1:20, F:S=1:25, F:S=1:30). The best conditions from this research were the usage of ethanol as the solvent. In addition to its ability to extract the compounds potential as antioxidant and F:S ratio of 1:30, it could give highest yield of extract. Variation of solvent type and variation of F:S have significant effect on the value of antioxidant activity (IC50) of the red betel leaf sample.

<p><strong>Background. </strong>All of the Pinaceae require the ectomycorrhizal interaction to survive under field conditions. However, their use has not traditionally been considered in the production of forest plants in Neotropical areas.</p><p><strong>Hypothesis.</strong> There will be an increase in plant quality in greenhouse and in survival in the field of <em>Pinus pringlei</em> inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMF).</p><p><strong>Site of study.</strong> The experiment was carried out in Texcoco, Mexico, in two sites: i) greenhouse of the Colegio de Postgraduados; and ii) in the field, in the San Pablo Ixayoc town.</p><p><strong>Methods.</strong> <em>P. pringlei</em> plants, a native species of Mexico, were inoculated with the ECMF: i) <em>Hebeloma alpinum </em>(<em>Ha</em>); ii) <em>Laccaria trichodermophora</em> (<em>Lt</em>); and iii) <em>Thelephora terrestris</em> (<em>Tt</em>). The effect of this inoculation on plant growth and nutritient translocation was evaluated. A morphological and molecular characterization of ectomycorrhizal roots and an evaluation of the seedling field survival were carried out, and compared with non-inoculated plants.</p><p><strong>Results.</strong> <em>Pinus pringlei</em> plants inoculated with ECMF increased their growth and nutrient content. A significant nutritional allocation from root to stem mainly of K, Fe, and Zn was recorded.</p><p>The morpho-anatomical and molecular characterization showed the presence of <em>Ha</em>, <em>Lt </em>and <em>Tt</em> in ectomycorrhizal roots. Two-year old plants mainly inoculated with <em>Ha</em> and<em> Tt</em> showed higher survival in the field than non-inoculated plants.</p><p><strong>Conclusions.</strong> The beneficial effects of ECMF on <em>P. pringlei</em> growth, nutrimental translocation (mainly on K, Fe and Zn), and field survival rates are reported for the first time.</p>

Two common extraction solvent systems, namely acidified aqueous methanol and acidified aqueous acetone, were used to extract blackberry phenolics, and the antioxidant properties of the recovered extracts were compared. The crude extracts were fractionated into low- and high-molecular-weight phenolics by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The hydrophilic-oxygen radical absorbance capacity (H-ORACFL), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and the cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) assays were employed as indices to assess antioxidant capacity of the extracts and their respective fractions. The methanolic solvent system displayed a greater efficiency at extracting anthocyanin and flavonol constituents from the blackberries, while the acetonic solvent system was better at extracting flavan-3-ols and tannins. Anthocyanins were the dominant phenolic class found in the blackberries with 138.7 ± 9.8 mg C3G eq./100 g f.w. when using methanol as the extractant and 114.6 ± 3.4 mg C3G eq./100 g f.w. when using acetone. In terms of overall antioxidant capacity of blackberry phenolics, the acetonic solvent system was superior. Though present only as a small percentage of the total phenolics in each crude extract, the flavan-3-ols (42.37 ± 2.44 and 51.44 ± 3.15 mg/100 g f.w. in MLF and ALF, respectively) and ellagitannins (5.15 ± 0.78 and 9.31 ± 0.63 mg/100 g f.w. in MHF and AHF, respectively) appear to account for the differences in the observed antioxidant activity between the two solvent systems.

ABSTRACTAbelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik. (A. manihot) is a medicinal plant that contains forms of flavones, flavonols, isoflavones, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins. This research was conducted to determine the optimum concentration, pH and temperature variables for anthocyanins in A. manihot leaves. The sample was extracted by using 1:10 methanol solvent maceration method using two methanol solvent systems with different acidifiers, namely HCl and Citric Acid. The results obtained on the optimization of concentration, pH and temperature on anthocyanin compounds showed mixed results with stable absorbance values in the range 0.2 - 0.8 for certain variables. Keywords: anthocyanin, Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik., UV-Vis Spectrophotometry   ABSTRAKAbelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik.
