Repeated exposure to pesticides can cause a variety of human health problems, particularly among farmers. This work consisted in studying biochemical parameters and their evolution in cotton farmers exposed to pesticides. A longitudinal study was conducted during and after the 2018/2019 cotton season on a cohort of cotton farmers around the Bala hippopotamus pond in the department of Satiri. Biochemical parameters were measured during and after the crop year on the Architect ci 4100. The majority of the farmers had high uric acid (UA) and low blood sugar (Gluc) concentrations. A few had concentrations of Cholinesterase (ChE) (6.19%); Direct Bilirubin (BilD) (23.01%); Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) (8.85%); Alkaline Phosphatase (ALkP) (4.42%); Cholesterol (Chol) (4.42%); triglycerides (Trig) (4.42%); aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (4.42%) higher than normal and lower than normal albumin (Alb) (13.27%) and total protein (TP) (13.27%) concentrations. Analysis of the evolution of biochemical parameters showed that none of the producers had higher than normal ChE and TP concentrations. After the campaign, the number of producers with lower than normal values increased for AST, AlkP, Alb and Urea while those with higher than normal values increased for GGT, UA, Gluc, Chol, Trig and BilD. Also, a significant decrease in AST, ALT and creatinine (CreaC) concentrations and a significant increase in GGT and BilD concentrations were observed. The existence of some disturbances of biochemical parameters in farmers should encourage to test the hypothesis of a link between pesticide exposure and the appearance of biochemical disorders in clinical trials.

Reference interval (RIs) were critical to the identification of illness. However, RIs set in one laboratory may not be appropriate for another because of biological, geographical and instrumental factors. Interpretation of clinical data using inappropriate RIs may cause misclassification of results and misdiagnosis that lead to improper treatment. RIs in Taiwan have been mostly referencing from foreign resources, it is desirable to establish one that is closer to the overall conditions in Taiwan (such as breed, climate, diseases, etc.) and to investigate its differences to foreign RIs. The present study used the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) guidelines to establish in-house RIs for hematological, biochemical and coagulation parameters using dogs in middle Taiwan. The results were also compared to two foreign and one local RIs. The results suggested that the hematological RIs are more comparable to foreign RIs than the biochemical and hemostatic parameters. Differences were found for biochemical parameters including gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lipase, uric acid, bile acid, bilirubin and magnesium; and coagulation parameters including prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin. In all, 18% (7/40) of the all tested parameters were different from the local RI while 38% (18/48) and 41% (19/46) of the parameters were different from the two foreign RIs. The differences in more than 30% RIs and better similarities to local RIs underscore the importance of having own RIs if possible.

Abstract Continuous monitoring of heat denaturation of a mixture of alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes at 60 degrees C and pH 7.5 permits the simultaneous direct identification and quantitation of three isoenzymes: the placental isoenzyme, the L-phenylalanine-sensitive intestinal isoenzyme, and the liver isoenzyme (hepatocytic). The isoenzyme that is principally of bone origin cannot be identified as such without the help of other diagnostic aids and the patient's medical history. All human tissues contain alkaline phosphatase, many organs more than one of the isoenzymes. Liver alkaline phosphatase, which constitutes 40-50% of normal serum alkaline phosphatase activity, was measured in the serum of persons with various liver diseases. Its activity exceeded normal in all types of liver disease; in 80% of cases this increase was accompanied by increased gamma-glutamyl-transferase activity, but the quantitative correlationship (r = 0.54) was not as good as expected if both enzymes come from the same source and are indices of liver dieases. Liver alkaline phosphatase activity increases in the blood early in liver disease, before most liver tests show abnormalities. The other major isoenzyme of normal serum probably represents a mixture of isoenzymes from bone and reticulo-endothelial and vascular tissues, which all contain the same "very heat-labile" alkaline phosphatase. Cord blood and children's sera contain mostly this very heat-labile isoenzyme.

BACKGROUND: The choledocolithiasis has an incidence of 8-20% in patients with cholecystolithiasis. The preoperative diagnosis guides the interventional treatment on the bile duct AIM: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the laboratory markers and imaging studies for choledocholithiasis preoperatively. METHODS: The study comprised 254 patients divided into two groups: the control group (207 patients), patients without choledocholithiasis intraoperatively and cases group (47 patients), that enrolled the patients with choledocholithiasis intra-operatively. Were evaluated the laboratory markers, image exams and intra-operative diagnostic aspects. RESULTS: The sample was homogeneous for age and gender. It was observed that 47% of the cases the patients did not show comorbidities. Hospitalization showes in cases group acute pancreatitis in12.8%, jaundice in 30%, fever in 30% and pain in the right hypochondrium in 95%. By comparing them, was observed that fever and jaundice were the signs and symptoms with statistical significance. Patients with choledocholithiasis had transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase and higher bilirubin with statistical significance (p<0.001). In regard to imaging studies, ultrasound was fairly accurate for cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Changes in canalicular and transaminase enzymes are suggestive for preoperative choledocholithiasis; GGT showed better sensitivity and alkaline phosphatase greater specificity; ultrasonography and nuclear magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed high specificity.

BACKGROUND Alcoholism remains to be the major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Consuming alcohol is the potent etiological factor for the development of alcoholic liver diseases (ALD), ranging from fatty liver to hepatocellular carcinoma with varying rates of development in both genders depending on the quality, quantity, and duration of the drink. Zinc deficiency has been documented with the progression of alcoholic liver disease. It is also a well-known fact that zinc is a co-factor for enzyme alkaline phosphatase. This study aims to assess the zinc status and alkaline phosphatase activity in patients with various stages of alcoholic liver disease, correlate zinc with alkaline phosphatase activity, albumin, gamma glutamyl transferase activity, MELD score and duration of alcohol intake and analysing the need for evaluating zinc in these patients. METHODS This comparative observational study involves group I healthy controls and group II patients diagnosed to have ethanol related decompensated liver disease with or without portal hypertension for more than three years from the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Government Medical College Hospital. 5 ml of venous blood in fasting state was collected from both groups and assayed for serum zinc, and serum alkaline phosphatase activity. The data was statistically analysed. RESULTS The study results demonstrate that higher percentage of patients with alcoholic liver disease have low serum zinc levels than healthy controls. Zinc when compared with variables like serum albumin, duration of alcohol intake, MELD score, serum gamma glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase in the case and control groups were found to be statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS There is decrease in serum zinc level and increased alkaline phosphatase activity in patients with alcoholic liver disease. The statistically significant data is a strong rationale for evaluating the zinc status and thereby supplementing zinc to patients with alcoholic liver disease. In the conditions of industrial poultry farming, the body of hens is constantly exposed to numerous technological stressors, the least studied of which are long-term ones, that can provoke chronic stress. One such technological stressor is an increase in the level of cage equipment, which is used by producers to obtain a larger amount of products from 1 m2 of poultry area. The aim of this work was to study the physiological state of the hen’s body based on the clinical biochemical analysis of their blood serum, depending on the battery cages height. In the conditions of a modern complex for the production of edible eggs in a poultry house with an area of 2 915 m2, 4 groups of hens were formed, each of them was kept on a separate floor-analogue in terms of area and cage equipment. Each floor was equipped with «Big Dutchman» 3-tier battery cages. Battery cages of each floor were separated from each other by a lattice floor so that cages of 1–3 tiers entered up to the 1st floor, 4–6 tiers – up to the 2nd, 7–9 tiers – up to the 3rd, and 10–12 tiers – up to 4th floor of cage equipment. Biochemical parameters and activity of hens blood serum enzymes were determined on a BioChem FC-360 biochemical analyzer. For this, 30 blood samples with a volume of 1.0–1.5 ml were taken from axillary veins of laying hens in each group at the age of 18 weeks (at the beginning of the study) and at 52 weeks. It was found that increasing the layering of cage equipment does not have a negative impact on the hen’s body. So, for keeping hens in cages of multi-tier battery cages located on floors 2–4 (4–12 tiers), the biochemical status and activity of their blood serum enzymes were within the physiological norm. Whereas, for hens kept in battery cages of the a multi-tiered system on the 1st floor there was an increase in glucose levels of 60.5–71.0%, creatinine – by 9.7–12.3%, phosphorus – 82.6–100.0%, was observed a decrease in calcium to phosphorus ratio 46.7–50.0%, which was confirmed by an increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase by 22.3–27.0%, as well as an increase in the activity of aspartate aminotransferase by 3.2–13.8%, lactate dehydrogenase - by 48.5–65.1% and gamma-glutamyl transferase – by 16.4–20.6%. It has been proven that the main consequences of chronic stress caused by keeping hens in the lower floor cells of the multi-tiered battery cage are reflected in the biochemical parameters of their serum, namely increased glucose, creatinine, enzyme activity and violation of calcium to phosphorus ratio.

Abstract During intensive physical activity horses are exposed to thermolysis, electrolyte loss and rising amounts of catabolic products, which results in alterations of biochemical blood parameters due to the horse’s adaptation to metabolic stress. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of intensive physical activity on serum biochemical parameters in horses competing in 40 and 80 km endurance races. Blood samples were taken from 28 horses before and after the race over four competitions, with a total of 53 samples analyzed. Biochemical parameters studied included creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine, gamma-glutamyl transferase, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The extent of change in pre- and post-race values was compared between categories of age, gender, breed, distance and average speed of horses. Creatine kinase and blood glucose values prior to the race were higher than the reference values. Values of renal parameters and parameters of muscle damage increased after the races, and the degree of change was more pronounced at longer racing lengths, as well as at lower average speed. Electrolyte loss was more prominent during longer races. This study demonstrated that endurance races cause evident changes in serum electrolyte concentrations, renal parameters and markers of muscle damage in horses. These changes are observable in horses at both short and long duration endurance races.

Abstract. The purpose of this study was to compare the biochemical profile of blood in the first two months of lactation in first-calf cows with polymorphic variants of the stearoyl-CoA-desaturase gene (SCD1) and its relationship with reproductive parameters. Methods. The work was carried out in one of the breeding factories of the Leningrad Region on first-calf cows of the Holstein breed with an average milk yield of 9073 ± 263 kg for 305 days of lactation. Animal genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP. Serum samples were used to determine the content of total protein, albumin, urea, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, the activity of the enzymes AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), alkaline phosphatase (alkaline phosphatase), GGT (γ-glutamyl transferase). Laboratory studies of blood serum were performed on a RX Daytona biochemical analyzer (Randox Laboratories, UK) using reagents from Cormay, Poland. The results of the study. Of the 20 individuals, 12 animals were carriers of the CT genotype, the remaining first-calf cows had the CC (n = 6) and TT (n = 2) genotypes. Blood biochemical parameters were determined in animals with CT and SS genotypes. On the 44-50th day of lactation in animals with CT genotype, the urea concentration and AST activity decreased by 1.2–1.3 times (p ≤ 0.001). In individuals with the SS genotype, no change in these indicators was found. As a result, at the end of the second month of lactation in cows with the SS genotype, blood urea and AST activity were 1.2 times higher than in animals with the CT genotype. The content of total cholesterol increased 1.3–1.4 times (p < 0.01) by the 6–7th week of lactation in cows of both genotypes (SS and CT). The remaining biochemical parameters did not differ between time intervals within the same genotype, and between groups of animals with different genotypes. When distributing the examined cows into groups depending on the genotype and service period, it was found that the duration of the service period of more than 150 days is twice as common in individuals with the CC genotype. In cows with the heterozygous ST genotype of the SCD1 gene, biochemical profile indicators are more optimal, which may be associated with an increased frequency of occurrence of individuals with a shorter service period.

Introduction: Diagnostic enzymology plays a useful role in evaluation of various hepatobiliary diseases and numerous enzymes have been compared in different disorders. Among these, significance of Gamma Glutamyl Transferase and 5’ Nucleotidase over Alkaline Phosphatase has been stressed repeatedly, but mainly in the icteric obstructive biliary disease patients. In this study, these three enzymes were compared not only in the icteric but also the an-icteric biliary disease patients, particularly to look for elevation and significance of these enzymes in the latter group.Methods: The study was conducted on 50 biliary disease patients, who were further divided into an-icteric (32 patients) and icteric (18 patients) subgroups depending on their bilirubin levels. 50 subjects matched for age and sex with the study group were enrolled for the control group. Gamma Glutamyl Transferase, 5’Nucleotidase, Alkaline Phosphatase and bilirubin levels were evaluated in all the patients as well as the control subjects. Results: All three enzymes showed a significant rise in the icteric subgroup (p value < 0.001). However, in the an-icteric subgroup, only Gamma Glutamyl Transferase and 5’Nucleotidase showed a significant rise. The rise was more for Gamma Glutamyl Transferse (1.60 times normal, p < 0.001) as compared to 5’Nucleotidase (1.39 times normal, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Gamma Glutamyl Transferase and 5’Nucleotidase are useful for evaluation of not only obstructive biliary disease patients but also for the patients with biliary disease who are an-icteric, and out of these two, the former is a more valuable diagnostic indicator in such diseases

Thirty-5 weeks-old pigs were fed corn-soybean diets containing 0.5 ppm and 1.5 ppm. deoxynivalenol. Sera samples were collected from ten piglets in each group at the end of 35 days of the trial to study the effect of certain serum biochemical parameters. Highly significant (P < 0.05) differences were observed for serum urea and gamma glutamyl transferase between control and mycotoxin treated groups. Mycotoxin treated groups did not reveal any significant difference for serum total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate transferase and alanine transferase.
