Relationship between uric acid and creatinine in pre-diabetic and diabetic patients: Vidarbha region of Maharashtra

Prediabetes is a glucose homeostasis condition characterized by decreased absorption to glucose or reduced fasting glucose. Both of these are reversible stages of intermediate hyperglycaemia providing an increased type II DM risk. Pre-diabetes can therefore be viewed as a significant reversible stage which could lead to type II DM, and early detection of prediabetes may contribute to type II DM prevention. Prediabetes patients are at high risk for potential type II diabetes, and 70 percent of them appear to develop Type II diabetes within 10 years. The present study includes total 200 subjects that include 100 Prediabetic patients, 50 T2DM patients and 50 healthy individual. Blood samples were collected from the subjects were obtained for FBS, PPBS, Uric acid and Creatinine estimation, from OPD and General Medicine Wards. Present study showed low levels of Serum Uric Acid in prediabetic and T2DM patients were decreased as compared to control group, while the level of creatinine in prediabetic and diabetic were elevated as compared to control group, were not statically significant. Serum Uric Acid was high in control group and low in prediabetic and diabetic patients. Serum creatinine was declined in control group and increased in prediabetic and diabetic patients with increasing Fasting blood glucose level.

Background and Aim: Morbidity and mortality from non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes are increasing rapidly in Pakistan, the prevalence has reached 17.1%. A strong association has been witnessed between type II diabetes mellitus with atherosclerosis and serum uric acid level. The current study aim was to assess the levels of serum uric acid in type II diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 85 diagnosed patients of type II diabetes mellitus in Diabetes hospital, Peshawar and the Department of General Medicine, Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex, Lahore during the period from March 2020 to August 2020.Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) diagnosed patients 85 and healthy control 30 were evaluated in this study. The level of hyperuricemia was defined for women > 6 mg/dl and men >7 mg/dl in men. Results: In this study, a total of 85 diabetic diagnosed patients and 30 healthy controls were enrolled. No significant differences were there in the baseline characteristics like anthropometric and socio-demographic parameters. The mean age for diagnosed and control cases was 58.6±8.7 and 56.5±7.6 years with an age range of 40 and 80 years. Hyperuricemia proportion among diabetic patients was 12.13% while none of the control cases had hyperuricemia. The uric acid means level increased from 4.29±0.81 mg/dl with a diabetic duration between 3 and 4 years to 4.59±0.99 mg/dl with a diabetic duration of 5 to 7 years. Furthermore, mean serum uric acid level reached 6.50±1.08 in cases with diabetic duration 8 to 12 years. Statistically, a significant association was found between diabetic duration and serum uric acid. Also, a positive correlation was found in hyperlipidemia, serum uric acid levels, and hypertension. Conclusion: In diabetic patients serum uric acid levels were found to be significantly higher. Diabetic patients had hypertension, elevated serum uric acid levels, and high triglycerides with dyslipidemia. The rise in serum uric acid levels is proportional to the duration of diabetes. Background: Hyperuricemia is associated with type 2 diabetes, which is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies resulting from defects in insulin action. The present study wascarried out to look for any association between uric acid and Type II Diabetes Mellitus and also status of triacylglycerol level among those patients.Methods: The blood samples were collected 100 diabetic and 100 non-diabetic individuals in the department of biochemistry and then analyzed for estimation of blood glucose, Uric Acid and Triacylglycerol level.Results: The average level of serum uric acid in diabetic patients was higher (5.706±1.617) in comparison to non diabetic subjects (4.322±0.784) with statistically significant difference (p≤0.05). For female the result indicate there was a positive correlation between (FBS and triglycerides) and (triglycerides and uric acids) which was statistically significant (r =-0.465, n = 41, p = 0.002) and(r =-0.370, n = 41, p = 0.017) respectively.Conclusions: This study documents that hyperuricemia is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, the serum triacylglycerol and serum uric acid is also found to be associated risk factors for diabetic complications. BACKGROUND:Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a major non-communicable disease resulting from insulin resistance and is associated with cardiovascular,neurological and renal complications.Recent studies show association of hyperuricemia and Diabetes Mellitus.Uric acid increases oxidative stress that leads to vascular dysfunction and high intra glomerular pressure leading to renal complications.High serum creatinine is an indicator of renal compromise. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate serum uric acid and serum creatinine levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and to find association between them. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in Osmania general hospital. Fifty cases of established Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus formed the study group and 50 normal healthy individuals formed the control group. Serum uric acid, Fasting Blood Glucose (FBS) and serum creatinine were estimated by colorimetric enzymatic methods on Beckman coulter AU5800.Mean values were compared in cases and controls using student t- test.Study group was further studied under 2 subgroups with serum Uric acid < 7 mg/dl and ≥7 mg/dl.In these 2 subgroups the association of Serum uric acid with FBS and creatinine was analysed statistically. RESULTS: Serum uric acid were found high in cases(7.63+/- 3.36)as compared to controls(4.48+/- 1.09) p value < 0.001.Serum creatinine were also high in cases(1.59+/- 1.39 )as compared to controls ( 0.87+/- 0.29) p value <0.005.Study subgroup with serum uric acid ≥7 mg/dl was associated with high creatinine and high fasting blood sugar levels when compared to subgroup with serum uric acid <7 mg/dl. CONCLUSION: Our study showed increased serum uric acid and serum creatinine levels in cases when compared to controls.There was significant association between high serum uric acid and high creatinine levels in cases.Therefore,it is important to measure serum uric acid and serum creatinine levels in diabetics for early detection of renal pathology.

Objects: The study's purpose was to see if there was a link between netrin.1 and type II diabetes patients. Methodology: The present study carried out on (45) patients affected with diabetes mellitus from (120) persons were examined in the education of Diwaniyah hospital from 6th September to the 4th December 2020. The study includes measurement of the body mass index, fasting blood glucose level, HbA1c, lipid profile and level of netrin-1. Results: Our findings were revealed the netrin-1 level was significantly lower in the diabetes (1205.36±753.09) compared to control group (1477.79±700.26; P < 0.01). Our observations were appeared Significantly higher levels of blood cholesterol, TG, LDL, and VLDL-C and In diabetes individuals, there was a significant drop There was a 0.05 difference in HDL-C levels when compared to healthy controls. Conclusion: These findings indicate that low netrin1 concentration in serum are strongly linked to the occurrence of type II diabetes.

Introduction: The aim of the present study is to profile the serum antioxidative enzymes, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) level in Type II diabetes mellitus patients in comparison to healthy volunteers in the South Indian population.Methodology: A prospective, observational, case–control study was conducted for 1 year with a total of 120 patients including 90 Type II diabetes patients (case group) and 30 healthy volunteers (control group). Blood was collected from these volunteers, and serum levels of CAT, GPx, and SOD were estimated. In addition, they were also monitored for the fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and postprandial blood glucose. Data were statistically analyzed applying unpaired t-test and Pearson correlation with the statistical significance of p<0.05.Results: The diabetes patient group showed significant higher levels of glycated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose and postprandial blood glucose (p<0.0001). There was asignificant lower level in the RBC levels of superoxide dismutase in case group compared to control group 3859.00±381.8 (mean+SD) and 5862.7±209.45 (mean+SD) Units per gram Hb, (t-value 27.35, p-Value <0.0001). Catalase and Glutathione peroxidase RBC levels also showed significant lower levels in the case group compared to the control group (catalase 212.7±19.08 (mean±SD) and 396.47±10.83 (mean±SD) Units per gram Hb; T value=50.07 and p<0.0001)(Glutathione peroxidase11.7 ±01.09 (mean +SD) and 18.6 ± 01.00 (mean +SD) Units per gram Hb; t value=30.26 and p<0.0001).Conclusion: A significant reduction in serum levels of antioxidative enzymes, CAT, GPx, and SOD was observed in the South Indian Type II diabetes patient population.

ABSTRACT Objective This study has been undertaken to study the effect of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its duration on hearing. Materials and methods The present study was conducted on 100 persons of age group 20 to 45 years. All subjects included in the study were divided into two groups. Group I: 50 patients suffering from T2DM (fasting blood sugar ≥ 126 mg/dL and postprandial ≥ 200 mg/dL) of either sex, in the age group of 20 to 45 years. Group II: 50 healthy volunteers in the age group of 20 to 45 years, of either sex were included in control group. Hearing assessment was done by using pure tone audiometry (PTA). Results In diabetic patients, the mean threshold in the PTA was higher at all frequencies as compared with healthy controls, and there was a positive correlation between the duration of diabetes and hearing loss. Conclusion Various audiological investigations have revealed that there is a strong association of diabetes with sensorineural part. The prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in type II diabetics observed was 64%. In the majority of the patients, the hearing loss was bilateral, affecting mid and higher frequencies from 2 to 8 kHz. Hence, to conclude, we can say that the high prevalence of hearing loss in T2DM supports the importance of audiometric evaluation in such patients. ABSTRACT Introduction Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder. Prevalence of diabetes is increasing globally and it is one of the major health problems of the 21st century. The disturbance in serum magnesium (SMg) has been reported among patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Hypomagnesemia has negative impact on glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Aim This study was undertaken to know the prevalence of hypomagnesemia in patients with type II diabetes mellitus and its relation with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The study was conducted on 200 patients with type II diabetes and 100 healthy controls at RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital, Bengaluru. Results Out of 200 diabetic patients, 115 (57%) had hypomagnesemia. We observed mean SMg (1.7 mg) significantly low in diabetic patients compared with controls (2.1 mg). We also found HbA1c was high (9%) in hypomagnesemia patients. We found that diabetic hypomagnesemic patients had high mean fasting blood glucose (242.6 mg%) and postprandial blood sugar (313 mg%) than controls. Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which occurs due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin hormone and the diabetic patients are more prone to develop stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, blindness, coronary artery disease, neuropathy and gangrene. Increased uric acid levels in serum are one of the metabolic abnormalities associated with diabetes mellitus type 2. Objectives: The purpose of the research is to assess the status of serum uric acid in non-diabetic and diabetic subjects. Study Design: Cross Sectional Comparative study. Setting: Department of Medicine Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, Karachi. Period: Feb 2018 till September 2018. Material & Methods: A total of 80 subjects of both sexes were taken and divided into two groups. Fasting glucose levels, serum uric acid were performed by enzymatic method. Results: This study showed significantly raised levels of serum uric acid and Fasting blood glucose (FBS) in diabetic type 2 subjects when compared to non-diabetic subjects(p<0.01). Conclusion: The results of the present study suggests that compared to non‐diabetic subject’s diabetic subjects have significantly higher level of uric acid.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of impaired fasting glucose in first degree relatives of people with Type-II diabetes and its association with BMI. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Diabetic clinic of Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore from July to December 2017. Individuals aged ≥35 years, first degree relatives of people with Type-II diabetes, were selected and their fasting blood glucose levels were checked twice a week apart. Study participants were divided into 3 groups. Group-I were those with normal fasting blood glucose (FBS: <100mg/dl), Group-II were those with impaired fasting glucose (100-125mg/dl), considered as high risk and Group-III included those who turned out to be having frank diabetes (FBS: ≥126mg/dl). Exclusion criteria were known diabetes and pregnancy. Proportions of impaired fasting glucose levels versus BMI were compared using Chi-square test. Significance was considered at P <0.001. Results: A total of hundred subjects were included in the study with the mean age of 44.27 years. Sixty percent participants had normal FBS, 31% showed impaired FBS and 09% had frank diabetes (P <0.001). Significant association was found between impaired fasting glucose and BMI, as with increasing BMI the frequency of impaired fasting glucose increases.
