The Minangkabau Karawitan of Aluang Bunian in Pamenan Anak Nagari from the Performance of the Aesthetic Presentation Bagurau. Traditional arts in Minangkabau in general are called pamenan anak nagari. The phrase implies the fact that it originated in Minangkabau or Minang folk culture, grew as one of traditional aspects of Minangkabau folk group, and performed by and for the group. Karawitan or traditional musical arts in Minangkabau is called aluang bunian that means musical sounds. An aluang bunian which is presented as an entertainment for Minang people is called bagurau. Bagurau is performed as a cultural event that goes on from dusk (after the evening prayer) till dawn (before the fajr prayer). It is a kind of performing arts—among many other kinds of arts in Minang oral tradition—that exemplifies Minangkabau tradition. Throughout periods of development in science and technology, aluang bunian (Minang karawitan) has underwent an enhancement in its aesthetic values in that it is no longer considered a mere entertainment of pamenan anak nagari but a richer aesthetic presentation with its guiding principles. This article presents cultural, semiotic, and aesthetic studies in which the three contributory aspects (culture, semiotics, and aesthetics) are inseparable since cultural studies involve comprehensions of significations and aesthetic values derived from meaning and sensibility. The abilities in interpreting, inferring, understanding, and analyzing play important role in qualitative research where descriptive analysis method is employed.

One of the ways of categorization of reality through the vegetal code of culture is considered through the example of folklore of Mordva-Erzya and Moksha. The sacred nature of this code and the mechanism of its correlation with the worldview of man is of particular interest. The research reveals their close connection with the aesthetic associations developed by folk culture for many centuries and strengthened in the minds of Erzya and Moksha, and in general, the Finno-Ugric peoples as standards of beauty. The described fragment of the linguistic picture of the world is a complex system of images, which reflect the archaic structures of consciousness, the oldest archetypal and mythological representations. An extensive paradigm of images included in this ethnic culture is considered in the context of the system of traditional images of other peoples of the Volga region, inter-ethnic parallels are drawn. The reconstruction based on the materials of Mordovian folklore through the prism of the vegetal code of culture helps to recreate the features of perception and understanding of the phenomena of reality, to detect natural inter-ethnic similarities and differences.

Although most title sequences of Ken Russell's films consist of superimpositions of a static text on film images, the elaborate title sequence to Altered States (1981) was specially designed by Richard Greenberg, who had already acquired a reputation for his innovative typography thanks to his work on Superman (1978) and Alien (1979). Greenberg continued these typographic experiments in Altered States. Although both the film and its title sequence were not personal projects for Russell, a close analysis of the title sequence reveals that it functions as a small narrative unit in its own right, facilitating the transition of the spectator from the outside world of the cinema to the inside world of filmic fiction and functioning as a prospective mise-en-abyme and matrix of all the subsequent narrative representations and sequences of the film to come. By focusing on this aspect of the film, the article indicates how the title sequence to Altered States is tightly interwoven with the aesthetic and thematic structure of the film, even though Russell himself may have had less control over its design than other parts of the film.

The natural beauty of coral reefs attracts millions of tourists worldwide resulting in substantial revenues for the adjoining economies. Although their visual appearance is a pivotal factor attracting humans to coral reefs current monitoring protocols exclusively target biogeochemical parameters, neglecting changes in their aesthetic appearance. Here we introduce a standardized computational approach to assess coral reef environments based on 109 visual features designed to evaluate the aesthetic appearance of art. The main feature groups include color intensity and diversity of the image, relative size, color, and distribution of discernable objects within the image, and texture. Specific coral reef aesthetic values combining all 109 features were calibrated against an established biogeochemical assessment (NCEAS) using machine learning algorithms. These values were generated for ∼2,100 random photographic images collected from 9 coral reef locations exposed to varying levels of anthropogenic influence across 2 ocean systems. Aesthetic values proved accurate predictors of the NCEAS scores (root mean square error < 5 forN≥ 3) and significantly correlated to microbial abundance at each site. This shows that mathematical approaches designed to assess the aesthetic appearance of photographic images can be used as an inexpensive monitoring tool for coral reef ecosystems. It further suggests that human perception of aesthetics is not purely subjective but influenced by inherent reactions towards measurable visual cues. By quantifying aesthetic features of coral reef systems this method provides a cost efficient monitoring tool that targets one of the most important socioeconomic values of coral reefs directly tied to revenue for its local population.

Under the background of the vigorous development of various cultural and artistic forms, the traditional patterns that can express the unique charm of Chinese national culture have become an important material for modern design. Traditional patterns not only have unique decorative functions, but also represent the spirit of traditional culture. Among them, flower and bird patterns are also precipitated by history. It is worth exploring how to combine the flower and bird patterns with the aesthetics of the times, and how to integrate the traditional flower and bird patterns with the nature of the times. Starting with the formation and development of flower and bird patterns, this paper analyzes the historical, cultural and aesthetic attributes of flower and bird patterns from the perspective of design culture, and expounds the application of flower and bird patterns in makeup and hair in various historical dynasties. With the development of the times, the application of flower and bird patterns in modern makeup and hair should be both national and in line with the aesthetic requirements of modern people.

This paper shows the importance of applying a certain approach to the history and philosophy of mathematical practice to the study of Zygmunt Janiszewski's contribution to the topological foundations of Continuum theory. In the first part, a biography of Janiszewski is presented. It emphasizes his role as one of the founders of the Polish School of Mathematics, and the social, political and military facets in which his intellectual character was revealed, as well as the values that guided his academic and scientific life. Kitcher's view of mathematical practice is then adopted to examine the philosophical conceptions and epistemological style of Janiszewski in relation to the construction of the formal axiomatic system of knowledge about the continua. Finally, it is shown the convenience of differentiating in Kitcher's approach, the methods, procedures, techniques and strategies of practice, and the aesthetic values of mathematics. Keywords: Zygmunt Janiszewski; Continuum theory; Philosophy of mathematical practice; Polish school of mathematics.

In the area of social research, it is not uncommon to come across qualitative interviews (transcribed or recorded) that present conduction strategies which seem to be in contrast to that is recommended by the literature on this subject. In order to understand the reason why this occurs, I present the results of a research carried out among Italian sociologists who use qualitative interviews for their research; I try to establish a connection between the conduction strategies used by researchers and their training. I found three different conducting styles, and divided my interviewees into three categories. But, only one of these categories presents a real positive attitude towards qualitative interviews. The problem is that all these researchers also teach qualitative methods at University or train new interviewers for their research and they pass down their same attitude to their students, for better or worse.
