<p><strong>Identification of </strong>secondary metabolites, antibacterial and antioxidant activities assay of methanol extract of sea cucumber <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Stichopus</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">hermanii</span> were conducted from May to July 2011 at the Natural Products Laboratory, Research Center for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Sea cucumber used in this study comes from South Lampung waters. Objective of the study was to get information of secondary metabolites, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanol extract of sea cucumber <span style="text-decoration: underline;">S.</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">hermanii</span>. The extraction method which used in this experiment was the maceration method using methanol solvent. Identification of secondary metabolites was performed through observing reaction of colors, precipitation, and foaming. Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanol extract from sea cucumber were tested using agar diffusion method and reducing of free radicals 1.1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) respectively. The results showed that secondary metabolites identified in the methanol extract of sea cucumber <span style="text-decoration: underline;">S.</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">hermanii</span> were saponin and steroids. Both secondary metabolites had antibacterial activities against <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Staphylococcus</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">aureus</span>, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Vibrio</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">eltor</span> and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Bacilus</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">subtilis</span>. The analysis of antioxidant activity showed that the IC<sub>50</sub> value of methanol extract of sea cucumber <span style="text-decoration: underline;">S.</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">hermanii</span> was about 65.08 ppm. Bohadschia sp. is one of the sea cucumber species that has potential to be developed as a source of antibacterial from the sea. Samples of sea cucumber Bohadschia sp. used in this study collected from the Ratai bay waters, Lampung. This study aims to determine the type of secondary metabolites, antibacterial activity and compound composition analysis containing in the sea cucumber extract. Identification of secondary metabolites by observation of color reactions, precipitation and foam. The method used to antibacterial activity test was the agar diffusion method, while identification of the composition of compounds performed with Gas Chromatogaphy-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) method.Top of FormThe results showed that the type of secondary metabolites contained in the extract of sea cucumber Bohadschia sp. were steroids and saponins. The extract of sea cucumber Bohadschia sp. showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Vibrio eltor. Results of GC-MS were 12 compounds and have a similarity index same or more than 90%. All compounds consist of organosilicon cyclic, fatty acid, steroid, cyclo alkene and alkena. The compound with biggest abundance was cholest-5-en-3-yl nonanoate (4.89%) and retention time was 37.370 minutes.


Annona muricata is one of the important herbal plant that are widely used to treat antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, antimalarial, anticancer, antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In the present study, extraction procedure was carried out in few step processes method. The extract contains high percentage of steroid, alkaloid, flavonoid, phenolic and saponin. The extract was used to study the antioxidant activity; antibacterial activities and anticancer activity by standard methods. The antioxidant activity was studied by using radical scavenging DPPH, FRAP and H2O2 method and disc diffusion method. The results of antibacterial activity of the following bacteria’s such as Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, E.coli shows the maximum zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus which is around 1.7 cm. The anticancer activity was carried out by MTT assay using Hep-G2 as cell line and results are reported in the paper.

Antioxidant activity tests of methanol extracts of velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) and velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) in coffee preparations have been previously carried out by several researchers. This present study aims to examine the phytochemical and antioxidant activities of methanol extracts of Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations. The methanol extract was tested for the phytochemical and antioxidant activities by applying DPPH (1,1-Dhiphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) method. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the methanol extracts of the Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations contained secondary metabolites of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and tannins. The outcomes of the antioxidant activity test revealed that the methanol extracts of the Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations had antioxidant activities, as indicated by the IC50 values of 42.09 ppm and 37.23 ppm. It was also revealed that the antioxidant content of Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations was stronger than the content in the velvet beans alone.

This study focused on total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the leaves and stems ofPassiflora quadrangularis,P. maliformis, andP. edulisextracted using three solvents: petroleum ether, acetone, and methanol. The maximum extraction yields of antioxidant components from the leaves and stems were isolated using methanol extracts ofP. edulis(24.28%) andP. quadrangularis(9.76%), respectively. Among the leaf extracts, the methanol extract ofP. maliformishad the significantly highest TPC and the strongest antioxidant activity, whereas among the stem extracts, the methanol extract ofP. quadrangularisshowed the highest phenolic amount and possessed the strongest antioxidant activity. The antibacterial properties of thePassifloraspecies were tested using the disc diffusion method against 10 human pathogenic bacteria. The largest inhibition zone was observed for the methanol extract ofP. maliformisagainstB. subtilis. Generally, extracts from thePassifloraspecies exhibit distinct inhibition against Gram-positive but not Gram-negative bacteria. Based on the generated biplot, three clusters of bacteria were designated according to their performance towards the tested extracts. The present study revealed that methanol extracts of thePassifloracontain constituents with significant phenolic, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical uses.

Abstract The focus of this paper was to assess the phytochemical composition, the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the crude extracts of the aerial parts of Ferula lutea. Four new compounds were isolated from this genus, and their structures were primarily established by extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D spectroscopic techniques. Total phenolics and flavonoids containing in ethyl acetate (AcOEt) and n-butanol (n-BuOH) extracts were quantified [199.1-184.02 mg gallic acid equivalent / g of dry weight], flavonoids [70.24-65.95 mg quercetin / g dry weight]. DDPH scavenging and phosphomolybdenum methods were used to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activity. The obtained results showed a significant antioxidant activity of the two aerial parts. Correlation analysis between the DPPH values and those for TAC indicates the possibility of the two models for evaluating antioxidants power from medicinal plants. Dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), AcOEt and n-BuOH extracts were screened against two gram-negative [Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Pseudo aeruginosa (P.aer)] and two gram-positive [Staphylococcus aureus (S.aur) and Bacillus (Bacil.)] bacteria using disc diffusion method. The results indicate a good inhibition of CH2Cl2 and EtAct extracts on the growth of (Bacil. and E.coli). Furthermore n-but extract showed a significant inhibitory effect only against E.coli.

Coffee is among the most traded commodities and consumed beverages worldwide primarily for its stimulating effects. Moreover, coffee is known to contain various bioactive compounds with significant health benefits including antibacterial and antioxidant activities. However, Ethiopia as the origin of coffee and producer and exporter of varieties of Coffea arabica has made little study on the health aspects of this beverage. The aim of this study was to examine the antibacterial and antioxidant activities and content of coffee samples from different localities of Yorgacheffe and Jimma; and roasted, ground, and packed samples purchased from a coffee shop in Addis Ababa. Medium-roasted-boiled and lyophilized coffee extracts were tested on eight gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial strains. The agar-well diffusion method was used to test the extracts determining the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations. For coffee antioxidant activity and content, light-roasted (both field and shop samples) and green coffee bean extracts were tested using the free radical 2.2-diphenyl-l-pict1hydrazyl (DPPH) IC50 percent inhibition protocol. The samples showed strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity and substantial antioxidant content. Significant variation was noted in the antibacterial activities of the different coffee samples. Moreover, the growth-inhibitory strength of each coffee sample was variable for different test bacteria. A coffee sample with the best antibacterial activity had also the highest antioxidant activity/content. The shop coffee had the lowest bioactivity. The observed variations in the antibacterial and antioxidant activities among the samples probably indicate the diversity of the Ethiopian coffee related, among other factors, to the coffee plant genetics and agroecology.

The antibacterial activity of three Cupressaceae plants (Thujaoccidentalis,ThujaorientalisandChamaecyparisobtusa) was tested against three bacteria using the agar diffusion method. The ether and ethylacetate fraction of crude methanol extract from the three plants showed potent antibacterial activity against the tested microorganisms. The result showed that Staphylococcus aureus revealed the most sensitivity among the tested bacteria. Thujaoccidentalisether fraction and Thujaorientalis hexane fraction exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. E. coli was shown the highest MIC values compared to the other two tested bacteria, which indicates the lowest antibacterial activity against the bacterium. This study promises an interesting future for designing a potentially active antibacterial agent from the three Cupressaceae plants.

The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the aqueous and hydroethanolic extracts for aerial parts of Herniaria hirsuta. Extracts were screened for their possible antioxidant activities by three tests: DPPH free radical-scavenging, reducing power, and molybdenum systems. The screening of antibacterial activity of extracts was individually evaluated against sixteen bacteria species using a disc diffusion method. Flavonoids, total phenols, and tannins content were performed for both extracts. It shows higher content in the hydroethanolic extract. The hydroethanolic extract showed a significant antioxidant activity for the three methods studies to the aqueous extract, but nonsignificant results compared to the reference (BHT). However, both extracts have negative effect on the strains studies for the antibacterial activity.
