Of the many subjects with which the curricula of our secondary schools are lo ded, none can be so readily tinted with romantic colours, or so easily illustrated by adventurous tales, and withal be so successfully employed in developing general reasoning ability, as can geography. If Popooatapetl and his brother mountains, and some other of those alluring names from atlases, would only lead the minds of some of our scholars to take the Golden Road to Samarkand', teachers of geography might be forgiven, if' they were seen to smile, when a pupil was heard to murmur the 'unpardonable sin', "I dimly heard the masterts voice." The bored expression, familiar accompaniment to "towns and products geography", should find no place in the class room today. Before a map of the world what imaginings should stir the mind. The islands of the Pacific, palm dotted, coral ringed; the impenetrable jungles of Africa and South America, threaded by mighty rivers; the curious rites and fantastic festivals of the Far East; the lure of Everest, and the call of the great White spaces to scientist and explorer; the ploughing steamer carrying homeward the wanderer, the flashlight signal from the masthead, "All ready to land you!" as the leviathan airship of the future finishes its journey.

Before he met death by his own hand in 1946, Colin Ross was one of Germany's most famous journalist-travelers. No less than fifteen books and a host of articles described his visits to countries from the Arctic to the Pacific and Haha Whenua to Africa, “ mit Kind und Kegel und Kamera ”—“ bag, baggage, and camera.” His greatest renown—or notoriety—dated from the Nazi era. Hitler himself said, “A man like Colin Ross, for example, gave me infinitely more precious information on the subject” of the Far East than all of the professional diplomats. Ross was, indeed, regarded with some exaggeration as “ one of Hitler's foremost geopoliticians,” and, probably with even greater exaggeration, as a paid spy for the Third Reich. When he visited South America in 1919-1920, however, it was suspicions of Bolshevist rather than Nazi inclinations which placed obstacles in the path of high ambitions.

The paper summarizes information on chromosome numbers (CNs) of the Grass species (Poaceae) in the flora of Russian Federation, obtained on the original material, most part - from the Russian Far East (RFE). In some species the CNs are known in Russia or in the world only from RFE, in some – from one locality or few, or from one subregion of RFE. The grass species in RFE often occur in mountain regions and near seacoasts; some species are endemics, some were studied near the limits of their geographical distribution areas. The diversity of CNs, the special features of the CNs distribution in some grass groups are discussed. The alien species are abundant in RFE, and their CNs are also involved in the study. For karyologically polymorphous species further studies are needed.

The article describes the main stages in the development of economic - geographical research at the Pacific Institute of Geography (now Pacific Geographical Institute) since its organization. The authors identified five such stages and presented the most important results of economic and geographical research accomplished in their laboratory of spatial-economic structures for 50 years. Scientific directions of these researches were determined by the general tasks solved by the Pacific Geographical Institute, in first turn, comprehensive forecasting and geographical research of different-scale geosystems of the Far East of Russia in the ‘land-ocean’ contact zone. The selection of the research stages was based on changes in the topics of the laboratory’s research work. For a long time its main topic was in the studies of multi-ranked territorial and economic structures of the Far East, and geographical factors of their development including natural resource and geopolitical ones. The main research activities of the laboratory staff at different stages included theoretical and methodological studies of geographic space and different-ranked spatial systems; geographical and geopolitical factors in the formation of multi-ranked territorial and economic structures, including transboundary and aqua-territorial ones; working out of proposals to the state programs of the sustainable development of regions; methods of researching the productive-natural relations in local and regional territorial-production systems; assessing the territorial combinations of natural resources; studying the features of the transformation of territorial and sectoral structures; zoning the territory and coastal waters of the Far East, etc. Separate economic and geographical studies are also of great practical importance. In first turn, there are proposals developed in the laboratory for strategies and programs of the socio-economic development of the Far East, Primorsky Kray, Vladivostok agglomeration and other territories.

ABSTRACTThis essay is part of a reflection whose purpose is to discuss and clarify some points and tensions around gender issues from the perspective of embodied consciousness, corporeality and temporality. The texts to be discussed for this purpose are the authors Edgar Morin: Introduction to Complex Thought (1994) and The Mind Sorted Bien (2001); Jacques Luc Nancy, Community DOA (2000) and Merleau-Ponty (1975) Phenomenology of Perception, authors who have allowed a glimpse of new theoretical contributions to gender. The challenge arises from the Philosophical Anthropology is trying to understand the “human phenomenon”, from a metaphysical perspective, according to this conception, the human being is the result of what he does to himself in his relationship with nature. To start this reflection, it is necessary to recognize that it arises from the Phenomenology, which is also considered a philosophy for which the world is always “already there” before reflection as an inalienable presence and allows to account for the space, time and "lived" world. Hurssel the theorist who founded this movement says: I'm not the result or crosslinking of the many coincidences that determine my body or my “psyche” but rather, all I know the world, I know from a prospect or mine experience the world without which the symbols of science would not want to say anything. (Husserl, 1913. p. 369-370).

The study of the manifold ethnocultural heritage of Russia is one of the paramount tasks, potentially the most important area of Russian humanities. At the same time, the literary traditions of the peoples of our country, representing a unique civilizational integrity, spiritual wealth, are of significant scientific interest. Focusing on the problems of the development of "minority" literature and the contexts of its updating, it must be emphasized that this is a complex and theoretically insufficiently comprehended artistic and aesthetic, ethnopsychological, linguistic phenomenon. It should be recognized that at present there is a need for fundamental comparative studies and the development of new approaches to the study of close and distant cultures, literature, and models of the world. The article discusses the realities of the development of a separate "minority" literature at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries on the example of poetic texts by the Nenets poet Prokopiy Yavtysy. A brief description of the main stages of the formation of the Nenets literature is given, a number of its key features that are important for heterogeneous typological, comparative studies are highlighted. P. Yavtysy’s work represents a set of artistic features and codes of expressiveness that are common to many literary traditions of the native minorities of the Far North, Siberia, and the Far East, and there are also separate stadial and typological correspondences with Finno-Ugric literature of Russia. The main poetic methods and contexts of Yavtysy’s poems are established, the most representative figurative and symbolic strata, plot and situational blocks are determined, the linguistic and poetic component is interpreted. The deep genetic connection of the poetic system of the Nenets author with the folklore and mythological ideas of the Nenets is emphasized. The question of the influence of socialist realism on the artistic rhetoric of P. Yavtysy is raised. In the article, a separate place is occupied by the problem of translating the works by the Nenets author into Russian.
