In recent days, the thirst for the identification of the potential bioactive compounds from the natural sources like medicinal plants is on continuous demand. Among scientists and academicians, it has created many interdisciplinary platforms for research in establishing new drugs from the natural sources. According to many recent studies, Nigella sativa is believed to be the rich source of quinone, an effective bioactive compound with lots of medicinal values. The purpose of this study was to isolate and estimate the quinone in Nigella sativa seed extracts (aqueous and ethanol). Based on the qualitative and quantitative determination, the extracts were further focused for isolation of quinone from both aqueous and ethanolic  extracts of Nigella sativa. The isolated compound is identified by thin layer chromatography and purity is analyzed in High performance liquid chromatography. From the results we obtained, it was very clear that among the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Nigella sativa, the ethanolic extract has been found with the highest quantity of quinine. This would be predicting that the ethanol extract of Nigella sativa may have good efficacy of pharmacological and therapeutic potentials like antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties when compared with the aqueous extract due to the presence of more quinone.

Silver nanoparticles were biosynthesized from Nigella sativa seed extracts using ethanol and chloroform. The antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles against some drug-resistant bacteria has been established, but further study is needed to assess whether these particles could be an option for the treatment and prevention of drug-resistant microbial infections. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized and screened for their antibacterial properties on resistant strains. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Visible, FTIR, Dynamic light scattering and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis. The antibacterial action of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles was assessed by Microtitre Broth dilution process using Ciprofloxacin as standard, against resistant strains like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Clostridium difficile, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes. The Silver nanoparticles obtained from chloroform extract of Nigella sativa seeds were more effective against Pseudomonas aeuruginosa, Clostridium difficile and Streptococcus pyogenes; than ethanolic seed extracts at 120 µL. Our data propose that the silver nanoparticles are effective against a variety of drug-resistant bacteria, which makes them a potential candidate for use in pharmaceutical products that may help to treat drug-resistant pathogens in different clinical environments. The present study focuses on the ability of phytoconstituents capped with silver nitrate can be used to treat infections caused by resistant bacteria

Nanotechnology offers multiple benefits. Nanomedicine and nanodelivery systems are relatively new areas in nanotechnology. There are number of outstanding applications of the nanomedicine in diagnosing diseases, delivering drugs to its target location, and thus treating human diseases. Here materials in the nanoscale range are employed to serve as means of diagnostic tools and also to deliver precise medicines to specific targeted sites in a controlled manner. Also, metal nanoparticles offer great interest in modern chemistry and materials research because of their applications in diverse fields such as photochemistry, nanoelectronics, optics, and catalysis. Chemistry provides various nanostructured materials either synthetic or isolated from natural sources offers opportunities and challenges in drug delivery and their applications including biomedical imaging, biosensing, diagnostic, and therapy. Thymoquinone, a bioactive compound in Nigella sativa, after encapsulation in lipid nanocarrier, has been found to show six-fold increase in bioavailability in comparison to free thymoquinone. In addition to this, organic nanomaterials have recently become of great interest for photovoltaic applications also.

Background: Multidisciplinary therapy is gaining popularity and drug herb interactions is one of the biggest risk factor contributing to therapeutic failures or toxicities. Apart from analysis of one of such Drug-Herb combinations, this work also aims at emphasizing need for ethnopharmacovigilance practices. Aims and Objectives: Herb-Drug Interaction analysis between Nigella sativa seed ethanolic extract and Phenobarbitone sodium in maximal electroshock seizure in Swiss albino mice with a modified isobolographic analysis. Materials and Methods: Experiment model was Maximal electroshock seizure in Swiss albino mice. Dose ratios of the combination tested were NsEE: Phenobarbitone; 3:1(NsEE75%: Pbt25%), 1:1, 1:3. Analysis was done with modified isobolographic analysis. Results: Nigella sativa seed ethanolic extract exhibit synergistic interaction with Phenobarbitone sodium at 1:1 and 1:3 dose ratios and antagonistic interaction at 3:1 combination. The parameter measured was Hind limb tonic extensor phase in maximal electroshock seizure test in Swiss albino mice. Conclusion: The study showed that interaction profile of Nigella sativa extract-phenobarbitone combination is dose dependent and requires well designed posological studies in epileptic patients to formulate dose adjustment guidelines for multidisciplinary therapy with the herb and Phenobarbitone, also to avoid food drug interactions.

Eight species of pathogenic and contaminated bacteria were Isolated and identified with the biochemical test and make sure of purity with VITIC2 Technical. The bacteria were Acinetobacter baumannii, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoni, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Investigation effect of aqueous, ethanolic, methanolic of Halawi, Khadrawiand Zahdi date seed extracts on the growth of isolated bacteria, the results showed that ethanolic extract was most effective extract compared to other extracts in influencing on the growth of bacteria using Agar Well Diffusion. The most active extract against P. aeruginosa strain was ethanol extract from Zahdi seed with a 22.3+ 0.32mm inhibition zone followed by 20.2 + 0.22 mm for Escherichia coli.

Background: The present study is an attempt to explore the anthelmintic activity of ethanolic extract of flower of Calendula officinalis. Various doses of ethanolic extracts were evaluated for their anthelmintic activity on adult Indian earthworms, Pheretima posthuma. Calendula officinalis Linn has been widely used in homeopathic medicine for the treatment of many diseases. It has been reported to possess many pharmacological activities, which include antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral,antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Methods: The ethanol extract of air dried flowers powder (500g) was prepared by using soxlet apparatus, concentrated and vacuum dried which gave an orange yellowish mass (60.46 g). Extract was subjected to qualitative chemical investigation of phytoconstituents such as glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, tannins, proteins, vitamins, coumarins etc. Results: All extracts were able to show anthelmintic activity at 10mg/mL concentration. The activities are comparable with the standard drugs, piperazine citrate and albendazole. The data were found statistically significantly by using one way Anova at 5% level of significance (p< 0.05). Conclusion: All the doses of ethanolic extract of calendula officinalis showed dose dependent anthelmintic activity in comparison to standard drugs.
