The development of telecommunications technology as a communication necessity at this time has been growing rapidly, needed a means of transmission media that is able to distribute information with large capacity and capable data transfer speeds. Implementing using Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology, the Fiber to The Home (FTTH) service reaches the user to meet the speed of 2GBps. This study aims to identify the causes of increased attenuation or disturbance in FTTH. The method used in this study is to analyze the attenuation value of each core at the sites studied on the FTTH network at PT Telkom. The total attenuation value of fiber optic cables that are calculated from OLT to ONT must be within the specified reasonable limit of 15-28 dB. The caused of the increase in the attenuation value of fiber optic cables such as the number of splice / connections on each cable, and the occurrence of cable indentations above 45°. To overcome the attenuation value that exceeds the reasonable limit can be done by replacing the fiber cable with attenuation of 0.35dB to fiber cable with attenuation of 0.22 dB, so that the attenuation of the fiber optic cable is at the specified reasonable limit.

Nowadays, one of the trends of information and communication networks development is the provision within the shortest time of a larger number of telecommunication services to network users. Currently, connection of subscribers to xDSL communication channels provided by public switched telephone networks (PSTN) is widespread. Providers of classic telephony make active use of these networks due to the low cost of the connection of a subscriber. An obvious disadvantage of this connection type is the limited data transfer rate. Some Internet providers rapidly develop ETTH (Ethernet To The Home) networks. The advantage of ETTH networks is the targeting of the delivery of communication services to subscribers. One of the disadvantages is the operation of a network at the Ethernet level with all typical for this protocol features. The practice of optical networking has existed for many years; however, the basic approach to optical networking is based on the use of active equipment from the access node to users. PON-based (Passive Optical Network) FTTH architecture (Fiber To The Home) is as a rule, compatible with the Ethernet Protocol. The article shows the advantages of the deployment of PON-based FTTH networks, in particular, saving of fiber-optic lines in the area from the optical splitters to the Central telephone exchange or access point by using relevant ports. The article provides the description of access networks architecture applying Ethernet FTTH and PON technologies, and also discusses the prospects for further development of the above mentioned networks.

This paper deals with data transfer from one computer to another. The serial ports of the computer are used. MAX 232 is used to convert RS 232 logic to TTL logic and then an optical transmitter circuit is used to transmit data via fiber optic cable. The optical transmitter circuit has an LED which is matched with the cable. At the receiver an optical receiver circuit is used which receives data using a photo diode and a MAX 232 again to convert TTL logic to RS 232 for the serial port at the receiving end computer. The desired baud rate can be set. Although the internet can be used, but due to its time consuming nature, one can implement data transfer using wireless medium, though at a relatively high cost. The need, therefore, is felt for fiber optic communication which is cheaper and more suitable for the task. It is cheaper than wireless medium and is prone to lesser loss as compared to wireless medium.

Copper wire cable and fiber optic cable are two communication media that are widely used in building data communication networks in today’s modern era. For network administrators, choosing the right type of cable to build a network is a must. Air temperature is one of the external factors that can affect the performance of network equipment. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the differences in performance between the use of fiber optic cables and copper wire cables which are capable of transferring data of 1 Gigabit per second. Performance measurement analysis includes the ability to transfer data from both media such as latency, throughput, and packet loss. For testing latency and throughput is done by sending as many as 65,000 data 30 times for each media. Whereas for packet loss testing is done by sending 10,000 data within 1 minute using test bandwidth on the Mikrotik router. From the test results, it can be seen that there is an effect of temperature changes on the performance of copper wire cable and fiber optic cable. The higher the air temperature, the packet loss, and latency will increase. As for the throughput value, the temperature only affects the throughput value on fiber optic cable and does not affect throughput on the copper wire cable.

Fiber optic is chosen to be the backbone channel for telecommunication purposes, in this case the connection between nodes b. Therefore, to determine the performance of a fiber optic network, a fiber optic communication network performance application is required. The performance discussed in this study is total attenuation, Optical Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER). The method used to obtain the attenuation value along the length of the cable and the total attenuation is by measuring the fiber optic network with an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). After taking measurements, the data is processed to produce output in the form of network performance, namely the total attenuation value, OSNR and BER. The results of the accuracy of the two comparisons are indicated by the percentage error rate. Based on the overall data tested, a value of 5.53% was obtained for comparison between the theoretical results and the value of the measurement results and obtained a value of 5.10% for the comparison between the measurement value and the application calculation value. Then the relationship between total attenuation with OSNR and the relationship between OSNR and BER is an inverse relationship.

Based on the survey data of optical fiber service, the communication network uses optical fiber transmission medium is not maximal yet, because there are some errors in the network, such as the percentage of Network Post Dialing Delay in system is 97.5%, that means there is 2.5% of error a delay occurs in the network when making a call. This research was conducted by analyzing the fiber attenuation of fiber-optic communication systems performance on the link Padang-Bukittinggi in PT. Telkom Padang, SKSO division which uses single mode fiber optic cable types G655. Instrument in this study is the Power Meter and OTDR JDSU MTS-6000 type. Link Power Budget method is used to determine the performance of optical fiber communication systems caused by attenuation based on the value of the received power output. Obtained results on the link Padang-Bukittinggi highest attenuation occurs in core 5 with 26.7226 dB attenuation value and cable length 115 016 km, and in core 7 with 26.1812 dB and cable length 94 462 km. This value is still below of PT. Telkom standard with 28.10352 dB for core 5. While the attenuation value at 7 cores exceeds standard attenuation values, with 24.18186 dB, so the performance of the core is declared bad and needs to be evaluated. From optical fiber attenuation value, result of the link power budget analysis is obtained from the calculation of the value of Rx is smaller when compared with -27 dBm the value of Rx sensitivity, it can be said the performance of optical fiber communication systems on the link in the normal state and can be used to operate because the power output can be accepted by the receiver in the device. Keywords: fiber optic cable, optical fiber attenuation, SKSO, link power budget.
