Mangrove forest ecosystems have a very important role for humans and the environment, so to prevent further damage needs to be done identification of tree species composition and structure of mangrove forest stands. For the purpose of this research is to know the composition of tree species from the level of seedling to the tree and to know the structure of its stand. Data collection methods used are Inventory of mangrove species using Indonesian mangrove determination keychain and data analysis by calculating important value index, Diversity index, relative frequency and horizontal structure analysis. The results showed that the largest tree density structure was Rhizophora mucronata of 225 trees / hectare, Avicennia marinna of 145 trees / hectare, Sonneratia alba of 65 trees / hectare and Avicennia officinalis of 65 trees / hectare and had only one crown layer namely strata A which is dominated by Rhizophora mucronata tree which has an average free height of 9 m branch with total height 12 m and diameter 29 cm. For this reason, planting efforts need to be increased to increase the number and composition for coastal protection.

Abstract Regeneration is an important component of community succession and understanding regeneration dynamics is essential for forest protection and recovery management. Mangroves are distributed along coastlines and this unique habitat has resulted in very different regeneration process. This study took Dongzhaigang mangrove forest in Hainan, China as the study area, considered the 10 years regeneration process in 8 abandoned aquaculture ponds, and the spatial factors that influence the regeneration process are analyzed. The objectives were to: a) investigate the natural dynamics of the mangrove regeneration process in abandoned ponds, b) determine the main spatial factors affecting the natural regeneration process. The results showed that the number of species and individuals showed a tendency to initially rise and then decline, with the maximum occurring at 6–8 years. The results of a diversity index showed an initial rise, with stabilization then occurring over a 8 year period. Aegiceras corniculatum and Sonneratia apetala were typical pioneer mangrove species in the study area, while Bruguiera sexangula and Kandelia obovata were representative species of late regeneration period. Spatial factors, including pond area and shape, relative elevation, distance to a tidal creek and surrounding trees area played important roles in the regeneration of mangrove in ponds. Finally, the study considered the current situation regarding mangrove restoration in China and suggested that natural regeneration of mangroves is a good management option.

This objective of this study was to characterize the floristic, structural, and ecological groups and to estimate the arboreal volume and biomass of a cerradão site in Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil. A forest inventory was conducted on 10.15 ha of the study area. Plots of 400-m2 were used for systematic sampling. All standing trees (dead or alive) with a breast-height diameter (DHB) greater than 5 cm were identified and measured. Floristic diversity and horizontal structure were assessed using the Shannon and importance value indices, respectively. Forest vertical structure was classified into three stratata and the tree species were categorized into ecological groups. Ninety tree volumes were rigorously cubed and weighed. Fresh- and dry biomass were sampled and estimated. Mathematical models were applied and adjusted to estimate tree volume and biomass. It was observed that the species Myrcia splendens and Emmotum nitens and the families Fabaceae and Chrysobalanaceae were dominant in our study site. The pioneer (613 individuals ha-1) and climax (530 individuals ha-1) tree species group predominated. The floristic diversity index was estimated as 3.35 nats ind- 1. The vertical structure analysis indicated fewer individuals in the superior stratum (13%) compared to the medium (63%) and inferior (24%) stratum. The Schumacher and Hall model showed better results with regard to estimated forest production. Forest volume and biomass estimates were 126.71 m³ ha-1 and 61.67 Mg ha-1, respectively. The studied cerradão area had high floristic diversity and climax species predominated. Since this cerradão is in close proximity to the Amazon biome, its volume and biomass stocks were higher than those estimated for other cerradão and forest formations within the Cerrado biome.

Diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1215-1221. The purpose of the study was to analyze the flora diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra. Data collected were the number and girth diameter of mangrove tree species, and aquatic ecology parameters using transect method. The sample plots size were 2m×2 m; 5m×5 m; 10m×10 m; for seedling, sapling, and tree, respectively. The observation plots were arranged in a row of 120 m length on two sides of the forest edge, namely Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank. Data were analyzed using importance value index (IVI), Simpson’s diversity index and Sørensen’s community similarity. The study revealed that there were differences in mangrove characteristics in two study sites. There were 57 plant species identified inside and outside sample plots, but only 15 species (26.32%) among them were categorized as true mangrove species. Inside the sample plots, there were 11 and 10 mangrove tree species recorded on the Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank, respectively, but only 7 species among them were found in both sites. The mangroves on Calik Riverbank were dominated by Nypa (IVI 53.59%) and Bruguiera (51.12%), while those on Banyuasin Riverbank were dominated by Sonneratia (66.91%) and Avicennia (51.73%). The Simpson’s diversity index for Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank was 0.82 and 0.78, respectively, whereas the Sørensen’s coefficient of community between the two sites was 0.67.

This research aims to know the diversity of mangrove in Gedangan Village, Purwodadi Subdistrict, Purworejo Regency, Central Java. This research conducted on June-September 2016 with purposive sampling methods with three station. Based on the results of the research are nine mangrove species found are rhizophora mucronata, sonneratia alba, nypa fruticans, hibiscus tiliaceus, ipomoea pescaprae, acanthus ilicifolius, gymnanthera paludosa, wedelia biflora, and scirpus sp. Diversity of tree mangrove are low (H’ station 2=0,95 and H’ station 3= 0,15). Diversity of sapling mangrove are low with H’ in station 1, 2, and 3 are 0,2; 0,68; dan 0,08. And the diversity of mangrove seedling and lower plants are medium with H’ in station 1, 2, and 3 are 1,17; 1,56; and 1,48. Environment condition in all station is relatively good to support the life of mangrove plant. That is temperature  28-30 0C; pH 7-8; DO 4,0-6,5 mg/l; salinity 6-9 ppt; and sandy mud substrate.

Angke Kapuk Mangrove Protected Forest (AKMPF) is one of the protected forests in the coastal area of DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. This area is important for the north coast of Jakarta, hence it has function to protect the land from sea abrasion, seawater intrusion, and seawater flooding. This study aims to determine the condition of forest structures and species composition in the Angke Kapuk Mangrove Protected Forest (AKMPF) to obtain useful information for sustainable mangrove forest management. Vegetation data were collected using the sampling unit of transect for tree and line plot for forest regeneration inventories. Those data were analyzed for the density, frequency, dominance, species diversity, and species distribution pattern. The obtained results show that AKMPF consists of 13 mangrove species, including 7 species of true mangrove, 5 species associated mangrove, and 1 species of palm, with the dominant species, are Avicennia marina for tree with its regenerations and Acrostichum aureum for groundcover. Overall, the species diversity index in this area was classified as low category. Mangrove trees in this area have height class between 4-28 meters formed bell-curve, while stem diameter class were between 10.00-69.75 cm formed L-curve. The distribution pattern of species in this areal generally was clumped.

This study aims to determine the diversity and density of mangrove vegetation in Kase Village, Leksula Subdistrict, South Buru Regency. The study uses the line transect method with several observation plots that are stratified. A total of 20 transects were placed at the study site with the size of each plot, namely for seedling level, which is 2 x 2 m, while for the level of a sapling, namely 5 x 5 m and for the level of trees, which is 10 x 10 m. The results showed that in the mangrove area in Kase Village, Leksula Subdistrict, South Buru Regency, 3 mangrove species were found, namely Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, and Sonneratia alba, which belong to two families (Rhizophoraceae, Sonneratiaceae) and 3 genera, (Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Sonneratia). The total number of mangrove individuals, that is 699 individuals from 419 levels of seedlings, 116 levels of a sapling, and 164 levels of trees. The species with the highest density and relative density values at the level of tree growth, namely Rhizophora apiculata, and at the level of sapling and seedlings, namely Bruguiera gymnorhiza. While Sonneratia alba, tends to have density values and species densities that tend to be low at all three growth rates. Furthermore, the results of the diversity index analysis in the mangrove area of Kase Village, Leksula Subdistrict, South Buru Regency, showed that the diversity of species (H´) mangroves for each growth level was 0.76 (seedlings); 0.82 (sapling); and 1.02 (trees), or classified as low to moderate category. Keywords: Mangrove, Diversity, Abundance, Kase Village  Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman dan kerapatan jenis vegetasi mangrove di Desa Kase, Kecamatan Leksula Kabupaten Buru Selatan. Sebanyak 20 transek ditempatkan pada lokasi penelitian dengan ukuran plot masing-masing, yakni untuk tingkat semai, yakni 2 x 2 m, sedangkan untuk tingkat anakan, yakni 5 x 5 m dan untuk tingkat pohon, yakni 10 x 10 m. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada area mangrove di Desa Kase Kecamatan Leksula Kabupaten Buru Selatan, ditemukan 3 spesies mangrove yakni Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, dan Sonneratia alba, yang tergolong ke dalam dua family (Rhizophoraceae, Sonneratiaceae) dan 3 genus, (Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Sonneratia). Jumlah total individu mangrove, yakni 699 individu yang terdiri dari 419 tingkat semai, 116 tingkat anakan, dan 164 tingkat pohon. Spesies dengan nilai kerapatan dan kerapatan relatif tertinggi pada tingkat pertumbuhan pohon, yakni Rhizophora apiculata, dan pada tingkat anakan serta semai, yakni Bruguiera gymnorhiza. Sedangkan Sonneratia alba, cenderung memiliki nilai kerapatan dan kerapatan jenis yang cenderung rendah pada ketiga tingkat pertumbuhan tersebut. Kemudian, hasil analisis indeks keanekaragaman di area mangrove Desa Kase Kecamatan Leksula Kabupaten Buru Selatan, menunjukan bahwa keanekaragaman jenis (H´) mangrove untuk masing-masing tingkat pertumbuhan, yakni 0.76 (semai); 0.82 (anakan); dan 1.02 (pohon), atau tergolong kategori rendah hingga sedang.                                                      Kata Kunci: Mangrove, Keanekaragaman, Kerapatan, Desa Kase

Mangrove forest is a vegetation that grows in the estuary beaches and who has the function of ecological, biological, economic and social culture, but now its existence has been degraded by the use of a less appropriate or changing function. Research on the structure of mangrove forest vegetation in the Wasti Bay Sowi IV Manokwari District of Southern District Manokwari conducted in April 2018 with the aim to determine the structure of mangrove forest vegetation and utilization. The method used in this research is the approach of ecological (biological) and anthropological approach. From the analysis of vegetation, found as many as 8 species of mangrove plants. Rhizophora apiculata is the dominant species on the level of a tree with a Density Value of 784.66 Individuals/Ha with an Important Value Index (IVI) 50.06 followed Rhizophora mucronata with a Density Value of 770.34 Individuals/Ha with the Important Value Index (IVI) 41.01. At the level of belta Rhizophora mucronata is the dominant species with a Density Value of 385.66 Individuals/Ha with the Important Value Index (IVI) 45.13 then Rhizophora apiculata with a Density Value of 263.33 Individuals/Ha with the Important Value Index (IVI) 40.22. At the seedling stage Rhizophora mucronata a dominant species with a Density Value of 760.00 Individuals/Ha with the Important Value Index (IVI) 45.42 and Rhizophora apiculata had Density Value of 681.66 Individuals/Ha with the Important Value Index (IVI) 41.04. Based on interviews of 8 mangrove species found in the observation plot, 3 species used as building material, 6 species as a source of firewood, 3 species as drugs and 5 species for other purposes.

Kendari Bay is directly adjacent to the Kendari City area, so that it receives a lot of pressure mainly from community activities. This pressure causes the declining of mangrove forest area every year. Reproductive phenology of mangroves can be used in planning, collecting seeds, and seeding propagules for rehabilitation of degraded mangrove forest area. The aims of this research were to know the morphological characteristics of mangrove reprodutive organs and mangrove reproductive phenology of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Ceriops tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, and Rhizophora mucronata in Kendari Bay. The method using in this research was observation method that conducted directly in the field. Morphology and phenology of mangrove reproduction divided into 6 phases, i.e. flower bud, blooming flower, ovary, fruit, young propagule and mature propagule. The data was analysed descriptively. According to the result, the morphological characteristics of 4 mangrove species were different. Flower of B. gymnorrhiza was single, whereas flowers of C. tagal, R. apiculata and R. mucronata were inflorescences. Ovary of B. gymnorrhiza was hemi inferous, whereas ovaries of C. tagal, R. apiculata and R. mucronata were superous. R. mucronata had the largest propagule compared to other mangroves observed. The timing of mangrove reproductive phenology also showed different result. B. gymnorrhiza required 299 days to develop from flower bud to mature propagule and R. apiculata required 262 days, whereas C. tagal and R. mucronata  had not been able known its phenological period because the timing data from ovary to fruit had not been obtained. Further research is needed to resolve this issue.
