Many researchers have evaluated different parts of UML and have come up with suggestions for improvements to different parts of the language. This chapter looks at UML (version 1.3) as a whole, and contains an overview evaluation of UML and how it is supported in the modeling tool Rational Rose as a basis for creating models of high quality. The evaluation is done using a general framework for understanding quality of models and modeling languages in the information systems field. The evaluation is based on both practical experiences and evaluations of UML and Rational Rose made by others. Based on the evaluation, we conclude that, although being an improvement over its predecessors, UML still has many limitations and deficiencies. Also Rational Rose only partly supports the development of information system models of high quality, and provides too limited support for using different modeling techniques in concert within a larger methodological framework.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the current status of handling and learning from sentinel events (SEs) in Dutch academic hospitals and to develop a basis for the first steps in a joint and transparent approach to improve learning from SEs.DesignSurvey by the Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres (NFU) as part of the project ‘Quality-based Governance’.Participants and settingAll eight Dutch University Medical Centres (UMCs).ResultsThree methods are used to identify the root cause of SEs: the Systematic Incident Reconstruction and Evaluation, Prevention and Recovery Information System for Monitoring and Analysis or TRIPOD method. Experts with different backgrounds are involved in the analysis of SEs. UMCs have different policies regarding the selection of recommendations for implementation. Some UMCs implement all recommendations formulated by the analysis team and in some UMCs the head of the involved department selects recommendations for implementation. No predetermined criteria have been established for this selection. Most UMCs confirm that similar SEs reoccur, which might be due to the quality of the analysis of the SEs or the quality of the recommendations.ConclusionThere is a large variety in handling SEs in Dutch academic hospitals and standards for the selection of recommendations are lacking. A next step to decrease the number of (similar) SEs lies in a joint and transparent approach to objectively assess recommendations and further define strategies for successful implementation. Selecting high-quality recommendations for implementation has the potential to lead to a decrease in the number of (similar) SEs and increase in the quality and safety of Dutch healthcare.

Information management, an important element of which is the information system, has a direct impact on the functioning of a company, including its competitive position. Information management is related to the shape of the organizational culture, represented, inter alia, by the context of trust, relationship, and communication. The shape of the organizational culture, including the functioning of the information system, is particularly influenced by factors (usually external) that appear in a sudden and unpredictable manner. This impact increases with the intensity and scale of their influence. The recent COVID-19 pandemic should undoubtedly be considered such a factor. As a result, many enterprises suddenly had to switch to remote work. The aim of this paper is to analyze the essence and recognize the impact of the forced transition to a remote form of work on trust as a shaping and effective factor in the functioning of the company’s information system. To achieve this goal, the results of qualitative research conducted by the authors during the period March 2020–February 2021 and quantitative research conducted in February 2021 were used. In connection with the conducted research, it was found that trust is a very important factor influencing the efficiency and quality of employees’ work. It was also found that the forced need to switch to remote work mode was a problem for most people. This was influenced by both the time of the pandemic, as well as technical and organizational problems. As a result of observations, own experiences, interviews, and a questionnaire survey, the authors state that the necessity to switch from traditional to remote work resulted in an increase in the costs of functioning of people, including employees.

Information management is of great importance to an organization. The quality and quantity of information influence the decision-making conditions, and with the increase in their value, the risk of failure and the uncertainty of undesirable effects are reduced. To a large extent, the accuracy of the decisions made depends on the quality of information held by the recipient. For the proper functioning of the organization, it is essential that the information acquired, processed, developed and circulated is of appropriate quality, i.e. it has a set of characteristics that determine the usefulness of information defined by the users. The article emphasizes that it is the effectiveness of the organization’s information system on which it depends to whom, in what form and on what level the information of the desired quality will be provided. Moreover, it was pointed out that it is necessary to systematically examine the information needs of the organization in order to meet the users’ expectations and the need for the organization to have the capacity to systematically reject useless information, information overload, and information selection.

The so-called e-commerce refers to the ESD (Electronic System of Distribution) which can be achieved in the areas of enterprises through the modern network and information technology, including the issuance and exchange basic information of the network, enterprises promotion, pre-market advertising, after-sales service and electronic distribution by electronic means, as well as, internal process and the electronic management information system applications of enterprises. In order to accommodate the complex network data of large scale companies, this thesis analyses PMI, strategy and role hierarchical model. On such a basis, the thesis proposes an applicable plan for access control of enterprises information system based on attribute certificate. These new entrants are often backed by advanced technology companies and competitive organizations with funds from Chinese and foreign conglomerates. Therefore, the applications of e-commerce in the field have brought about the information of business operations and internal management, which can provide consumers with a higher quality of services. In this paper, the enterprises information management and organization will be discussed in the e-commerce. Currently the technology of information and network develops rapidly. As a result, e-commerce, e-government and e-office prevail over our society and have become a part of our life. This situation enhances the efficiency of work and changes for the enterprises information management in China.

This article aims to design an Information System for Logistics and Distribution Management, albeit an incomplete one. It seeks to define the key performance indicators (financial, time, productivity and quality of services) as an innovative approach to information management, stemming from the understanding of the physical, financial and information flows related to the Logistics and Distribution activities in which the organizations operate, whether they are carried out in the for-profit or nonprofit sector. In this sense, some conceptual clarifications become necessary and are presented in this chapter. The term information unit / business unit, although widespread in management literature, is not defined by consensus. Guinchat and Menou (1994, p.337) use the term to refer to sectors of businesses whose mission is “to identify, as accurately as possible, information that may be useful to decision-makers (top, coordination and operational) in support decision-making.” Logistics and Distribution cannot manage without information on applications / products by and for customers, and their relationship with information management, in Information Science. The structure of the article summarizes existing academic work, seeking to generate new knowledge. It presents information to support decision-making in an integrated and independent way of support-technology.

Free-cutting steel gains specific working properties thanks to the high content of sulfur and phosphorus. These elements, especially sulfur, have a rather high tendency to segregation. Therefore, segregation defects in free-cutting steel continuously cast billets can be significantly developed. The aim of the work was to study the influence of the chemical composition of freecutting steel and casting technological parameters on the quality of the macrostructure of continuously cast billets. A metallographic assessment of the internal structure of cast metal made of free-cutting steel and data processing by application of correlation and regression analysis were the research methods. The array of production data of 43 heats of free-cutting steel of grade A12 was studied. Steel casting on a five-strand radial type continuous casting machine was carried out by various methods of metal pouring from tundish into the molds. Metal of 19 heats was poured with an open stream, and 24 heats – by a closed stream through submerged nozzles with a vertical hole. High-quality billets had a cross-sectional size of 150×150 mm. The macrostructure of high-quality square billets made of free-cutting steel of A12 grade is characterized by the presence of central porosity, axial segregation and peripheral point contamination, the degree of development of which was in the range from 1.5 to 2.0 points, segregation cracks and strips – about 1.0 points. In the course of casting with an open stream, almost all of these defects are more developed comparing with the casting by a closed stream. As a result of correlation and regression analysis, linear dependences of the development degree of segregation cracks and strips both axial and angular on the sulfur content in steel and on the ratio of manganese content to sulfur content were established. The degree of these defects development increases with growing of sulfur content in steel of A12 grade. These defects had especially strong development when sulfur content in steel was of more than 0.10%. To improve the quality of cast metal, it is necessary to have the ratio of the manganese content to the sulfur content in the metal more than eight.
