PurposeCareer Development International (CDI) is an established source of scientific research on careers and development. The journal reached its 25-years milestone in 2021. To commemorate the occasion, the article aims to provide a retrospective of the major trends, research constituents, thematic structure and key factors explaining the citation impact of CDI articles between 1996 and 2020.Design/methodology/approachThe article extracts bibliographic data of CDI from Scopus and uses that data in (1) a series of bibliometric analyses to explain the major trends, research constituents and thematic structure and (2) a negative binomial regression analysis to explain the key factors affecting the citation impact of CDI.FindingsThe article finds that CDI has progressed and contributed substantially to the scientific community since its inception 25 years ago. The contributions in CDI are mainly from America and Europe and can be organized around five major clusters, namely career development, work engagement, entrepreneurship career, career outcomes and career mentoring.Research limitations/implicationsThe article provides a rich overview of CDI, but the findings are limited to the accuracy and availability of bibliographic data of CDI from Scopus.Originality/valueThe article extends Akkermans and Kubasch's (2017) 5-years retrospection of major journals on career and development through a 25-years retrospection of CDI, and in doing so, the article provides a longer and more accurate representation of CDI's contributions to the extant literature on career and development.

PurposeThe objective of the article is to determine the numerical increase in publications on green libraries and the dynamics of its development as well as to determine the thematic structure of the scientific literature in the field of green libraries and its changes as a representation of research in this area.Design/methodology/approachThe research material consisted of publications on green libraries published between 1991 and 2020, indexed in the Web of Science database. The bibliometric method was used to determine the numerical increase in publications on green libraries and the dynamics of its development. In order to characterize the thematic structure of publications representing research in this area, content analysis was performed.FindingsQuantitative analysis of the literature on green libraries has shown that this is a new area of research not explored with constant intensity. The time of publishing materials on green libraries can be divided into two periods: the so-called period of first publications between 1991 and 2006, and the period between 2007 and 2020, when the number of publications increased relatively systematically. The content analysis confirmed the hypothesis that the most frequent theme is the issue of a green building and its management. It showed that the period after 2010 is the time of building a theoretical framework for a new research field, i.e. green libraries.Originality/valueThe main value of the article is the performance of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the scientific literature indexed in the Web of Science devoted to green libraries, from the moment of the first publications to the present day. The codebook developed for the needs of content analysis can constitute the basis for the development of criteria for the evaluation of green libraries and guidelines for their organization.

The purpose of the article is to characterize Zlata Tkach’s Piano Concerto as the culminating composition in the genre of the composer’s symphonic music. The research methodology is based on the method of complex musicological analysis, due to which, the role of this work in the system of memorial genres of the author is determined, typical style features of her work late period are revealed, the thematic structure of the Concerto is characterized from the position of the manifestation of the principle of dialogicity and monothematism. The scientific novelty of the research is that for the first time, intonation processes in a Piano Concerto by Z. Tkach are systematically analyzed and the correlation of its traditional and innovative features is characterized. Being by genre attribution an opus with a pronounced desire to use modern means of expression, the concert is distinguished by the manifestation of the principle of microthematism and textural thematism. In the dramaturgical solution, the author conducts a constructive search in dynamic, timbre and rhythmic comparisons. At the same time, the intonational unity between the sections of the form, being the development of the romantic principle of poetry, is expressed in the form of monothematism. Conclusions. The creative method of Z. Tkach manifests itself in the synthesis of tradition and experiment. This is confirmed by the intonation-thematic structure of the Piano Concerto, in which the convergence of contrasting material contributes to the formation of an integral musical and dramatic concept. The motifs that form the basis of the monothematism complex establish intonation arches between the sections of a one-part composition, fastening them and subordinating them to a common plan. Important importance belongs to the opposition of the roles of the participants in the performance. Their dialogical activity is manifested in a peculiar way by the composer, primarily in the dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra: the interweaving of two contrasting figurative spheres is realized primarily in terms of content. The principle of monothematism is manifested especially vividly in the characterization of tragic reflections, painful reflections on the eternal conflict of the creative personality with the surrounding world, leading to a deep understanding of what exists. The other embodies the dynamism of life, dominating in the culmination of ‘action’, the accumulation of energy. Both the piano and the orchestra are equally involved in the development of both figurative principles. The resulting translational, purposeful movement towards the finale determines, along with the principle of monothematism, the integrity of the entire composition.

Abstract In this study we argue that the appropriateness of an answer to a why-question, potentially bearing on multiple contrast classes, is mainly influenced by the focalized argument, which identifies the relevant reference set. The focalization structure, however, interacts in a non-trivial way with the thematic structure and its accessibility, suggesting a general (independent) prominence of the direct object (DO) over the indirect one (IO). In correlation to that, we also observed that DO appears more resistant to extraction compared to IO, while it seems felicitous in a post-IO focalized low position (light NP-shifting). These contrasts are obtained by running five distinct experiments in Italian targeting various dislocation configurations: Four forced choice tasks manipulating leftward dislocation (i) clefting versus (ii) fronting versus (iii) clitic left dislocation and (iv) postverbal reordering (canonical DO IO order vs. IO DO) in ditransitive predicates. Then (v) an acceptability judgment study was administered to assess the difficulty in figuring out a licensing context coherent with the argument ordering, provided in the why-question. To minimize the interacting factors, all sentences included null subjects and a context was provided for each experimental item in the forced choice tasks, introducing the relevant contrast classes.

This study offers an overview of the thematic structure in Communication during the first two decades of the 20th century, 2001-2010 and 2011-2020. The included work mapped author keywords and keywords plus of citable articles published in the Journal Citation Reports-2019 edition. A longitudinal perspective was employed to visualize the thematic evolution. Four predominant thematic areas were evidenced in both periods: (1) Speech and Language, (2) Commercial Communication, (3) Health Communication, and (4) Organizational Communication. There were four topics reflecting the formation of substantial research areas during the second decade, such as (1) Science Communication, (2) Scholarly Publishing, (3) Mental Health and Interpersonal Relationships, and (4) Crime and Violence. In general, from the first to the second decade, the technological dimension ceased to be predominant, and instead, there was a more significant presence of themes that responded to a socio-psychological dimension.

This study investigates the realisation of textual meaning through theme-rheme structures of four dream-themed poems by Poe. This study has analysed these poems by studying the themes and rhemes in a unitary clause and identifying the role different kinds of themes play in establishing textual metafunctions of the language. The results illustrated the poems exhibited simple, multiple, topical, interpersonal, and textual, along with marked and unmarked themes. Unmarked topical themes contributed to a clear, easy-to-understand experience and dominated three of the four poems. Where the poet desired to create cohesion and flow of language, multiple themes were prevalent, and with a higher percentage of textual themes. Furthermore, the deviations in thematic structure of the poems also indicated the development of Poe’s poetic style and intent. The thematic analysis of the poems showed how the thematic structure contributes to creating meaning and unification of ideas in the text through cohesion, coherence, and emphasis. In terms of teaching pedagogy, the use of theme-rheme structure as an analytical tool for poetry will lead students and teachers to a more profound understanding of the poet's intent and attitude, and the shared beliefs being evoked in poetic texts.

This article investigates the ‘problematisation’ of the recently inaugurated mosque in the city of Athens, the capital’s first ‘official’ mosque since the country was liberated from the Ottoman Empire almost two centuries ago. Building on and developing the existing scholarly literature on the problematisation of mosques in the contemporary European setting, this article generates new knowledge by focusing on the Greco-specific context of that same problematisation: an amalgam of history, geography, religion and culture, that asymmetrically shape and inform how and why the new Athens mosque is—and indeed continues to be—a site of conflict and opposition. Presenting new empirical data, this article uses an innovative and original approach to bring together two separate pieces of fieldwork undertaken first-hand by the authors in 2001/2 and 2019/20. Analysing the two sets of data, a threefold thematic structure is employed that focuses on Greece’s history, Christian Orthodoxy and global terrorism. This article first explores the existing scholarly canon relating to the contemporary problematisation of mosques through a focused overview of Greece’s history, religion and culture appropriate to mosques and in part, Muslims and Islam. From there it sets out the findings from the two periods of fieldwork to illustrate and evidence discourses of opposition towards the mosque and how these serve to function both symbolically and tangibly. Using the thematic analysis, theories relating to the ideological processes of Islamophobia are deployed to elucidate a better understanding of the Athens mosque. In doing so, this article makes a timely contribution.

Attracting and retaining students in a COVID-distanced online higher education market is more important than ever. With limited access to campus, extensive student choice, and precarious institutional revenue, understanding what makes a positive online student experience in the eyes of students themselves, is vital for institutional survival. Through an in-depth case study of online first-year university students, this research identified six themes that describe students’ lived experiences of online education (OE), summarised as a motivation, ability, circumstances – interaction, curriculum, environment, or MAC-ICE, thematic structure of the online student experience (OSE). Where online students are deeply motivated, possess the skills to participate effectively in online university education, and are situated in conducive circumstances, they may be well placed for a positive student experience. Supplementing this, universities may facilitate a quality OSE through meaningful interaction with instructors, peers, and course content; flexible, challenging, and relevant curricula; and a reliable, innovative learning environment commensurate with the on-campus student experience. The rich description provided by this research enables generation of propositions about students’ experiences of OE, and suggests opportunities to enhance the OSE through consideration of identified themes.   Implications for practice or policy: The OSE can be described by students’ motivation, ability, and circumstances, alongside institutional interaction, curriculum, and environment. OE may be perceived to involve more work, greater concentration, better time management, more self-regulation, and a heavier reliance on technology, than on-campus education. OE research may be confounded, where particular MAC-ICE themes are insufficiently considered. Online student outcomes may be increased through purposeful consideration of all MAC-ICE themes.
