Social responsibility of the media as an effective result of solutions journalism

The relevance of the research shows solutions journalism as a necessary tool for providing information to the audience that emphasizes problem solving rather than the problems themselves, enhancing the relevance of the text, clarifying its purpose, and encouraging readers to take action. The main objective of the article is to investigate the peculiarities of solutions journalism as a modern phenomenon in journalism and to analyze the importance to implement social responsibility in media structures in order to provide solutions to existing problems, not just describe them. The methodology of the article includes: approaches to the definition of the concepts of «solutions journalism» have been explored through analysis and synthesis; using the systematic method, the criteria for defining «solutions journalism» and its difference from similar terms are formed; the comparative method to analyse the audience involvement in solving social problems before and after the emergence of «solutions journalism» was carried out; content analysis made it possible to examine the use of the terms «problem» and «solution» by society in the Internet; SWOT analysis explores peculiarities of solutions journalism; the cognitive mapping method identifies cause-and-effect relations to the importance of creating social projects by media structures. Research findings show that experts in solutions journalism explain that this approach complements the traditional role of the press, giving a fuller perspective on issues for society. Moreover, under the initiative of Sparknews, an international network of positive-impact solutions journalism, a day dedicated to solutions journalism – Impact Journalism Day – was launched. Moreover, media not only transform their texts into solutions journalism, but also create projects that help solving current problems, including the BBC's «100 Women» Project, CNN's #MyFreedomDay Project, the NY Times's «1619 Project», as well as the social project «People of Ideas +. #ForgetAboutAge» by the 1+1 Media Group. As a conclusion, we can say that in the modern world a rethinking of the role of the media is needed. Journalism cannot continue to cover only problems, and to suppress the readers by illuminating the challenges facing humanity. It is important to promote «value-added journalism», which we call as «solutions journalism» in the article.

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Islamic Corporate Social Responsibility in moderating the effect of zakat on Islamic commercial banks’ financial performance. Out of 13 Islamic commercial bank listed by Otoritas Jasa Keuangan from 2012 to 2017, there were only five banks reporting Statement of Zakat Fund Sources and Disbursements. Hence, the final samples of this study consist of 30 observation data. Secondary data collected from 30 annual reports were gathered through documentation. This study utilizes moderated regression analysis to test three research hypotheses. The results shows several findings. Firstly, the amount of corporate zakat being reported in the Statement of Zakat Fund Sources and Disbursements has positive impact on Islamic banks’ financial performance. Secondly, Islamic CSR as measured by Islamic reporting index developed by Belal et al. (2015) has negative impact on Islamic Banks’ financial performance. Thirdly, the role of Islamic CSR in moderating the effect of zakat on financial performance was confirmed.

Objectives of the Study: The purpose of this study was to examine newspaper framing of the activities of the EFCC under President Buhari, using four purposively selected newspapers. In doing this, the researchers focused on the prevalence of frames, most prominent frames, and interpretations they gave to the activities of EFCC. Methodology: Content analysis and critical discourse analysis were adopted as the research methods. By means of the constructed week sampling technique, 288 editions of the selected newspapers years were studied. Results: It was found that six (6) frames constituted 75% frame prevalence rate, while two (2) frames constituted 15% non-prevalence rate. The corruption-combating/criminalisation frame was the most prominent. Interpretation of the reports revealed that some newspapers presented EFCC as victimisers, while some appraised its activities at mitigating graft in Nigeria. Application/implications: The implication of these results is that journalists need to improve in their framing anti-corruption efforts as part of their social responsibility to the Nigerian society. Originality/ Novelty: This study has contributed to our understanding of the role of the media in promoting good governance and accountability in a developing country like Nigeria.

With the pace of development and competitiveness, innovation plays an important role to capture the market share. Various countries have effective strategies to enhance Research and Development (R&D) and exchange value added products in international market. So, based on this the aim of this research is to examine the role of R&D, industrial design and charges for intellectual property in innovative exports in South Korean economy. Time series data for the period 1998 to 2017, Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) models are used to determine the dynamic interrelationship among the study variables. In summary, the overall results show that there is co-integration rank of in both trace test and value test at 1% significance level. Moreover, OLS and GMM findings depict that there is significant and positive coefficient for ID & RD which represent that they have positive impact on HT. Whereas, the IP displays a negative and significant relationship with high technology exports accordingly. Lastly, the diagnostic tests show that model is stable for the study time period and result is reliable. The current study also suggests some policy implications which can enhance innovative export products of South Korea while enhancing R&D.

The use of mobile telecommunications devices for commercial transactions, coined mobile (m-) commerce, has been an emerging trend since the late 1990s. As the phenomenal growth of the Internet and mobile devices has continued unabated, the inevitable convergence of these two streams of technologies has occurred, promising a plethora of mobile data services to the handset user. Although these services have been considerably hyped in the media, and adoption has been somewhat patchy and limited, it does signal the emergence of a range of innovative value added services. With further developments in technology and markets, further services will appear, bringing new revenue streams. One potential area of m-commerce development is in location-based services (LBS). LBS are heralded as the next major class of value added services that mobile network operators can offer their customers. Using a range of network- and handset-based positioning techniques, operators will be able to offer entirely new services and improvements on current ones. Popular examples cited include emergency caller location, people or asset tracking, navigation, location-based information, or geographically sensitive billing. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the technologies, applications and strategic issues associated with the commercialisation of LBS. The chapter concludes with some predictions on the role of LBS in m-commerce.


The echo of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is often heard in the contemporary business management since the last four decades. CSR continuously getting attention due to the ever changing business landscape. As CSR marks its notion of importance in the business context, its roles, and values among academicians who are entrusted to educate the future generation remains ambiguous. Current research aims to look into the impact of perceived roles of ethics and social responsibility (PRESOR) and Internal CSR on the Employee Engagement among academicians in the education setting. Judgemental sampling method is used to locate the targeted respondents and data collected is analysed using Partial Least Squares Equation Modeling. The results reveal that PRESOR has a positive impact on Internal CSR. Internal CSR has no significant impact on Employee Engagement among academicians and its’ indirect effect between PRESOR and Employee Engagement is also found to be insignificant. The findings contribute by providing some insights on the role of ethics and social responsibility among academicians in the education sector. Education institutions may wish to look into other means to increase academicians’ employee engagement instead of ethics and social responsibility.

Changing of media consumption in the digital age is the object of focus attention of both Russian and foreign researchers. Modern cultural studies note the increasing role of video content in the media environment. Taking into account current trends, libraries more often create their own video materials to implement various goals and objectives. Thus, creation of own video content is rapidly becoming an integral part of the work of modern library. However, despite some established experience of libraries in this area, there is still not enough research of general and theoretical nature on the content, guidelines and prospects for the development of activities related to the creation and use of library video content, and there is no its classification.The purpose of this work is to conduct analysis of the video content in libraries, identify the most common materials, as well as to determine the prospects for using this tool to reach their own goals. The article discusses definitions of the term “video content”. The author presents the main types of videos produced by libraries, their characteristics and features. Special attention is paid to video projects of libraries in Russia. The article reveals the experience of the Astrakhan Library for Youth named after B. Shakhovsky in using its own video content. The paper discusses the issue of classification of video materials produced by libraries. The author proposes the following classification of library videos: video review, virtual book exhibition, webinar (online seminar or web conference), interview, humorous video, webcast, event announcement, video report and booktrailer. The author indicates the main reasons hindering the demand for library video content among the wide range of Internet users and gives the rationale for the necessity and importance of this type of activity and proposes possible prospects for using own video content of libraries. Thanks to its presence, the library ceases to be a closed institution storing knowledge within itself that produces positive impact on its image. Using means of communication that are understandable to a person of visual culture, it changes stereotypes and demonstrates its modern capabilities.

The purpose of this paper is to board the issues dealing with the ethics code of behave, and the role of leadership on motivation of staff to lead up the effectiveness and quality work at organization. The paper presents ethic standards and their importance for the success and competitive priorities for organizations and institutions. The elaboration of paper is carried using normative and comparative method attended by secondary source of data in the form of papers, journals, books, web-pages and manuals of organizations. There are studied principles of the Code of Ethics in two organizations, Bus Eirenann of Ireland and Kosovo Privatization Agency of the Republic of Kosovo, handling the practical implementation of ethic codes in both cases. Next to written policies for ethics there exist failures and mistakes on the ethics at working place that is present in everyday life as a result of improper behave of someone. Ethic behaves have had the positive impact at organizations, while non-ethic behaves have serious impact on the development of staff and it keeps away incitement of tacit knowledge, obstructs innovations and creative work. Development and approval of ethic code and ethic practices at organization will not stop non-ethic behaves, but will give to people a kind of measurement versus which behave may be measured. Executive leaders at organizations and institutions should assess if the written or unwritten code is not respected so that the employees to feel safe for their integrity and appreciated.

The contemporary research in the field of economic and legal assessment of e-trade development, published in Russia, provides a general description of the situation and prospects for the development of international online transactions. At the same time, the aggregate features of taxation of cross-border e-commerce (which is the paper’s subject) are highlighted, without focusing on indirect methods of tax regulation (which are the object of the paper). Based on previous theoretical, methodological and practical studies, the authors systematize the knowledge about cross-border e-commerce operations’ indirect tax regulation both at the national and interstate level, defining the main approaches to taxation in this area. They also propose to focus on the priority of the regulatory (stimulating) role of taxes in their application as tools for influencing international online trading transactions. The main provisions of the paper reveal the principles and features of collecting value-added tax (VAT), excise, customs, and postal duties in the field of export-import e-trade operations with goods, digital content, and electronic services in national tax systems. In addition, this paper characterizes the main directions of international coordination of cross-border e-commerce indirect taxation. The authors have proven their hypothesis that the rapid development of cross-border e-trade in the modern world makes this field of international economic relations attractive enough to enhance the fiscal role of indirect taxation at the national level; however, the difficulties for the global economy early in the third decade of the 21st century require prioritizing the regulating (stimulating) role of indirect taxes to support global economic and trade operations growth, including its electronic segment.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on financial performance (FP) of Indian steel industry in terms of value-added (VAM), profitability (PM), market (MM) and growth measures (GM).Design/methodology/approachIt is an empirical study using secondary data of 40 companies for 14 years collected from CSR/annual reports/official websites of the companies and Prowess database. The panel regression analysis, MANOVA and univariate ANOVA have been conducted to examine the impact of CSR on FP.FindingsThe result indicates a positive impact of CSR on FP in terms of VAM, PM and GM, thereby indicating that more investments in CSR will generate wealth for shareholders, enhance profitability and sales. Moreover, this study shows no noticeable relationship between CSR and MM.Social implicationsThis study contributes to the literature on the CSR–FP relationship and also has implications for managers, investors and other stakeholders. Companies with higher CSR rating create a brand image, attract proficient employees, get greater profit, loyal customers and have less possibility of bribery and corruption. This study may result in being influential to companies confined not only to this sector but also reaching to the others, thus inspiring them to contribute their share of profit for the welfare of society.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, it is the first comprehensive study to examine the impact of CSR on FP of Indian steel industry by considering four dimensions for measuring FP. It provides evidence about the relationship between CSR and FP.
