Kata Kunci: Perantau Muslim Bugis, Tradisi dan Modal Kultural, Riau dan Jambi   Abstract: This article describes the religious traditions of Bugis migrants in Indragiri Hilir, Jambi Province, and Tanjung Jabung Timur, Jambi Province. It also reveals the dominant values that become their driving force in social life. Based on the field research in both districts, this article concludes that Bugis migrants still maintain the Islamic traditions that they learned from their teachers in South Sulawesi, such as mangaji tudang, mappandre temme’, mabbarazanji, mammudu’, mammiraje’, mattampung, mappendrek tojang, mendre hajji, and cemme sapareng. These traditions are not only as a medium for the actualization and symbolization of religiosity, but also served as a motivation for success. These traditions are also in line with their original cultural philosophy, namely the Pangadereng and Siri world views as cultural and social capital in the process of accomodation, acculturation, assimilation, and integration to local communities. PurposeSocial capital, understood as intangible community values available through a network of connections, is a factor in the development of societies and improving quality of life. It helps to remove economic inequalities and prevent poverty and social exclusion, stimulate social and regional development, civic attitudes and social engagement and build a civic society as well as local and regional identity. Many of these tasks may be implemented by libraries, which, apart from providing access to information, may also offer a number of services associated with social needs. The purpose of this paper is to present the roles and functions that libraries may serve in local communities in terms of assistance, integration and development based on classical social capital theories.Design/methodology/approachThe paper reviews the classical concepts of social capital in the context of libraries. It analyses the findings of Pierre-Félix Bourdieu, James Coleman, Francis Fukuyama, Robert Putnam, Nan Lin, Ronald Stuart Burt, Wayne Baker and Alejandro Portes. Based on their respective concepts, the paper analyses the role of the contemporary library in the social life of local communities. In particular, it focuses on the possible new functions that public libraries may serve.FindingsA critical review of the concept of social capital revealed certain dependencies between libraries and their neighbourhoods. With new services that respond to the actual social needs, libraries may serve as a keystone, namely they may integrate, animate and engage local communities. This, however, requires a certain approach to be adopted by the personnel and governing authorities as well as infrastructure and tangible resources.Originality/valueThe social engagement of libraries is usually described from the practical perspective (reports on the services provided) or in the context of research on the impact of respective projects on specific groups of users (research reports). A broader approach, based on original social theories, is rarely encountered. The paper draws on classical concepts of social capital and is a contribution to the discussion on possible uses of those concepts based on an analysis of the role of libraries in social life and in strengthening the social capital of local communities.

Abstract The study is based on the APVV project that focused on the socio-cultural capital of successful Slovak municipalities, bearers of the “Village of the Year” title, which can serve as a source of inspiration for other municipalities in improving the quality of life in the countryside. The aim of this study is to highlight the possibilities for the development of local communities in the context of geographical and economic determining factors and to observe the use of the socio-cultural capital as a source of sustainable growth also in the context of cultural and local identity. The study analyses two concrete examples aimed to increase the attractiveness of the sites through the presentation of their socio-cultural potential. The first case covers the municipality of Hrušov and its participation in the Hont Eco-Museum project, implemented within the wider micro-region. In the second case, we explore the municipality of Spišský Hrhov and its analogical example – the museum of music MuzikMuzeum. The study was based mainly on the results of the pilot research and subsequent ethno logical field research in both municipalities, conducted predominantly by means of direct interviews with the locals, newcomers as well as leaders of the municipalities in 2018. The synthesis of the conclusions is based on a comparison of some determining factors of the development of both sites (the proximity and accessibility of urban centres, economic or confessional aspects in relation to the local community).

In remote rural areas, economic and social life exits, although young universitarian don't believe it. Dynamic companies, innovative administrations and creative third sector need talent, the most decisive input, but it is scarce and it is difficult to compete with cities to attract it. Public Universities linked to local communities could match each part, students and employees, facilitating their respective knowledge through summer internships, improving the human and social capital on both sides. That’s the objective of Desafío Programme, the experimental policy which we analyse in this work. It is implemented by the Provincial Council of Zaragoza and its University to do it reducing transaction cost by giving information and offering grants to the students who decide to work and live in very small villages. Thanks to it they obtain a professional experience in which to apply their knowledges, but, more important, they enrich themselves through an exceptional experience, learning by doing and learning by living. We expose the main points of Desafío, the kind of studies required, the type of company and organization, and the relevant costs. In base to the polls and interviews made before and after, we can deduce a very good valuation of students and employers.

This research examines the religious behavior of the people of Sukaresmi Village, Rongga District, West Bandung Regency after the construction of PLTA Cisokan, West Java. The construction of the Cisokan hydropower plant actually has a negative impact in the form of the destruction of the moral values of the Islamic religion due to the introduction of a new culture into social life. In overcoming this, religion is the key to strengthening awareness of improving the character and morals of rural communities. This awareness was influenced by political and economic dynamics which later manifested itself in an effort to revive religious traditions such as Syahriahan and Manakiban. The success in overcoming the moral decay of society is also influenced by the role of young ulama with broad scientific insight and effective communication. Through field research, interviews and document studies, this research concludes that the homogeneous characteristics of rural communities, including adherence to religion, are factors that facilitate the process of solving problems, including issues of morality and religion.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, and in Africa, given the lack of resources, they are likely to be even more acute. The usefulness of Traditional African Healers in helping to mitigate the effects of pandemic has been neglected. We argue from an ethical perspective that these healers can and should have an important role in informing and guiding local communities in Africa on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Particularly, we argue not only that much of the philosophy underlying Traditional African Medicine is adequate and compatible with preventive measures for COVID-19, but also that Traditional African Healers have some unique cultural capital for influencing and enforcing such preventive measures. The paper therefore suggests that not only given the cultural context of Africa where Traditional African Healers have a special role, but also because of the normative strength of the Afro-communitarian philosophy that informs it, there are good ethical reasons to endorse policies that involve Traditional Healers in the fight against COVID-19. We also maintain that concerns about Traditional African Healers objectionably violating patient confidentiality or being paternalistic are much weaker in the face of COVID-19.
